How to Get the Flower Girl Ready for Your Wedding
What does a flower girl do exactly? The flower girl is one of the first people to walk down the
aisle at a wedding. She is often accompanied by a ring bearer. Typically, a flower girl is age
three to eight and carries a basket filled with petals. However, there are many other ways to go
about it.
The flower girl often wears a dress to match the rest of the bridal party. She walks down the aisle
and may sprinkle petals on the way. Then, depending on how old and well behaved she is, she
will either sit down or stand with the rest of the bridesmaids.
Selecting a dress – Flower girl dresses are traditionally white with a detachable sash.
Many brides opt for a color such as pink, purple, yellow, blue, brown, red, or black.
Usually, it’s a poufy, A-line cut dress that falls below the knee. However, all styles are
available.
Picking out flowers – The flower girl may sprinkle petals, confetti, or candy from her
basket as she walks down the aisle. Alternatively she could blow bubbles. Some flower
girls carry their own little bouquet, pomander, or even a single bloom.
Walking the aisle – If the flower girl is nervous about walking by herself during the
ceremony, you may want her to walk with the ring bearer. This gives both of the children
more confidence as they walk down the aisle together in front of so many people.
Seating flower girls – In some ceremonies, the flower girl stands with the rest of the
bridesmaids as the vows are read. If she is very young or fidgety, it may be better to have
her sit down with her parents. Make sure she gets a front row seat so that she can see the
rest of the wedding.
Rehearsal walking – It’s a good idea to include the flower girl in the rehearsals so she
won’t feel intimidated at the main event. You may also want to include her in the bridal
shower and dinner. Additionally, her duties should be fully explained well in advance of
the ceremony so she isn’t confused.
Girls will be girls – If you do decide to have a flower girl, be prepared for the
unexpected. Children are one of the most unpredictable elements at a wedding. Young
flower girls have been known to cry, drop their basket of flowers, or even accidentally
trip over their toddler flower girl dresses.¹
