There is a small car park at Caernarfon station and several public car parks nearby. Car parking charges have been reduced in Porthmadog. Please use the main town car park which is 200 yards from Harbour Station. Follow the signs from the main road. This now costs £3.50 for a full day. There are a small number of disabled spaces and a handy ‘drop off’ point at the station. BY TRAIN: Via the North Wales Coast - The nearest mainline station is Bangor which is served by trains from Crewe, Manchester and London. Both Arriva Trains Wales and Virgin Trains serve Bangor. There is a regular bus service between Bangor station and Caernarfon - with a journey time of around 30 minutes. Via Mid Wales - Use Arriva Trains Wales services, via Shrewsbury and Machynlleth, for the Cambrian Coast line. Alighting at Porthmadog, Harbour Station is around a 15 minute walk from the mainline station. Further details of Arriva Trains Wales services are available from www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk. BY BUS: Caernarfon is well served by bus and coach services. From the main bus stops, walk towards the Castle Square. Cross the square, heading towards the castle. Turn left down the hill in front of the castle, then left again. The station is approximately 200 yards along this road. Porthmadog also benefits from good bus and coach services, which stop in the main street near the station. Beddgelert, Rhyd Ddu and Waunfawr stations are all on the S4 ‘Snowdon Sherpa’ bus route which operates to and from Caernarfon. This gives you a 10% discount on the ordinary fare and a full day out with plenty to see and do in each town. Caernarfon is a town of contrasts, market town, tourist centre and county town of Gwynedd. The station lies in the shadow of the castle, famous in recent times as place of the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969. The castle sits on the Menai Straits with the harbour to one side and the docks to the other. The Victoria Docks have been redeveloped with shops, restaurants and a theatre whilst the old town is a delightful maze of streets with small shops and cafés. Waunfawr Station offers a short trip from Caernarfon with an hour break or an excuse to stop short if travelling from Porthmadog to give a longer break. The Snowdonia Parc Brew Pub at the station offers a friendly welcome with a family room and children’s playground, food served from 1100 and real ale brewed on the premises by the landlady. Rhyd Ddu Station is at the start of one of the popular paths up Snowdon, as is Snowdon Ranger Halt if you want to take a different route down. Trains cross here on most days offering half day journeys from both ends of the line with an immediate transfer. If you want to take a break though, there is a pub or tea rooms in the village. Beddgelert Station is just a short walk from the village centre, which – with its cafés, pubs, shops and riverside walks – provides the perfect reason to stay and explore awhile. Don’t forget to visit the grave of Gelert, the faithful hound of Victorian legend, which lies in the meadows near the river. Beddgelert is a 60 minute journey from Porthmadog with a minimum one hour stop, or a 90 minute journey from Caernarfon with a two hour stop in the village. Pont Croesor Station is just a short ride from Porthmadog and is situated adjacent to the RSPB Glaslyn Osprey Visitor Centre and a mile from the pretty village of Llanfrothen which boasts a good pub and café. Porthmadog was once a great seaport, rich in maritime history. It is still thriving today but now as both a busy tourist centre and hub for the local community. The harbour is filled with pleasure craft rather than schooners but is still a popular place to walk round, go crabbing or simply sit beside and watch the world go by. The high street with its wide pavements has a wide choice of shops, cafés and pubs. Porthmadog a Chaernarfon. On our morning and lunchtime trains, see timetable for trains with this symbol , our kitchen offers a selection of toasted sandwiches, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, burgers and the great bacon bap. Our stewards will take your order while you sit back and relax as chef freshly prepares your food which your steward will bring to your seat when ready. Our stewards will also bring the buffet trolley to you so that you can select from a range of hot and cold drinks, locally brewed beers and cider,wines, cakes and snacks.

We have souvenir shops at Porthmadog and Caernarfon with a wide range of railway items and gifts to suit all ages and interests. Many of these are exclusive to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways. Our shops are open on every day that the trains are running.

Welcome to the Welsh Highland Railway. This newlycompleted line has restored a long lost rail link

between the towns of Caernarfon and Porthmadog, running coast to coast through the heart of the magnificent Snowdonia National Park.In 2012, for the first time, all main services will run the full 25 miles from beside the famous castle at Caernarfon to Harbour Station in Porthmadog. Harbour Station is home to both the Ffestiniog and the Welsh Highland Railway which opens up a host of new travel opportunities. By using the local bus and rail services too, there is even greater choice with circular trips and shorter journeys available.
