excitement. Being able to layer up with a luscious new wrap or shawl that you’ve crafted on a rainy Saturday is a lovely thing, as is turning

the heating on and making your home a bit more cosy.

Leaving a tail of yarn long enough to cast on the number of stitches required, make a slip knot. Place the slip knot on the needle and hold the needle in the right hand.

HOW TO CAST ON THUMB METHOD

Wind the tail of yarn clockwise around the left thumb from front to back.

Insert the needle through the yarn around the thumb. Take the yarn under the point of the needle. Pull a loop through to form a stitch.

Remove your left thumb from the yarn and pull the tail to secure the stitch. Repeat from step 2 until the required number of stitches has been cast on.

Knit a little/knit a lot, be careful. It’s addictive! Most of the projects in this book are rated easy, but the easiest

project of all is a simple scarf. Cast on 30 stitches in your yarn of choice, knit until its long enough and cast off. Simple.

BASIC KNIT STITCH

Hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand, supporting it with your little finger and guiding it with the ring finger.

Pick up the right hand needle, as you knit, guiding it with your thumb, insert the needle tip into the stitch on the left hand needle while your index finger directs the movement of the yarn.

With your right index finger, wrap the yarn from back to front, then up and over the right hand needle, then back down behind the same needle.

Keeping the yarn you are working with behind the needle, insert the right hand needle (from front to back) in the loop of the first stitch on the left hand needle.

Turn your work, so that the back of the knitted stitches are towards you. Hold the needle with stitches in your left hand.

Insert the right hand needle into the left front loop of first stitch of left needle, from right to left. Yarn should be at front of work.

Wrap the yarn around the tip of the right hand needle, looping it over the tip and bringing it forward again under the tip.

Withdraw the right hand needle tip to pull the new stitch onto the right needle and slip the existing stitch off the left hand needle. Continue working in this way on stitches on the left needle. One row of knit stitch, then one row of purl stitch is called stocking stitch.

Withdraw the right hand needle a little and pull the new stitch forward, letting this new stitch slip onto the right hand needle and dropping the existing stitch off the left hand needle.

BASIC PURL STITCH

`

CASTING OFFCasting off is used to finish off your fabric, making sure that your work does not unravel. Always cast off in the appropriate stitch for your work, that being knitwise on a knit row and purlwise on a purl row. When casting off in rib, cast off in knit over the knit stitches & purl over the purl stitches. This will ensure that the elasticity of the rib is continued.

Knit the first stitch of the row, then knit the next stitch. You will have two stitches on the right needle.

Insert the tip of the left needle into the first stitch that was knitted on the right needle and pull the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle, then knit one more stitch & repeat the process to the end of the row. When you only have one stitch left, cut the thread & pass it through the last loop & pull.

DECREASETo decrease is to lose one stitch. Put your needle through two stitches. Knit. Slip the two stitches off the left needle. You have decreased a stitch.

INCREASETo increase is to make one stitch. Knit the stitch as usual, but don’t slip off the needle. Now knit into the back of the same stitch. This time slip the stitch off the needle. You have made two stitches out of one.

Continue working each stitch across, passing the new stitches to the right needle and sliding other stitches off the left needle. Rows knit stitch only is called garter stitch.

NEEDLES A set of 2.25mm or 2.75mm or 3.25mm double-pointed knitting needles (see Note 1 below).Wool needle for grafting and sewing in ends.


NOTE 1People’s foot widths vary enormously. To make this pattern as adaptable as possible, we have listed three possible needle sizes that can be used. If you have narrow feet, use 2.25mm needles. If you have average width feet, use 2.75mm needles. If you require a wider fit, then use 3.25mm needles. You can even alter the needle sizes throughout the pattern. If for example you have wider ankles but narrow feet, start with a larger size needle, then use a smaller needle for the feet.

NOTE 2Since foot lengths vary so much between people, the best way to get great fitting Socks is to try the Socks on as you knit. The foot length can easily be varied at the point highlighted in the pattern.

ANKLE SOCKSUsing needle size of choice, cast on 70 sts on 3 needles.1st round: Knit.2nd round: Purl.3rd round: Knit.

Beg Patt:1st round: K1, * yfwd, K2, K2tog, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, yfwd, K2, rep from * to last 9 sts, yfwd, K2, K2tog, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, yfwd, K1.2nd round: Knit.Rep 1st and 2nd rounds 3 times.

9th round: Purl.10th round: Knit.Rep last 10 rounds twice.Next round: * K5, K2tog, rep from * to end … 60 sts.Knit 15 rounds.

Divide For Heel:Knit first 15 sts of round on to one needle, slip last 15 sts of round on to other end of same needle. These 30 sts are for heel.Divide rem 30 sts on to 2 needles and leave for instep.Work 27 rows stocking st on heel sts, beg with a purl row, and always slipping first st purlways on a purl row and knitways on a knit row.

