Useful tips on how to limit your data usage via satellite connections.

On a connection where every MB of data counts it is a good idea of trying to limit your computers

use of background data. This includes various applications use of internet access, software updates

and “checks” for updates (ex. Weather updates and such).

Try to “get to know” your computer, and learn its behaviors. This way, you will notice that when you

start your computer, for example, the weather app automatically updates itself, and this kind of

service is something that you do not want while using satellite connections.

Following are a few tips on how to limit the background data in a computer. Since the guide is only

general, you might need to look up the exact way of doing this, based on what operation system (ex

win 7 or win 8) you are using.

1. Disable automatic updates, and check for updates.

Make sure your computer doesn’t download updates, or even check if there are an update

available, this will generate allot of data usage.

Example on a Swedish win7 computer with no automatic updates looks like:

2. Disable any firewall or antivirus programs automatic update service. Even though it means

putting your computer at risk, the constant updating means constant data usage. Instead, try

to update these kind of services while in a harbor or where you have high-speed internet

access.

3. Try to manage your programs on your computer, so that they don’t check for updates by

themselves, examples of programs that do this are: Java software, Adobe Acrobat,

Flashplayer, Firefox, Itunes, Skype, Spotify.

Please note that these are just examples of software, there are plenty of other software’s

doing this as well!

4. Make sure you are not running any Widgets/ Gadgets on your computer. This is a feature that

gives you small stickers and windows on your screen that will connect to the internet and

update its information for example stock information, weather, calendar and news

Example on Gadgets to the right of the screen on a Win 8 computer:

Example on widgets in Mac OS-X:

5. Some operatingsystems have these Widgets/Gadgets embedded in their menus, so please be

aware of any information that updates while you are opening the menu. This information can

include news, tweets, facebook updates, cloud services, weather and other misc content

Example on a Win 8 menu full with screens that updates themselves:

6. If you are using an Iphone/Ipad on your satellite connection, make sure that you set it to not

downloading updates or check for updates automatically

1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

2. Scroll down and tap on iTunes & App Store.

3. Under the Automatic Downloads section, turn the option for Updates to Off.

7. If you are using a Smartphone with Android on your satellite connection, make sure that you

set it to not downloading updates or check for updates. This is done differently depending on

your model, so check you manual for specific ways of doing this.

8. If you are using a Smartphone with Android on your satellite connection, make sure that you

set it to not downloading updates of apps. This guide might not work on all Android versions

1. Open Google Play.

2. Tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) on the top-left.

3. Tap Settings.

4. Tap Auto-update apps.

5. To disable automatic app updates, select Do not auto-update apps.

9. If you are using a Smartphone or tablet of any kind, make sure it is not running any app which

use background data, this includes Mail (via push), Social media apps, stock updates, weather

services and so on.

10. If you are using a clouding service, please deactivate it while using satellite connections, this

services can be from Microsoft, Apple, Dropbox or similar.

As mentioned before, these points are not a guarantee against background data, but more an

indicator towards what kind of behavior and approach you are recommended to have while

connecting to the internet while on a satellite connection.
