How to give a good presentation or talk
In a nutshell…
• It is important to understand WHO your audience is, WHAT the core message is that you are trying to convey in an area which you are PASSIONATE about and to PRACTICE enough times to feel comfortable with the delivery.
• i.e. AUDIENCE, MESSAGE, PASSION, PRACTICE
Audience
• Be audience centric
• Develop your material from an empathetic perspective in order to better engage them
• You need them more than they need you, treat them with consideration and humility
Audience Task
• Who are they?
• What are they expecting?
• What do they want?
• What do you want them to go away thinking?
Message
• Clear, concise, explainable in a sentence or two
• Beginning, middle and end
• Must emphasise why it is important to the audience (not just how you did x, y or z)
Message - Planning
• Use Post-it notes, cards with key ideas first, in order to move ideas around for sequence etc
• Write broader notes as you go
• When (provisionally) happy with sequence and content, make slides or notecards
Message
• Use memorable photos where possible
• Keep text to a minimum
Message Task
• What is your core message?
• Can you sum it up in a sentence?
• Are you passionate about it? Why/why not?
Practice
• Practice makes perfect
• Enough practice allows you to stop sounding mechanical and start sounding natural
• Avoid stress and anxiety by counting your breath, breathing deeply and adopting open body language (i.e. face the audience, smile and be yourself and don’t fold your arms)
