Dear Parents/Carers

WELCOME BACK!! Welcome back to Term 3.

I trust you all had a wonderful relaxing break. I am very excited to be Principal for a few months and look forward to working closely with you all, please do feel free to pop in and say hi!

BUILDING UPDATE:

You will have noticed the huge amount of work that has happened over the break. The slab for Learning Community One, our future Foundation – Y2 block, has been poured and the structural steel is being erected at this very moment. The foundation works for Learning Community Two are currently underway and the slab is due to be poured by the second week of August!

You will also have noticed the very attractive portable toilets on the car park. These are temporary toilets that have been provided by the Department of Education & Training while our girls’ toilets are fixed. They should be accessible and good to use on Monday – we will inform the children of the changeover once the time comes! The disabled toilet in the corner of the Roger Beech Hall is now clear and good to use! This facility is perfect for parents with toddlers waiting for collection of children at the end of the day.

I will continue to update you as best as I can on the developments of the building works as it progresses, but do feel free to pop in or catch me for a chat!

CURRICULUM:

On Monday 17 July, while you were relaxing at home for the last day of holidays, the staff attended school for their third curriculum day of the year. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to touch base with some of our whole school programs and develop our learning in these areas. Carlie Eriksen presented a range of new resources and ideas to support the Seven Steps to Writing Success program we use at Parkhill and had us all writing our own Sizzling Starts. Alex Davies reminded us of the philosophies behind developing a Growth Mindset and challenged us to think about how we develop this mindset in our students. Carly Gough shared a fun and insightful journey through a Performing Arts session sharing her knowledge of Neuropedagodgy with us. Our Education Support staff were lead through our KidsMatter Component Two training by Suzanne Carmody and then went to visit Burwood East Primary School as part of their professional learning.

It was certainly a busy, but very productive day.

Science Week

over the last week of Term 2 each class was immersed in a fun day of Science activities. Activities provided opportunities for students to investigate how people use science in their daily lives and describe situations where science understanding can influence their own and others' actions. The activities ranged from designing, making and testing struc-tures that were earthquake proof to inquiring into the Solar System and the distance be-tween the planets.

Monash Youth Services are currently encouraging all young people aged 10-25 who have a sig-nificant link to the City of Monash to complete the Monash Youth Plan Survey. The result of this sur-vey will contribute to the Monash Youth Action Plan which guides the themes and actions that the City of Monash will take in response to the needs of young people in the community.

Please share and complete the survey at our website www.myfs.org.au.

Everyone who completes the survey can go into the draw to win an Xbox One S. The winner will be notified via email on Friday 4th August 2017.

Neuropedagodgy and Music Education

As part of our curriculum day on Monday, teaching staff took part in a professional development sharing session with Carly Gough in the Performing Arts room, looking at how recent research in neuroscience can be applied to teaching music, and to primary education more broadly. Teachers sang, chanted, used body percussion and played the barred instruments - just like our students do each week in Performing Arts - taking traditional Chilean and Japanese children ’s songs and extending them into compositions with sections of improvised music. We then looked at how learning changes the brain physically; the ideal conditions for growth in the brain; the central role of movement to learning; the importance of joy, challenge, and a balance of repetition and novelty; and how the right tools can make us see the world differently. The richness of early learning experiences will affect how our kids engage with and experience concepts across their lifespans, and there was a lot of laughter as we explored how whole-body, multi-sensory and multi-modal learning happens in the Performing Arts classroom.

Year 3 Thank You!

A letter of thanks was recently received from The Salvation Army in relation to the inquiry action Year 3 students undertook learning about the needs and wants that we all may have.

The students learnt that not everyone has their basic needs met and that organisations such as the Salvation Army are there to help.

Year 3 and the Parkhill community collected lots of food to help out. The kindness shown by all was very much appreciated.

Anne McGregor, Dyon Hunt & Sarah Robinson Year 3 Teachers

Year 4 Incursion How does Monash Council deal with graffiti, rubbish, and people who break the law? Our Year 4 students had the opportunity to ask these questions and many more when Nick Adrianis visited on Thursday 29 June. This was to help us with our inquiry into rules and laws, democracy and the local government. Nick was blown away with the knowledge that our students already had and was impressed with the questions that were asked and freely admit that some of them challenged & surprised him. As a result of the session, the Year 4 students really wanted to take action to make a change in our local community, with the safe crossing of Arthur Street identified as an issue close to their heart. As such, they wrote a letter to the council asking for a crossing to be put in place there. They gathered signatures from students, teachers, parents and the local community to support their idea. This has been sent to the Traffic Engineering Team at Monash Council and we look forward to hearing their response after it has been carefully assessed.
