No, I am not suggesting that you walk your Siamese cat on the treadmill even though there aredozens of websites that are dedicated to just that. A Treadmill is a serious piece of machinery, andyou should not allow pets or children near it without your supervision. But that doesn’t mean youcan’t have a little fun with it. Here is how:

Games and Fun

If your boys are lazy it is time you took some steps to make them active by awakening thecompetitive spirit in them. The easiest way would be to set targets and see who reaches itfirst. A treadmill has an inbuilt pedometer which counts the number of steps taken. You canask your boys to take turns on the machine and record the time taken to reach 10,000 steps(recommended). The winner takes the bragging rights and right to first use of the treadmill.

Hill Training

Professional athletes use hill training for endurance and strength training. Now you can do thesame at home without having to travel hundreds of kilometres in search of adequate training

facilities. Hill training is good for cardiovascular training and developing muscles which areneeded for day to day activity. A normal hill training schedule starts at a low intensity. Theintensity of the training is increased gradually till it reaches a peak followed by a cooling downperiod. To reach the desired intensity levels, the treadmill automatically manipulates theincline and the speed. It is a great way to exercise as you can read the performance metricson the central LCD console.

Target Heart Rate

The heart beats per minute of an average man is around 60-80, in athletes it is as low as 40.As you grow old, the heart beat increases to more than 100. The secret of living a longhealthy life is keeping the heart rate in check so it remains within the recommended range fora long period of time. Calculating your heart rate is very easy. Sit on a comfortable chair andcalculate your pulse rate till the count of thirty, double it and the figure you get is your restingheart rate. Most fitness experts recommend exercising at 65-75% percent of your restingheart rate, to get the most of your work outs. The treadmill is handy when you want toexercise around the recommended range of activity. All you have to do is feed in the dataabout your heart rate and the machine takes care of the rest by manipulating the speed andthe incline for you.

Performance Metrics

If you are a walker, you should set a target of 10,000 steps for every day. 10,000 steps is thebenchmark when it comes to fitness walking. Most treadmills have sensors that calculate thenumber of steps you take and this data is fed into the central console. This data can then bemultiplied by the length of your stride, to give information on the distance covered andcalories burnt. It is a cool apparatus because you can see heart rate activity on the LCDscreen and use this information to modify your exercise regimen.
