Foreword

WhenIwasaboy,backinwestTexas,myfatherwouldtellmestoriesaboutdragonsandwarriors.SincethenIhavealwayslovedfantasyartandstories.MyfavoritestorywastheoneaboutVigoandtheDragon.

Fromthedepthsoftheabyssaroseagreatdragonandhisbreathrainedfireandtheblueskiesofthedesolatelandswereturnedintohuesofcrimsonred.Dayandnightthedragonflewabovethelittlevillagewaitingandwatchingforitschancetofeedonthevillagersthathesawbelow.Hespewedballsoffireabovetheirheadsandtheflamesburnedthesoulsofthosewhocoweredandhidebehindthevillagewalls.Thedragonwasunrelentingashehuntedtheirfleshanddranktheirblood.Thedragonbecameintoxicatedwiththescentoftheirfearsashespreadhiswingsandsoaredinecstasy.

Rumorswerespreadbythevoicesinthefogofagreatwarriorwhowouldfightanddefeattheterribledragon.AbraveandfearlesswarriornamedVigowiththestrengthandcouragetofacethebeastsoonappeared.Andheventuredtotheunderworldofthegreatabysswherethedragonandmanyevilandterriblecreatureslurked.

Oncethere,Vigoenteredthemouthoftheabyssandhecouldseeahugepitabout100metersacross.Therewereflamesshootingstraightupintothethickandpolluted

atmosphereinside.Sharpejaggedledgesleadallthewaydownintothehugepit,theyalmostlookedlikegiantsteps.Therewassearingheatbeinggeneratedfromthefierydepthbelow.Vigoheardlamentingscreamscomingfrombelowandheonlycouldimaginewhatkindoftorturemustbegoingon.

Heputhisswordbehindhimandbegantoclimbdown.Atfirsthehadtojumpdownontoeachledgebecauseofhowsteeptheledgeswere.Theledgeswereextremelyjaggedandtheybecameveryslipperybecausetherewassomekindofdarkredliquidflowingdowntheledges.Vigohadtobeextremelycarefulnottosliporhewouldfall.Theflameswerealsogettingstrongerandgrewmoreviolentandtreacherousashedescendeddeeperintotheabyss.Vigofinallyreachedthebottomledgebuthewasextremelyexhaustedandfelttheneedtorestforabit.

Helookedoutoverthelastledgeandhesawanopeningintoalargecavernandhedecidedtoclimbintoit.Itseemedasifhehadbeenwalkingforhoursasheexploredtheinteriorofthecave.Itwasdarkandcoldanddampunliketherestoftheabyss.Vigo

couldseethesehugeformationswithglowing

emberscomingdownfromtheceiling.Theylookedlikegiantstalagmitesglowingandpulsatingwithsomesortofenergy.Everyfewminutes,colorfulsparkswouldshootoutandthewholecavernwouldbevisible.Vigocouldseethewallsallcoveredinrootsandstrangelookingvinesandthefloorwascoveredinagreenmist.

Hesawmillionsoftinyblackwigglycreaturescomingoutofthemistandtheywere

crawlingasfastastheycouldupanddownthewalls.Thecreatureshadtinyredblinkingeyesandwhentheyopenedtheirmouthsyoucouldseesmallfangsdrippingwithsaliva.Theywereusingtheirfangstosuckupthestrangeredfluidthatcoveredeverythingintheplace.

Suddenly,oneofthelittlecreaturesspottedVigoanditinstantlybeganblinkingandflashingitshideouseyeslikeitwassomekindofwarningalarm.Thelittlethinglookedlikeitwasgoingmadasitbegantowigglelikecrazythenitopeneditstinymouthandoutpoppeditsfangsasitstartedtochasehim.Vigodecidedtogetoutofthereasfastashecouldbeforetherestofthecreaturescameafterhim.

Inthenextcavernhecouldseeahugepoolofredliquidwithflamescomingoutofitscenter.Suddenlyheheardaloudandthunderousroarandhelookedup.Ahugedragoncoveredinscalesthatlookedlikesharprazorbladesstickingoutofitsspineglaredathim.Itwastheonewhowasspewingtheflamesfromthepit.Thedragonwaswrappedaroundahugeobjectthatwasshapedlikearectangle…………

TheprecedingwasashortpreviewofthebookVigoAndTheDragon.

Ashestoodamongthedeathandtheslaughterthedragonhadleftinitspath.Hefeltthewindandthedustasitblewoverthebonesandscatteredtheashesofthosewhohadfallen.Hemadethevowtoreturnifeverhewasneeded.Heturnedtowardsthewindandslowlyfadedintothesandstorm.

