Welcome!

Allow me to start this off with a bang: I’ve personally never trained a player who wasn’t capable of shooting 95% or more from the free throw line. (How’s that for a huge claim!) Seriously though, the coveted 95% isn’t all that tough to achieve if you have the correct strategy in place. Let me use an analogy to illustrate this point: 2 + 2 = 4. (Yeah, yeah, back to grade 2 math – stay with me now.) 2 + 2 will absolutely, positively, ALWAYS equal 4. If anyone reading this knows of a way to make it equal something different, you can e-mail me your unheard of secret and I’ll give you, well… A high five or something. But until that day comes, two plus two will always add up to the big number four. Period. So what’s my big point from all of this complex mathematical analysis? If you put the same factors in place, all other things being equal, the result will be the same every time. If we use the exact same free throw strategy that we know to work for us every time, we will get the same result every time. (All things, of course, being equal – pressure, mindset, and other factors can impact our results… So we’ll stick to 95% instead of 100% for now.)

So why doesn’t every player on the planet shoot at least 95% from the line? Well, although most players think that they are using the same set-up, same technique, same everything every time, most players simply are not. (Hint: It comes down to ball position and various psychological mindsets). With that hard truth in mind, the goal of “How to Shoot 95% from the Free Throw Line” is to equip you with a step-by-step process for knocking down (you guessed it) at least 95% of your free throws, consistently, in game situations. I’ve done it over and over during the course of my career, and I know first-hand that it is possible. There’s a reason that people like Dr. Tom Amberry can make 2,750 free throws in a row. There’s a reason why Jeff Liles can hit 1415 free throws in an hour. It all comes down to having the correct formula, and in this manual (and DVD), I’m going to give it to you.

Now, before we begin: As you know, this manual is meant to accompany your Free Throw DVD. As you watch, follow along in this manual and take notes on anything you feel is important. Once you’re done watching, you can reference this manual quickly for any tune-ups and reminders you may need along your journey to 95%-‘dom. This is designed to be a cliffs-notes version of your DVD, so the bullet points come quick and rapidly. If you need more in-depth information on any one point, simply reference your DVD. With that out of the way, let’s get right into the content.

How to Shoot 95% From the Free Throw Line Key Principles: - Automation: Must be the SAME EVERY TIME from the ground up, and also psychologically. - Keep it simple, don’t do anything that will throw off correct ball position (spins, wraps, etc are OUT). The Routine

1.) Set feet 2.) Look at rim, deep breath and relax. Clear your mind. 3.) Look down at the ball, and set it in the correct position with the

inflation hole up, and fingers on the seam. 4.) 3 Dribbles w. inflation hole side up, looking down at the inflation

hole. 5.) Bend knees to correct depth and position, pause for a moment.

Begin drifting vision up towards the hoop. 6.) Bring the ball up through shooting pocket as you gradually rise

out of your squat position, your eyes drifting up towards the hoop.

7.) Follow thru and shoot. Breaking Down The Routine: The Feet

- 10 toes square to basket. - Strong-side foot slightly in front - Roughly shoulder width apart Look at rim. Take a deep breath.

Page 7: How to Shoot 95 From the Free Throw

- This is your first look at the hoop, and you will not look at it again until you’re into the act of shooting. DO NOT look at the rim throughout your routine. - Clear your mind and relax. Look Down at the Ball, Set Hand Position

- Inflation hole side up, fingers on seams or just below the seams (whatever is more comfortable). - Form “shooter’s T’ - Ball tightly controlled by finger pads. - Continue looking into inflation hole, imagine that it is sucking in all of your attention and nothing else is around you but the ball and basket. 3 Dribbles - Continue keeping ball position, don’t put any spin on dribbles. - Keep inflation hole side up throughout. - Look down into the inflation hole with each dribble. Bend Knees, Pause

Page 8: How to Shoot 95 From the Free Throw

- Inflation hole is up, hands are in position. - Squat down into correct depth (experiment and figure out what works for YOU), then pause at that angle for a split second (very short time – less than one second) - Begin drifting your gaze from the ball to the basket. At the time you’re in the squatting position, you should be simply looking strait ahead, not up at the basket or down at the ball. - DON’T be mechanical about this. It should all flow seamlessly and smoothly. Look Up, Shooting Pocket

- Hands still in position, begin rising out of the squat and bringing ball up through shooting motion.

Page 9: How to Shoot 95 From the Free Throw

- Begin looking at the rim only once the ball has reached the shooting pocket. Follow Thru

- Flick wrist, shoot the ball. Hand position has stayed the same, allow the ball to roll off of your index finger. Mental Triggers - This simple technique will put you into the same psychological mind-state before shooting (remember – everything must be the same every time you shoot a free throw). - Come up with a trigger word that you say to yourself before shooting (say it to yourself around the time that the ball has reached the shooting pocket during the upward phase of your shot.) - Work on anchoring that trigger word with the image of the ball going into the hoop. Do this during practice and training so that it comes second nature and is automatic during games.

The Wrap Up This free throw routine is simply what I’ve seen work time and time again.

Page 10: How to Shoot 95 From the Free Throw

It will work for you if you put it into practice for yourself and dedicate some time to actually integrating it into your game. Don’t expect it to be magical the first time you shoot. I’m not about hype and B.S. like that. The effectiveness of this free throw formula will come after you have practiced it over and over and ingrained it into your mind. Just think – if you can hit 9 out of every 10 free throws you take, and you’re a prolific shooter, defenders will have absolutely no options. They can’t play you tight and risk fouling, but they can’t give you an inch because you’ll bury it in their eye (again). You will become a truly unstoppable basketball player.

The Next Step At this point in our progression, it’s time to take some massive action. Yup, that means getting in the gym and tearing apart our 16 week program. So here’s what we’re going to do next. Go ahead and cue up your Lost Tapes DVD, and follow along in your Gym Swipe file. This way you will have a perfect understanding of each training day and each drill within those training days. See you over at The Lost Tapes! - Taylor
