With TheTracker

A do-everything vehicle that makes iton the water, the sand dunes and even over deep snow

O F ALL the multi-purpose, allterrain vehicles on the market,

Alsport's Dual Tracker has got to bethe most versatile. Because of itsunique, extremely flexible drivetraincomponents, the Du~1 Tracker can beused on snow, on the dunes, in waterand through heavy brush or swamps. With its easily-installed front skis, the Dual Tracker is capable of skimming across deep snow at 35 mph. With its low-pressure, high-flotationlires, the vehicle is just right for kicking up a roostertail in the dunes.

Unlike many of the basic u'tilitarian all-terrain vehicles on the market, the Dual Tracker is a highly-sophisticated and engineered do-everythingmachine. Underneath the spansstyled, impact-resistant two-piecemolded fiberglass body is a way-outaluminum suspension protected by arigid steel perimeter frame. Becauseof its low center of gravity, it's almostimpossible to turn one over accidentally. The constant control throttleand gear selector lets you choose thespeed or direction with complete casc. Its dual tracks provide exceptionalmobility in any terrain and undermost conditions. .

Stylewise, the Dual Tracker comesoff more like a total vehicle than justa skimpy fiberglass-bodied chassis. The fastback styling, dual cockpitsealing and console controls give the

Dual Tracker that sports car flair. The dual head and tail lamps extendthe vehicle's versatility and make itpossible to make longer trips awayfrom your campsite. Many of thegoodies are actually standard equipment on this machine. The dune tiresor interchangeable skis, contouredwindshield, twin head and tail lights, passenger assist handle, cigarettelighter and heater are standard.Further comfort and safety featuresinclude twin disc brakes, forwardand reverse gears, electric starter,

custom car sleering wheel and vinylpadded bucket seats. The skis can bebolted on in a matter of minutes forconverting from sand or water operation to snow cruising.

What we liked about the model wechecked out was its ability to handlemost any situation. The rear cargorack provides ample space for camping or sports gear and there's an optional Sceni-dome clear plexi roof forbad weather operation. There's evenan emergency rope starter in case ofelectrical or starter problems whenyou're out in the boonies.

In addition to styling and engineering, lhe Dual Tracker excels in performance. Supplying the power is a395cc Rockwell JLO two-cycle engine which pumps out 24 hp. On flatland you can get the 550-pound vehicle up to 40 mph and on water youcan make approximately 5-6 mph.The Rockwell engine powers the DualTracker through a H D steel torqueconverter transmission and differentiel! to a set of wide tracks. Individualdisc brakes for each track providetight turn control on all surfaces. Onland the Dual Tracker can handle a750-pound load capacity, while onlhe waler it's reduced to 600 pounds. It will ford streams' or ponds, gothrough mud, heavy bru~ or glideover deep snow with ease. More thanthat you really can't ask for.

M ORE THAN ever before, people are on the move. Recrea

tion is the key word and when weekends and vacation times roll around, people make tracks for fun country.Between OUf ever increasing economic affluence and the increase of freeor vacation time, more and morc peo~

pie each year are looking tq get away. And, if the four-day work week evercomes about, the situation will growto unreal proportions.

The all-terrain vehicle, a new concept in functional as well as fun mobility, is coming into its own. Thesevehicles are capable of fording astream, climbing a snow hill, makingit through the brush country, servingas a mobile duck blind or rompingthrough the swamps. They're doeverything, go-everywhere vehiclesthat are pure fun as well as functional. They're sare, inexpensive and canturn anyone into a hero driver afterjust a few minutes behind the controls!

One of the manufacturers offeringa complete line of low to mediumpower all-terrain vehicles is ActionAge. Their Scramblers are popularlypriced and are powered by four-cycleBriggs & Stratton or Tecumseh engines. Horsepower ratings run from 7to 12 and steering systems range fromstick to conventional wheels. The topline Marc XII is the l2-hp modelwhich features racing stripes, sportswheel, padded bucket seats, discbrakes, electric starter and other littlegoodies.

Like most vehicles in its class, theAction-Age Scramblers are six-wheel,six-wheel-drive machines with reinforced fiberglass bodies. All sixwheels are powered by a chain andsprocket drivetrain through a variable speed automatic torque converter. Special overload clutches at eachwheel eliminate sheer pins and guardagainst drive component damage. The beauty part of driving an all-terrain vehicle is that it pivots ratherthan turns and it does it in its ownlength. This super maneuverability isaccomplished by a steering wheelthat actuates hydraulically-controlleddisc clutches. Moving the wheel to theright disengages, then brakes all threeright wheels while the left wheels sup66 DB/Fe

its super low center of gravity andwide track, the Scramblers are extremely safe vehicles.

The maintenance ractor here is extremely good. The reinforced fiberglass body with a polyethylene abrasion shield and the built-in colorsrequires little or no attention. Thesimplicity of the open-faced dry transmission provides a built-in overloadprotection system, assuring safetyand ease of operation. Anyone forScrambling?

PERFORMANCE PROVEN ATVFrom Baja to Great Gorge, New Jersey, the Attex ATV has proven itselfthe do-everything, go-everywhere fun /sports vehicle

THE VERSATILE, astonishinglymaneuverable and rugged all

terrain vehicle, built to go deep intothe remotest wilderness, has emergedinto rightful prominence on theAmerican recreational scene. It hashappened quite suddenly, during thelast year of the 1960's, while ourspace-age oriented technology is gearing itself for the challenge of the 'seventies.

