Google Fast Flip

Simply put, Google Fast Flip is a “visual” version of Google News.

No, that does not mean that the news articles on Fast Flip are more “media-rich” (or, in other words, contain more images, videos, and such) but, rather, the news articles on Fast Flip are presented in image/graphic form.

What Fast Flip does, basically, is that it takes screenshots, or snapshots if you may, of recently published news articles from Google's various news publisher-partners (e.g., BBC News, New York Times, and the Washington Post), aggregates them, and presents them in a sequential order allowing users to browse, or as the name suggests, flip through them quickly and find articles easily. With Fast Flip, there's no more need to wait for the various elements of a news sites to finish loading.

If you're familiar with the microfilm viewing machines found in libraries (those analogue machines on which you can browse through and view photographed copies of documents), Google Fast Flip is very much like that. But instead of a microfilm viewing machine, you view the articles' “snapshots” on your computer's monitor.

However, since articles are presented in image/graphic form, you will not be able to read entire articles on Fast Flip unless the article is short enough to fit in the screenshot. To be able to read a complete article, you need to go to the source site of the article.

Using Google Fast Flip

Go to http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/

Scroll through the article thumbnails by clicking on either the left or right arrow located at either ends of the thumbnail strip.

If you've seen an article that you're interested in, simply click on the thumbnail of that article.

Google Fast Flip offers various filters/options by which you can browse the articles. These include browsing by popularity, section, topics, and sources. To choose a filter/option, simply click on your desired filter option/tab.

Searching

Google Fast Flip enables users to search for specific news topics just as they can on Google News on most other Google sites. This is simply done by entering a keyword or phrase in the search box located at the top of the Fast Flip homepage.

Potential Use

As mentioned earlier, Google Fast Flip enables users to browse through recent news articles quickly just as they could with real newspapers and magazines. Unlike in Google News, or even on Google.com, users do not need to click on links one by one and wait for a page to completely load to be able to read an article and only to find out later that it's not the article they need.

With Fast Flip, users can browse/scan through more articles with far less time, allowing them to keep up with the latest news with less time and effort.

From the viewpoint of market researchers and/or marketers, with its quick browsing facility, Fast Flip can serve as an invaluable tool in keeping themselves up-to-date on what's hot online, what people are reading about, and what they are presently interested in (with the “Popular” news filter).