To Turn Heel:K17, K2tog, K1, turn; P6, P2tog, P1, turn; K7, K2tog, K1, turn; P8, P2tog, P1, turn.Cont in this manner until 18 sts rem on needle.Knit first 9 sts. Heel is now completed.Slip all instep sts on to one needle again.Using another needle, knit rem 9 sts of heel, then knit up 16 sts along side of heel; using 2nd needle, knit across all instep sts; using 3rd needle, knit up 16 sts along other side of heel, then knit rem 9 heel sts … 80 sts.

Our bowl has a diameter of 20cm, and is 9cm high. You may need to adjust the length of your netted section if your bowl is much larger, and reduce the number of strands if your bowl is much much smaller. If your bowl is deeper, tie more layers of netting in the second section. To secure the bowl.

If you want to hang a heavy object, you may need to use a yarn that has less give, or test the hanging to make sure it is safe.

YOU WILL NEED:1 ball of Lincraft Spaghetti yarn ScissorsA Bowl

Cut 8 lengths of Spaghetti yarn each 430cm long.Fold the 8 lengths in half and tie a knot 4cm from the folded end to form a loop.Divide the hanging ends into a centre (8 strands long) and two end sections each 4 strands long.

Use the diagram on the left of this page to see how to do a macrame knot. The knots will twist naturally as you go. Tie 30 knots into a knotted rope.

Start the netted section:3cm down from the knotted rope tie 2 strands together in a simple knot. Repeat with all strands at the same level.

Tie the next section 3cm down from the first row of simple knots but this time divide the previous strands and tie each to their neighbour in another level of simple knots.

Tie another section 3cm down from the second row of simple knots, again dividing the previous strands and tieing each to their neighbour in another level of simple knots.

Allow an open section of strands of approx. 20cm before starting the next netted section.Repeat the instructions from the previous netted section.

Leave 7cm before tying the second layer of knots. Leave 4cm before tying the third layer of knotsLeave 4cm before tying the fourth layer of knots.Tie all strands into a knot to secure the bottom of the bowl.

Check that the bowl fits into the hanging and if you are happy, trim the ends evenly.

TENSION 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.00mm needles. NOTE Yarn bombing trees, bike racks, handrails (or any object of your choice) can make a beautiful and colourful display. However, when yarn bombing, always be mindful of Council regulations and people’s private property. Yarn bombing should be a fun project that unites the community, not divides it.

YARN BOMBING When yarn bombing a tree, bike rack or handrail, you will knit a piece as you would for a scarf, which will then be attached to or sewn around the object. Using 4.00mm needles and colour of choice, you’ll begin by casting on enough sts to wrap around the object. So how many sts do you cast on? You could do it by guess work and keep casting on sts until it looks wide enough, but a better option is to calculate the width mathematically and here’s how to do that:We’re using 8ply yarn and our tension is 22 sts to 10cm, over stocking stitch, using 4.00mm needles. Assuming you do get that correct tension, every 1cm of your work will take up 2.2 sts. If your work needs to be 15cm wide to wrap around the object you multiply 15 x 2.2 = 33. You would need to cast on 33 sts. If your work needs to be 30cm wide you would multiply 30 x 2.2 = 66, so you would cast on 66 sts.This same calculation method applies if you’re using a thicker or finer yarn. If your yarn has a stitch tension of 15 sts to 10cm, you would multiply your desired width by 1.5. If your yarn has a stitch tension of 29 sts to 10cm, you would multiply your desired width by 2.9.So how long should your knitted piece be? Obviously it can be as long or as short as you want it to be. You can measure the object you plan to cover to choose the right length for it, or you can just keep knitting until it seems long enough or you run out of yarn. There are no hard and fast rules here.Adding stripes is a great way to add extra interest and colour to your knitting. Stripes can be as wide or narrow as you like, in a regular striped pattern or completely random. Go wild and use your imagination!Once your knitted piece is at your desired length, cast off and either sew in all the ends or leave them for tying the knitting to the object. Attach the knitting to the object either by tying those loose ends together or by sewing it in position.The same principal applies to crochet yarn bombing. Once you know the tension of the stitch you wish to use, calculate the width you need then work to the required length, altering the colours and stitches as you please.

Yarn Bomb Trees, Bike Racks

& Handrails

It’s easier than you think, but it does take a bit of work behind the scenes. You will need to measure the tree(s) you have in mind, prepare a piece of knitted or crocheted fabric that is roughly the right size, and sew it to the tree by hand. We have prepared a few basic patterns as a guide, but we suggest you bounce off from there to make your own creations that are uniquely striped, laced or patterned. Don’t have a tree? Make flowers and attach them to a wire fence or a length of i-cord wrapped around a pole or bike rack.

Yarn bombing can be a great way to decorate a school for a celebration, and my kids have delighted in yarn bombing a neighbour’s tree with a single finger-knitted length wrapped many times–waiting to see how long it would remain. It can be so much fun, but please make sure you have permission before you ‘attack’ – or you’ll risk your creation disappearing as quickly as it went up.
