How to Use Quotes in Your Writing
To enhance what you are trying to say…
Introduce your quotations… A quotation should never suddenly appear
out of nowhere Some kind of information about the
quotation is needed. Name the author, give his or her credentials, name the source etc.
For example:
In an article in Newsweek, John Smith writes that dogs vary in the degree of shyness they exhibit: "The chow breed seems to be especially. . . ."
Discuss your quotations…
State the quote and then put something like…
This idea/feeling tells the reader that From this the reader can
understand/see that…
Begin the quotation in the middle of your sentence…
Embed the quote For example:
I live in the country where life is slow and quaint. Your sentence: Mary believes that "life is slow and quaint" in the country.
Citations
You always need to cite where quotes come from with parenthetical documentation
For testing purposes, however, the scorers will assume that you have gotten the material from the selection you have just read
Punctuation
Make sure all marks of punctuation come inside the quotation marks
