An ever-growing network of trails is spreading across Bexar County, providing residents and visitors with beautiful opportunities for family fun, fitness and touring. More than 65 miles of developed greenway trails make up the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System and the San Antonio River Walk. A primary source of funding is the Linear Creekway Parks Development Program. Voters have approved this program four times since 2000, allotting a portion of sales tax to land purchases and trail development. Trails are now either built or planned for many of San Antonio’s creeks including Alazan, Apache, Culebra, Huebner, Huesta, Leon, Martinez, Salado, San Pedro and the Medina River.

Travel in a Straight LineDo not weave in and out of parked cars or ride between lanes of moving traffic.
Ride Where Drivers are LookingDon’t hug the curb. Ride in the right tire trackof the lane where you can be seen from a safe distance. Unless in a bike lane, don’t pass stopped cars on the right; motorists are not looking for other vehicles there.
Stay out of the Door ZoneStay out of the door zone. Ride 3-5 feet from parked cars even in a bike lane. Scan ahead.

Everyone will feel comfortable bicycling on this segment. These segments include trails, shared use paths, and roads with low speeds and fewer than four lanes. Such roads may contain a striped bike lane. This classification also includes bicycle lanes with a physical separation from moving traffic.
Most adults will bicycle these segments. Generally, these are streets with posted speeds of 30-35 mph and fewer than four lanes wide. A striped bike lane may or may not be present.

When you ride your bike around San Antonio, you will find some streets more comfortable and others more stressful. Most people would feel comfortable riding on a quiet residential street, but would feel quite stressed about riding on a six-lane road with a 40-mile-per-hour speed limit. As a result, most people avoid riding a bike on many parts of the roadway network because it is a stressful experience.
Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) is an approach that quantifies how stressful it feels to ride a bike close to cars, buses and other traffic (1). The Alamo Area MPO and City of San Antonio have worked together on a modified approach to evaluating traffic stress in the MPO’s study area.
Most residential streets do not have an LTS score because they are considered low-stress and fundamental to the bikeway network. The LTS methodology assigns a numeric stress level to many other streets (and other places where people can bicycle, like trails) based on these characteristics: posted speed limit, number of lanes, level of traffic congestion, and the type of bicycle facility present. In a few cases where staff perceive a street as more stressful than categorized by the LTS formula, the map reflects a higher stress level.
