Why Study Abroad?Studying abroad gives students an opportunity to explore fi rst-hand many of the concepts, places, and stories from their academics at Brandeis University. It can create a more fruitful overall learning experience and push students to think in new ways on a variety of topics. Students can also become more culturally competent, experience personal growth, and develop professional skills demanded in a global marketplace.

Program OptionsThere are over 300 approved programs in about 65 different countries. Every major and minor can study abroad. Students can study at an international institution, complete an internship for credit, conduct their own research project, and more.

Our MissionWe believe that an education experience abroad is intended to enhance a student’s overall educational endeavors at Brandeis and provide opportuni-ties for intellectual, professional, and personal growth. We also believe that all phases of an experience abroad provide students with unique opportuni-ties to become increasingly self-suffi cient and refl ective.

FinancesWe want all students to have the opportunity to study abroad regardless of fi nancial background. Logistically, when students study abroad they continue to pay Brandeis tuition and required fees and pay any non-tuition costs directly to their study abroad programs. Nearly all fi nancial aid is transferrable to study abroad and scholarships are available. Non-tuition costs will vary based on the standard of living, exchange rates, and personal spending.

Health and SafetyThe health and safety of our students is our top priority. All of our approved programs have been vetted for their established safety procedures and on-site support. We work directly with students through advising and Pre-Departure and Re-Orienation Workshops to help with their transition in and out of the university and discuss the student’s responsibility for their health, wellness, and safety.

DeadlinesFor students interested in studying abroad in the fall, spring or academic year, the application deadline is the February before they study abroad.

For students interested in studying abroad in the summer, the application deadline is the Marchbefore they study abroad.

Students will also apply to their program, which have various deadlines.

Family PortalTo assist families further, we have developed a Family Portal on our website:http://www.brandeis.edu/abroad/families/index.html

“Academically, I liked hearing about a history class where the teacher took them out to explore real-life examples of what they were discussing. I also liked the many stories about the relationship that developed between [my daughter] and her “mother” and “father.” I liked hearing about the food they served, about the conversations they had and about the Spanish soap operas that she watched with her “mom.”

- Parent of student on CIEE/ Liberal Arts in Seville, Spain

“My greatest challenge while abroad was communicating with home with the large time diff erence. I could only talk to people back in the states during the morning or at night, and it was diffi cult to arrange times to talk. My family and I were able to get into a pretty good schedule and over time it became much easier to navigate.”
