HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST TERM
MAY 2020
In response to the COVID-19 Coronavirus global pandemic, ICM has decided to conduct its
May 2020 intake completely online. The intake was originally scheduled to start on April
30 but will now commence on May 19 to ensure our instructors and students are fully
prepared to teach and learn in this digital environment.
As an additional option, students may defer their studies to September (there is no fee to
defer).
The intention is to resume normal operations and in-person classes for the September 2020
term.
As the situation evolves, we will continue to communicate with you. Please check your
registered email address regularly.

Online course registration date:
Students will receive emails from ICM with detailed instructions about enrolment. Be
sure to check your emails often!
Enrolment remains open until Orientation day, but students are strongly encouraged
to register on this date as popular classes and timeslots fill up quickly.

ENROLMENT
• Prior to the commencement of the term, all students will need to complete
two online learning modules, each running approximately 30 minutes.
• These modules will review Time Management and Academic Integrity in virtual
settings.
• Students are recommended to complete these modules prior to course enrolment.
• Failure to complete these modules prior to the start of the academic term could
result in deregistration from courses.
• More information on these modules to be sent by email in April.

Students with admission to UTP Stage I or who have a UTP I Math fee on their Letter of Offer are required to write the Math Placement Test. These students have been emailed.
If you need to write the Math Placement Test, don’t worry! The test is not a pass or fail test. It will have no effect on your GPA or grades at ICM. It is only to place you in the most appropriate math course for your level.
The test will be written online using a link emailed to you. Be sure to write the test before enrolment opens, or your enrolment will be delayed.
UTP Stage II students who have successfully completed year 12 math may be invited to practise their math skills prior to starting their studies with our free, online Math Skills Assessment. A link to the assessment will be emailed to eligible students about a month before course registration opens.

Are you blocked from enroling in certain courses? This is likely because:
• You have not cleared your conditions on your Letter of Offer
• You have not written the Math Placement Test (if applicable)
• You do not meet the pre-requisites or co-requisites to enrol
• If a course has a pre-requisite, you must first successfully complete the prerequisite course(s) before you can enrol (ex. year 12 math).
• If a course has a co-requisite, you must enrol in both courses at the same time if you have not already completed the corequisite.

ORIENTATION
Participate in online workshops and meet-ups throughout your first month at ICM. Full details about the online events will be emailed to you and shared on your Student Portal.
ONLINE MONTH OF WELCOME
❑ April 29 (recommended): Complete Online Learning Modules
❑ April 30 (recommended): Complete Math Placement Test (if required)
❑ May 4: Begin enrolling in your classes (Students who completed PASS with
minimum point total)
❑ May 5: Begin enrolling in your classes (Students who did not complete PASS)
❑ May 14 or 15: Attend your online Orientation
❑ May 19: Start your remote (online) classes for the Summer (May) Term
❑ June 8: VW (Voluntary Withdrawal) Deadline with no financial penalty
❑ July 20: VW Deadline with no academic penalty
IMPORTANT DATES
FAQS
Students do not need to have a confirmed visa in order to enrol or start their studies in the May term; however, they will need a confirmed visa in-hand to enter Canada for the September term. The September term is currently planned to take place in person.
DO I NEED A VISA TO ENROL?
If you do not currently have an approved visa, choose to enrol in courses, and your visa is later refused, your refund request would be based on the refund policy for current students – meaning you would likely be charged for the courses that you are enrolled in, even if your visa is refused and you no longer decide to come to Canada. Please see https://www.icmanitoba.ca/conditions-of-enrolment#refund for our Fee Refund Policy.
Students must voluntarily withdrawal, or VW, from their courses before the end of their third week of the term (as per the deadline in the Academic Calendar published in your Student Portal) if they do not want to be charged for the courses they are studying. If your visa is refused after that time period, students could still complete the courses they have enrolled in. If you are worried about a visa refusal and you don’t want to risk paying for courses at ICM if you cannot join ICM, then you may wish to defer to our September intake.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY FEES IF I ENROL AND MY VISA IS LATER REFUSED?
The Canadian government has temporarily banned all foreign nationals from entering
Canada. We are hopeful that these measures will be a positive step in quickly helping
to greatly reduce the spread of this virus, however there isn’t yet a timeline for how
long this travel ban will be in effect.
If the travel ban is lifted and my visa is approved, when should I travel to
Canada?
We recommend that students follow the travel advisories issued by their home
country, as well as Canada’s policies for foreign nationals entering Canada. Since the
May intake will be completely online, we do not recommend that you plan to travel
until closer to the September intake as you do not need to be in-person at ICM
for your May intake.
WHEN SHOULD I PLAN TO ARRIVE?
Yes, if you do not wish to take online courses, you may request to defer. Please send us an e-mail from your registered email address (or ICM Student Portal email address) asking to defer your studies to our next intake. There is no fee to change your semester. Students can request to defer any time before the start of the May intake.
CAN I DEFER MY START DATE TO THE NEXT INTAKE?
The official textbook list will be distributed closer to the start of the term. ICM is
exploring textbooks that have online options to ensure all students will be able to
access their textbooks regardless of where they are located in the world.
HOW WILL I GET TEXTBOOKS FOR MY CLASSES?
This is something every student will need to consider – will you be able to participate in courses online and be successful from home, or would you feel more comfortable deferring your intake and starting in-person in the September term? There is also the option to try the online courses for one or two weeks, and then choose to voluntarily withdrawal (VW) before the end of the third week of the May term.
If you enrol and then voluntarily withdrawal (VW) before the Withdrawal Date deadline (no financial penalty) as per the Academic Calendar, you would not be charged for the courses and you would not receive any academic penalties.

As we currently plan for the September term to take place in-person, students are recommended to apply for accommodations for the September term as soon as possible. Accommodations are offered on a first come, first served basis and popular options may be on a wait list 4-6 months in advance.
As an ICM student, you will have access to on-campus residences, homestay, and private off-campus accommodations. Students are responsible for booking their accommodations.
ICM recommends that new students consider on-campus residences or homestay for their first term, as these options are safe and secure to book from your home country.
If you choose to stay in a private, off-campus rental, it is strongly advised to personally inspect the property and meet with the building manager in person before signing contracts or leases or depositing any money.
