New application note for HP-75 users Claire Medwid/PCD

A new application note describes how to transfer text files between the HP-75 portable computer and the H P 3000 or H P 1000 computers. T h e HP-75 to HP 3000/HP 1000 application note presents a data com- munications solution between the HP-75 and H P mainframes.

T h e HP-75 is the ideal solution for remote data collec- tion applications. With the bar code module and wand, the HP-75D can be used to collect data in the factory warehouse or in the field. Data is later transferred to the host computer for data reduction and processing.

T h e HP-75 to HP 3000/HP 1000 application note includes sample programs which allow the HP-75 to operate as a dumb terminal to the host computer. Files can be transferred either from the HP-75 to the host, or from the host to the HP-75. T h e procedure de- scribed does not require any special program on the host. but instead relies on the host's editor to perform the transfers.

T h e HP-75 interfaces directly to the host computer using the H P 82164A HP-ILIRS-232-C interface. Two programs are included in the application note. One uses the low-level 110 commands which are avail- able in the HP-75 I10 Utilities Solution Book (PIN 00075-130131, and the other uses the more advanced features offered by the I10 ROM (PIN 00075-15001). T h e two programs function identically, although the program utilizing the 110 ROM is somewhat faster and uses less memory.

T h e programs provide the following functions:

Automatic assignment of the HP-IL

Interactive configuration of the H P 82164A HP-ILIKS-232-C converter

Use of a data file to "remember" the communica- tions protocol

"Dumb" terminal emulation

Text file upload to a host HP 3000 or HP 1000 computer

Tex t file download from a host H P 3000 or HP 1000 computer

T h e HP- 7 5 to HP 3000/HP 1000 applications note (PIN 5954-1142) is available through the Literature Distribution Center. T h e programs listed in the application note are available on magnetic cards through PCD's Users' Library at a cost of $15 each. Order PIN 00075-03000 (requires I10 Utilities) or PIN 00075-0:3001 (requires 110 ROM) from: Hewlett-Packard Co., Users' Library, Dept. 39UL, 1000 N.E. Circle Blvd., Corvallis, OR 97330.

GENERAL HP offers long-term instrument support Fred C, Harper/ISD

Keeping an H P test system productive for as long as possible is important to getting full value from your customer's investment in equipment. For this reason, HP now offers customers a minimum of 10-year sup- port after product discontinuance on selected test and measurement products.

On November 5, 1984, a t the Autotestcon exhibition in Washington, DC, this longer support life will be publicly announced. ISD now is preparing a brochure to promote 10-year support. The brochure stresses fullsupport on the selected products, not just a "best efforts" level of support. This includes parts availability, documentation, hardware services, soft- ware support, training, and applications consulting.

T h e list of model numbers is being confirmed now, and will be printed in the brochure. With one or more models, the following types of current products will be on the 10-year support program: communications test, component measurements, counters, data acquisition/control, frequency standards, microwave instrumentation, microwave network analyzers, plot- ters, power supplies, RF instrumentation, signal analyzers, and voltmeters.

T h e products selected are primarily those configured into automatic test and measurement systems. T h e customers who have most strongly demanded a com- mitment to longer support are the military and the prime contractors. Commercial accounts most likely to be interested will be manufacturers and users of aero- space equipment.

For further information contact Fred Harper at ISD. T h e title of this brochure is "Hewlett-Packard's Long Term Instrument Support" and is available from Cor- porate Literature Distribution, PIN 5953-9633. Bulk shipments will be made to sales offices.

Sales Development Group formed Scott Sampl/LID

I would like to announce the formation of a new group within Loveland Instrument Division, the Sales Development Group. In many ways, the activities of the group will continue to be ones we have always been involved with. These include off-line technical support of the Regional Support Engineers (RSE) and Neophyte Training.

Sales development in its broadest definition includes all activities intended to increase sales of existing products. Do you have a pending big deal that would close sooner if only they could speak with the factory? Or do you need help signing OEMs because they need to understand our future direction as a division? Do you have an H P 2250 customer who would buy more systems if he understood the progress we've made in increasing reliability and improving the product's per- formance? If the answer is yes to any of these, sales development can help you be successful.

While you should continue to coordinate any factory 1

involvement with your customers through your RSE, you can be assured that they have a group willing to help them and you be successful.

Another DA/C promo seminar Bob Botos/LID

T o establish a new diversified customer base for sales of data acquisition and control products, we are pub- licizing a seminar "for the instrument neophyte" in 22 periodicals during November, December and Janu- ary. In addition to appearing in some standard maga- zines, the publicity will appear in American Biotech- nology Lab., Modern Plastics, Chemical Processing and Metal Progress.

During the same time frame, we are offering a one- day customer training course to these customers at a very nominal fee. T h e course will be designed to get these customers up-to-speed on the HP 3421Al 3056DL products, thereby relieving you of that burden.

Logistics have been covered in memos to all instru- ment DMs dated July 6 and August 29, 1984. If you 1 haven't seen these and are interested, call Rob Botos for a copy at 303-667-5000, ext. 2545.

Diata Acquisition !Se:lection Guide Scott Sampl/LID HP 1000 A-Series support in the In cooperation with New Jersey Division, Loveland Instrument Division recently published a Data

HP 7914ST cabinet Acquisition Selection Guide (PIN 5953-6982).

Mike Gordon/DMD

Designed to provide a quick and easy way to recognize the important features and differences between the H P 3421A, 3497A, 6940B. 69.42!A, 6944A, and 2250 systems, the guide is printed on card stock and punched for use in a binder or to keep on your desk. It has been distributed worldwicle a.nd extra copies are available.

