    Checking Installed PCL Fonts

Your H P La serJ et printer comes wit h 45 scala ble typefaces (35 Int ellifont

You can also print a PostScript Typeface List. See Chapter 6, PostScriptPrinting, for more information.

The typeface list printout shows t he sta ndar d P CL typefaces a nd fonts, optiona l SI MM-based fonts a nd permanent soft fonts. How Much Memory Do You Need?

The a mount of memory you need depends on how y ou use your printer. Your

HP La serJ et 4V printer, which conta ins only the P CL la nguage, comes with4 MBytes of internal memory. The P CL printer language is compact a ndefficient, so you ca n print most t ext an d gra phics at 300 or 600 dpi wit houtadding memory to your printer.

You might wa nt t o add memory to your printer if you commonly printcomplex graphics, use ma ny d ownloaded t ypefaces, print complexdocuments or you w a nt t o use adva nced functions (such a s I/O B ufferingand Resource Saving). For the H P La serJ et 4V printer, you can a dd up to 64MB ytes of memory for a t otal of 68 MByt es.

Your H P La serJ et 4MV printer comes with 4 MBty es of internal memory, and a pre-installed 8 MByte memory SIMM for a total of 12 MBytes. Youcan add up to 32 MBytes of additional memory.

For storage of downloaded fonts, an optional 42.8 MByte PostScript DiskAccessory is available. See Chapter 6, PostScript Printing, for moreinforma tion a bout P ostScript printing.

Note To find out how much memory is inst a lled in your print er, print a self test.See Printing a Test Page, earlier in this chapter, for more information.

    How Your Printer Uses Memory

The printers memory receives, holds, a nd processes da ta from incoming

print jobs an d ma na ges down loa ded resources. Resources include PC L softfonts, sym bol sets, ma cros, a nd pat terns, a nd (when the P ostS cript option isinstalled) P ostScript fonts, forms, a nd pa tterns.

    Keeping Downloaded Resources in Memory

When only the P CL personality is insta lled, the printer uses all a vailablememory to ma inta in download ed resources. When tw o or more persona litiesa re insta lled, the printer reserves a portion of memory for each personalitysresources. This feat ure is called Resource Sa ving. It enables th e printer tokeep downloaded resources in m emory under m ost conditions.

Resource Saving in PCL-Only PrintersIn a P CL-only printer, ava ilable memory is a utomatically a llocated to keepdownloaded resources in memory. When you ad d memory to th e printer, more memory a utoma tically becomes a va ilable for Resource Sa ving. Youneed not change the amount of memory available for Resource Saving in aPCL-only printer.

Resource Saving in PCL and PostScript Printers

When the PostScript option is installed, Resource Saving automaticallybecomes available when sufficient memory is installed. By default, theprinter automatically allocates resources to each printer personality, depending on the a mount of memory ea ch personalit y needs. Most users w ill

not need to customize the print ers Resource Sa ving configura tion, but y oucanchange the amount of memory allocated to each printer personality.

If you download a large number of PostScript fonts, consider ordering theoptional 42.8 MByt e P ostScript D isk Accessory.

    How I/O Buffering Improves Performance

When you send a job to th e printer, you can get ba ck to work more quicklyafter you press Print from a softwa re program because your printer

a utoma tically reserves a portion of its memory, a n I /O buffer, to hold jobs inprogress.

In most cases, it is to your a dvant age to let the printer automat icallyreserve memory for I /O buffering. S ee Memory Configura tion Menu inCha pter 4 for informa tion about changing this sett ing.

For each MB yte of memory you ad d to your printer, 100 KB ytes w illa utoma tically be reserved t o hold print jobs in progress. This feat ure, calledI/O B ufferin g, a nd w orks like a prin t spooler. The print ers memory holdsthe job wh ile it prints, freeing up your system so you can get ba ck to work.

Note When you chan ge the IO BUFFERsetting, all downloaded resources are

deleted, unless they a re stored on the optional P ostScript D isk Accessory.

    Choosing Print Resolution

You can s elect 300 or 600 dpi (dots per inch) from th e RESOLUTIONitem inthe J ob Menu (see Cha pter 4). Your print er offers great ly improved printqua lity a t 600 dpi. To take best a dva nta ge of 600-dpi printing, use softwa reprinter drivers d esigned for your printer.

Note When you chan ge the RESOLUTIONsetting, all downloaded resources aredeleted, unless they a re stored on the optional P ostScript D isk Accessory.

This chapter assumes you ha ve an H P LaserJ et 4MV printer or tha t you

have added the P ostS cript langua ge SIMM to your HP L aserJ et 4V printer. To print in Adobes P ostScript la ngua ge you also need the right print erdriver for your softwa re.

The HP LaserJ et 4MV printer and H P J etDirect netw ork cards come with aprinter driver for Macintosh computers, bitm a pped screen fonts a nd th e HPLaserJ et Ut i l i ty and G uide.

    Printer Drivers for Windows

To make full use of your printers fea tures, you must use the P ostScript

    Printer Drivers for DOS Applications

For DOS applications, you must select a P ostS cript lan guage printer driverfrom with in your softw a re applica tion. If your softw a re does not include aPostScript language printer driver selection, it may not support PostScriptprinting. For more informa tion on selecting a nd insta lling a DOS P ostScriptprinter driver, see your software documentation or contact your softwarevendor.

How Much Memory Do You Need?

The HP LaserJ et 4MV printer comes with 4 MBytes of internal memory andan 8 MByte SI MM for a total of 12 MBytes of memory. If you ha ve the HPLaserJ et 4V printer and a re adding P ostScript , we recommend tha t youinstall a t least 8 MBytes of addit ional memory and turn I /O B uffering a ndResource Sa ving to OFFat the contr ol panel.