INTRODUCTION

Sincethebeginningofmankindpeoplehavetoldmythsandtalesofthegreatbattlesandofthewarriorswhofoughtinthem.TalesandlegendswheretoldoftheterriblebattlesfromBabylontoArmageddon.Battlesinwhichthousandofwarriorsdiedandonlythestrongestofwhichsurvivedtodobattleagain.

Mythsandlegendswerespreadoftheterriblemonstersanddragonsthatbravewarriorswouldfightandslay.Suchasfirebreathingdragonsandsnakeswithlargefangs.

Throughouttheagestherehasalwaysbeenagreatfascinationwithwarriors.Andartistswerealsointriguedwiththedepictionofthesewarriorsintheirartwork.Forexample,therewasMichelangelowhosculptedapowerfulDavidagainstGoliathandFrankFrazettawhopaintedmanyfantasywarriors.

Artistshavebeeninspiredtopaintanddrawthesecharacterslargerthanlife.Theseheroesandwarriorsareoftendrawnandpantedwiththeirbodiesandmusclesexaggeratedsoastolookmorefantasticanddynamicthannormal.Thusinspiringthebeginningsofthefantasyartgenreoftoday.

Inthefantasyartworldoftodayartistillustratescenesofwarriorsfighting,monstersandhugeserpents.Theyfightcreatureswithstrengthandpowerthatwouldinstantlykillor

severelyhurtanynormalhumanbeing.Theyillustrateepicbattlescenesofthepastandofthefuture.Andso,itisuptoyoutobringyourimaginationtolifeanddrawyourwarriorcharacterswithartisticoriginalityandyourownstyle.Lettheinfinitereachesofyourcreativemindbeyourguide.Donotbeafraidtoenterthedarkestrealmsofyourimaginationtofindtheseedsofyourinspiration.

SometimesIliketositbackandrelaxandjustletmyimaginationrunwildandcomeupwithlotsofideas.IvisualizejusthowIwanteachcharactertolooklike.Iimagineeachcharacterhasabackstoryandevenwhattypeofpersonalitytheymighthave.Ievenimaginethemtalkingtomeandtoeachother.Butmostly,IjustliketohavefunwhenIamdrawingacharacter.So,Ihighlyrecommendthatyouhavefunwithyourdrawingsandthisinturnwillshowinthespiritofyourartwork.

Chapter1ToolsandTechniquesoftheTrade

Themediumandthetoolsthatyouchoseareentirelyuptoyou.Irecommendthatyouvisityourlocalartssupplystoreandjustlookthroughallthedifferentmediumsandtoolsthatareavailabletoyou.Thentryoutasmanyofthemasyoucan.Ibelievethateveryartisthastheirownspecialmediumandtoolsthatarejustrightforthem.Thatiswhyitisveryimportantnottolimitorgettrappedintojustusingonetypeofmediumortools.Hereisalistofjustafewofthemediumsandtoolsyouwillfind.Bytryingoutandworkingwithdifferentartsuppliesyouwillfindwhatworksbestforyou.

SHADINGPROCESS

Thefinalstageindrawingisshadingeverythingin.Atthisstagemakesureyourdrawingisjustthewaythatyouwantittobe.Ifyoucanmakeanycorrectionsoradjustments,dothemnow.Thendeterminethedirectionofthelightsource,andstarttheshadingprocess.

•Starttheshadingwithageneralshadingoftheentiredrawing.Lightlyshadealltheareasthatyouwillbeworkingon.•Secondly,concentrateonthedarkerareasofthedrawing.Thesearethepartsofthedrawingthatyouwanttohavesomedepth.•Now,youcanworkonthespecificareasofthedrawing.Concentrateyourshadingontheindividualfacefeatures.

•Lastly,goinandrefineyourshading.Workonthepartsthatneedtobedefined,andtheareasyouwanttostandout.Also,workontheareasthatyouwantthedarkest.

Takeasmuchtimeasyouwantwhenyouareintheshadingstageofyourdrawing.Becarefulnottoovershadeeverything.Aftereachstageoftheshadingsitback,andexamineyourprogress.Beforecontinuingassesswhatareasrequiremorework,andwhatareasdonot.Thisisthefinalstageofyourdrawing,giveitallthatyouhave.Also,itisimportanttonotethatthisprocessdoesnothavetobefollowedintheorderthatitislisted.Forexample,thedetailshadingcanbedonefirst.
