Notes on Conflict:

Conflict is the struggle that the protagonist undergoes in a short story. There are two categories of conflict (internal and external), and within those there are five types of conflicts.

Internal Conflict The character struggles against his or her

own morals, beliefs, desires, weaknesses, etc.

1. Character vs. Self

External Conflict The character struggles against another

character or force beyond himself or herself.

2. Character vs. Character

3. Character vs. Society

4. Character vs. Environment (nature)

5. Character vs. Unknown (Supernatural)
