Jamie Hart said a social worker approached the family one day with money for groceries and gas.

“We said, ‘No we do not need this, we have tons of support from families and friends. Please givethis to someone else who needs it.’ And she just insisted that we take it,” she said.

Emma died September 2008, only living to see two months. In her honor, the family continues togive back.

“We just wanted to give back, and the Compassion Fund is where we felt our heart was and meantthe most with our experience with Emma,” Jamie Hart said.

The Variety Compassion Fund is available through hospitals like Mercy Medical Center, as well asothers in the Des Moines metro.

If there's one thing they need, it’s your help.

A donation can go to families like the Ericksons, whose toddler, Logan, recently went through aninvasive procedure.

“It's critical. You can't leave his bedside because you don't know what's going to happen,” saidSarah Erickson, Logan’s mom.

For Variety Compassion Fund, helping these families is simply of a labor of love.

“It’s all about being there for someone through the hardships and picking up the pieces,” said SheriMcMichael, executive director of the Variety Club.

For families, a donation is just the little boost they need.

“It’s crazy because you get so much support from families and friends, but when you get it fromstrangers, it’s such a neat experience,” Sarah Erickson said.

KCCI is partnering with the radio station 92.5 NASH FM for the Variety Club's annual radio-thonTuesday and Wednesday. Call 515-276-6669 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to make a donation, or youcan donate online at any time.
