HP SIM is the foundation for the HP unified server-storage

management strategy.HP SIM is a hardware-level management

product that supports multiple operating systems

HP SIM provides the basic management features of: System discovery and identification

Single-event view

Inventory data collection

Reporting

HP SIM has three types of systems: CMS, managed systems, and web-

browser clients.

The CMS with the managed systems together are called the HP SIM

management domain.

Central management server:

Each management domain has a single CMS.The CMS is the system in the

management domain that executes the HP SIM software and initiates all central

operations within the domain

Managed systems:

Systems that comprise a management domain are called managed systems.Asystem can be any device on the network that can communicate with HP SIM

Web-browser clients:

access HP SIM from any supported browser client

Hardware:

Any HPProLiant x86 or x64 system with the following configuration:

Minimum: 1.5-GHz processor with 1 GB RAM

500 MB free disk space recommended

Recommended: 2.4-GHz processor with 1.5 GB RAM

Software:

When you access the HP SIM from a web browser, you log in using the secure

HTML login page.The user name and password for the login page are the

same as your CMS operating system user name and password

SSH: is a program that enables you to log in to another system over anetwork and execute commands on that system. It also enables you tomove files from one system to another, and it provides authenticationand secure communications over insecure channels

HTTPS: is simply HTTP over SSL, a protocol that supports sending data

securely over the Web. WBEM: It provides access to both software data and hardware data SNMP: is a set of protocols for managing complex networks. WMI: mapper proxy must be configured so that HP Systems Insight

Manager can retrieve managed system data via the proxy.

The firewall must be configured to allow this traffic through thefirewall.The following ports are used:

WBEM uses HTTPS over port 5989

Web Agents use HTTPS over port 2381

DTF uses SSH-2 over port 22

Enabling automatic system discovery:

HP SIM uses automatic discovery to find and identify systems on the network. The

System Automatic Discovery task is the default discovery task and is disabled by

default. You can enable and configure the System Automatic Discovery task

Configure Managed Systems Configure managed systems as they are discovered, byconfiguring WBEM and WMI, SNMP, SSH access, and trust relationship.

WMI Mapper Proxy To retrieve managed system information on Windows systems,

enter the mapper proxy system host name and port number.

E-mail Enter the e-mail settings that the CMS will use to send e-mail notifications.

Privilege Elevation: Enable privilege elevation if we have HP-UX, Linux, and ESX

managed systems

The HP SIM Configure or Repair Agents tool is a quick and easy way to configure

Windows, Linux, and HP-UX managed systems to communicate with HP SIM from a

Windows CMS.

HP SIM now synchronizes Group Lists and User authorizations With Active

Directory

You can designate container and groups

HP SIM will create that same group name as a System List

HP SIM will then synchronize the System List with the container/group list

When the container/group membership changes, HP SIM will match the change
