How to install Oracle 12.1 in silent mode

Credit: I have used some Tim Hall installation notes http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/12c/oracle-db-12cr1-installation-on-oracle-linux-6.php for this.

I have installed Oracle 12.1.0.1 on Oracle Linux 6.3 64 bits with the Oracle validated RPM for 11.2 (this will install all packages needed by Oracle, configure Linux kernel, create ‘oracle’ account and change other setttings required for Oracle Database software installation):

# yum install oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall -y

Start by disabling firewall and SELINUX and then reboot:

# service iptables stop # chkconfig iptables off # grep SELINUX /etc/selinux/config #SELINUX= can take one of these three values: SELINUX=disabled # SELINUXTYPE= can take one of these two values: SELINUXTYPE=targeted # reboot

Create the Oracle Home directory:

# mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0/db_1 # chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01 # chmod -R 775 /u01

Create additional group and assign it to ‘oracle’ account:

# groupadd -g 54323 oper # usermod -u 54231 -g oinstall -G dba,oper oracle

Switch to ‘oracle’ account and unzip Oracle media in /tmp:

$ unzip linuxamd64_12c_database_1of2.zip $ unzip linuxamd64_12c_database_2of2.zip

Install Oracle software with following script:

cd /tmp/database export DISTRIB=`pwd` ./runInstaller -silent \ -responseFile $DISTRIB/response/db_install.rsp \ oracle.install.option=INSTALL_DB_SWONLY \ UNIX_GROUP_NAME=oinstall \ INVENTORY_LOCATION=/u01/app/oraInventory \ SELECTED_LANGUAGES=en,fr \ ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0/db_1 \ ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle \ oracle.install.db.InstallEdition=EE \ oracle.install.db.isCustomInstall=false \ oracle.install.db.DBA_GROUP=dba \ oracle.install.db.OPER_GROUP=dba \ oracle.install.db.BACKUPDBA_GROUP=dba \ oracle.install.db.DGDBA_GROUP=dba \ oracle.install.db.KMDBA_GROUP=dba \ SECURITY_UPDATES_VIA_MYORACLESUPPORT=false \ DECLINE_SECURITY_UPDATES=true

This has started installation in the background: you need to wait until something similar to the following is displayed:

The installation of Oracle Database 12c was successful. Please check '/u01/app/oraInventory/logs/silentInstallXXX.log' for more details.

As a root user, execute the following script(s): 1. /u01/app/oraInventory/orainstRoot.sh 2. /u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0/db_1/root.sh

Successfully Setup Software.

As requested run following scripts with ‘root’ account:

# /u01/app/oraInventory/orainstRoot.sh # /u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0/db_1/root.sh

Modify oracle user .bash_profile to add:

# Oracle Settings export TMP=/tmp export TMPDIR=$TMP

export ORACLE_HOSTNAME=hostname.localdomain export ORACLE_UNQNAME=cdb12c export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/12.1.0/db_1 export ORACLE_SID=cdb12c

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib export CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib

Logout and login again as ‘oracle’ and test:

$ sqlplus -v

SQL*Plus: Release 12.1.0.1.0 Production