The all-terrain vehicle was inventedin Canada in 196 I. For six years thisimaginative new dimension in offroad travel and recreation remainedin obscurity. But almost simultaneously, six companies created a newindustry in \967, when their machinesrolled off the assembly line into consumer consciousness. These were thefirst generation of the all-terrain vehicles. Like most pioneering prototypes, they were exciting and different, but had relied upon the technologies of related vehicular predecessors. The early ATV's were partavante garde innovation and partborrowings from snowmobiles, tractors, motorcycles and even lawnmowers.

The first of the second generationall-terrain vehicles, which made itsdebut just as unexpectedly, was tlieATTEX, manufactured by the ATVManufacturing Company, of Pittsburg, Pa. It was the brainchild of twounusual young men, both in theirlate twenties. They deeided to makethe first eompletely integrated designand with performanee engineering. They were David MeCahill and RogerFlannery, rugged individualists who

eombined their pursuit of outdoorsports with the praetiealities of founding a new business. Both saw the needfor a more sophisticated off-road vehicle, specifically designed for allseason, all-weather, all-terrain usea superior new off-road machine. They gave their newall-terrain vehiclethe improbable name ATTEX, combining the initials for all-terrain,"A_T," with the suffix HEX," meaning experimental.

The new vehicle made its spectacular debut before the nation's press ina rugged section of New York City'sCentral Park in October, 1968. Inone short year it was to capture onethird of the expanding new marketfor ATV's and establish itself as theindustry leader.

The first of the Attex second generation vehicles to be marketed in1969 was the ST /297 model, whichwas powered by a Rockwell JLO 18.5horse-power two-cycle engine. Thismodel was taken out of productionafter only six months to make wayfor a more powerful vehicle, theST/300, which was standardequipped with a Rockwell JLO 20horsepower powerplant. With theadded horsepower, the ST/300reaches speeds of 40 mph, which hasenabled this vehicle to dominate thenew sport of all-terrain vehicle racing.

The superiority of the second generation of ATV's is due to mechanical improvements. The advance inthe design of the transmission wasof fundamental importance. Underdevelopment by ATV for more than a

year, the revolutionary new unit utilizes three sets of planetary gears. One set is used for forward and reverse, and is controlled by a directional lever. The other two planetarygear ~ystems are used for steering, with gear-driven clutches actuated bydisc brakes.

Because the gears are constantlymeshed, there is almost nQ wear onthe transmission due to gear shifting. This design eliminates clutch slippage, resulting in instant full powerat the touch of the throttle. The transmission is made of aircraft aluminumand aircraft. quality steel alloy.

Developed especiallyfor this vehicle, the low pressure flotation tires have additional tractionproviding treads on their side. walls,an exclusive Altex feature for deepsnow and sand. The deep reversetread design provides increased maneuverability on water.

The vehicle features axles with exclusive design and mounting techniques that represent a significanttechnical advance in the industry.Made of strong aircraft alloy, theaxles utilize automotive ball bearingsmounted outside the body fo<increased support. This cuts down axlewear. resulting in smoother running, longer lasting axles.

The Attex is equipped with twopowerful headlights, each with 75,000candle power, providing twice theamount of light of standard automobile headlights. The Attex lights aremounted in the top section of the

The A ttex body is made of Royalite 20, an ABS thermoplastic whichis superior to any other body materialyet devised for an all-terrain vehicle.Manufactured by Uniroyal, Royalite20 provides strength, durability, dimensional stability, lightness andbeauty.

The Attex bodies are custom vacuum formed in the ATV Manufacturing Company's Comet formingmachine, one of the largest in the industry. Strict quality control is exercised by a team of experienced executives. Less than 7 feet long andabout 4'12 feet wide, Attex is easilytransportable by trailer or pick-upand will carry a full 800-pound payload up a 45-degree incline.

Optional equipment includes a sixwheel extension kit which enablesowners to install three additionalwheels on each side of the vehicle, making 12 in all, for greater traclionand maneuverability, particularly onthe water or in the snow. Windscreensand convertible fabric tops are available for all-season additional comfort. Other equipment includes atransport trailer with till-bed, rally-

ered by an 8-horsepower, four cycle,320 cc Briggs & Slraton engine. The8-horsepower vehicle wi II tra vel 25mph on land and 4 mph on water. Itsrange on land is four hours. It has arecoil starter. Price (FOB) is 5995.

The ST/300 is powered by a 20horsepower, two-cycle 300 cc Rockwell JLO engine. It will travel at 3"5mph on land and 4mph on water. Itsrange on land is five hours. It has a12-volt electric starter. Price (FOB)is 51595.

A third generation of Attex all-terrain vehicles is already in prototypeand has been tested at ATV rallysand races held in lhe Northeast,South and Midwest in the laSI sixmonths of 1969. It is the new superAttex powered by a 440 cc RockwellJLO engine which enables the vehicleto make 50 mph speeds. This vehiclehas yet to be defeated in the competitions for unlimited, modified vehicles. Final testing of the super Attexis scheduled for the Las Vegas Mintoff-road race in March of this year.An Attex racing team will compete inthe rugged 400-mile even I, one of lheworld's sternest driving tests. Thethird generalion Attex will be available to sportsmen after lhe companyhas evalualed lhe performance data.
