Medication into a Syringe

Step #1

ORemove the safety cap from the syringe.

Step #2

OPull back the plunger on the syringe to the mark equal to the amount of medication you need to draw up.

Step #3

OInsert the syringe needle into the rubber center on the top of the medication bottle.

Step #4

OTurn the bottle upside down.

Step #5

OPull back the plunger to the mark at the prescribed amount of medication.

Step #6

ORemove the needle from the bottle and inspect the medication in the syringe for air bubbles.

Step #7

OFlick the syringe to move bubbles to the top.

Step #8

OPush the plunger to remove the air bubbles.

Step #9

ODraw more medication if needed.

Step #10

OGive the injection as ordered and recap the needle.

OPay attention!ONo horseplay! OWhen taking the cap off of the

needle face it away from you.OAlways put the cap on the

needle when not in use.ODO NOT BEND THE NEEDLE!

LET’S PRACTICE!!!O Your dog “Fido” gets a shot of Dexamethazone

once a month for inflammation. The medication label has the following recommendations:

O 0.5ml for every 5 pounds.

O Fido weighs 20lbs.O How much medication should Fido receive each

shot?

O Draw up the correct amount of medication in your syringe. When you have finished raise your hand.

20 divided by 5 = 4, and 4 times 0.5 = 2ml