T h e guide covers all the function cards offered, the sof1:ware and systems available i3nd the US version estimates a typical system price. With our wide breadth of data acquisition soluti~ons, it should help you arrive a t the right solution quickly.

IIP 1000 A-Series support of the HP 7914ST has slipped to early January, because of UL Testing. W e a re also changing the front door to allow A-Series sup- port in the cabinet.

Any customer wishing to install an A-Series CPU in an existing 7914ST cabinet will need to order an upgrade kit for a new front door.

@ New data acquisition course Grant Drenkow/LID

Data Acquisition and Control I?u~ndamentals (Course No. HP-50015A) is a three-day course that should provide you with a good introduction to the basic prin- ciples and concepts of data acqu:isition and control (DA&C). T h e course covers temperature, pressure, strain, and flow measurement:; ii!;ing different types of transducers. It also covers good techniques for grounding and guarding analog measurements. Finally, it provides an overview of control principles and covers some interface concepts between DA&C instruments and their controllers.

LID recommends this course for anyone with limited experience in the data acquisit.ior1 and control field. Altlnough the course is designed for customers and taught by SEs, a neophyte SE :should take this course prior to teaching it to customers. In addition, HP- 50015A is a prerequisite for S307 (Data Acquisition Specialty Training). T h e fundamentals taught in HP- 50015A will no longer be taught iin LID'S portion of S307. I t would also make a fine in.troduction to the Data Acauisition Peaking Seminars in February and March, 1.985.

HP-FE optimizes design environment Katharyn Mountain/LSID

With the introduction of HP-FE on December 1, Hewlett-Packard now offers a complete design system for mechanical engineering that is competitive in today's market.

HP-FE is a low-cost, desktop finite element solution which is introductory in nature, yet sophisticated in performance. T h e package does not require a back- ground in finite element techniques or computer pro- gramming. Its easy-to-use menu-driven structure does not require commands or preformatted input. Analysis capabilities include linear static, modal and dynamic and heat transfer problems. T h e user inter- face allows automatic mesh generation, interactive editing and effective pre- and post-processing for fast model verification and results interpretation.

In addition to being a modular system, HP-FE inter- faces with HP-Draft via HP-DesignLink. This link allows geometry to be passed from HP-Draft to the automatic mesh generator of HP-FE. T h e boundary is defined and the user does not need to calculate any geometry points. T h e mesh is automatically generated with the engineer inputting only the number of divi- sions for each line (or arc or curve) segment. T h e mesh generator can be used for all element types and it suggests a good element for each mesh region. Meshes can be verified with element shrinkage, zoom, hidden line removal, shading and illumination points. Mesh density can be varied easily while retaining the original geometry.

T h e post-processing capabilities of HP-FE allow the design engineer to visualize analysis results for immediate interpretation. Deformed structures can be superimposed on other loading cases or on the original mesh or boundary. Stresses can be seen in stress contour plots as isolines, stress vectors or isoareas. Mode shapes can be plotted and harmonic response can be visualized as a function of time for dynamic analyses. Thermal output for steady state and t tan- sient conduction and convection can be seen as isothermal plots in the form of isolines or isoareas.

HP-FE is a complement to large-scale finite element packages such as ANSYS' and NASTKAN , . En- gineers can take advantage of our low-cost high- accuracy finite element package without extensive training. Finite element models can be created quickly right a t the engineer's desk. HP-FE's ease-of-use allows engineers to come back to the system as fre- quently or infrequently as needed and not lose any efficiency a t the system. HP-FE is the answer for engineers who do not want to learn a difficult, expen- sive package with features they do not need. With HP-FE and the ME design loop, Hewlett-Packard has provided the one-vendor solution your customers have been waiting for.

HP's ME Design Loop speeds design, analysis, and production Katharyn Mountain/LSID

With the introduction of HP-FE, Hewlett-Packard now offers proprietary solutions for all parts of the mechanical design process. This Design Loop, shown below, s tar ts with an idea transformed into a design via HP-Draft. Upon completion of the preliminary design, the geometry can be transferred via HP IIesignLink to HP-FE for iterative testing and modification before prototyping.

This iterative design-analysis loop increases produc- tivity and enhances engineer creativity, leading to a desiign which is optimized prior tto expensive prototyp- ing. T o aid prototyping and final manufacturing, HP- Draft also links to numerical control programs for part machining. HP-Draft currently links to two NC pro- gramming systems sold by HP Series 200 OEMs, CAIP/CAP's Campanion systern (and Weber's Prompt syst:em. T h e HP-Draft/NC Systern link saves time and truly integrates part design to the manufacturing prolzess.

For complicated designs, furthei- optimization is achieved by verifying that the analytical results generated by HP-FE correlate with actual design per- formance. Modal analysis insti-un.lentation from Lake Stevens may be used to empir~~cally test the design to determine natural frequenciez and mode shapes. T h e test data may then be compared to the finite element analysis for verification. This FE verification saves time in modelling and refining the mesh before expensive CPU intensive analyses a re performed with the more powerful finite element programs.

@ T h e ME CAD Design Loop, as H P has implemented it, is a unique low cost problem solver for all aspects of the ME design process. Experts and neophytes will agree that these solutions increase engineering pro- ductivity and effectiveness in a desktop solution.

HIP-Draft - a true! CAD/CAM system Da;vrell Wight /LSID

An important portion of integrated CAD/CAM is nurnerical control machining. Bei~ng able to use the model and geometry created in the design stage to manufacture the part saves time and eliminates costly errors. T h e ability to do this defines integrated CAD/ CAM. HP-Draft can be combined with numerical con- trol (NC) or computer numerical control (CNC) systems to provide t rue low cost integrated CAD/ CAM solutions. HP-Draft is linked to two NC pro- gramming systems to provide this CADICAM solu- tion: Weber NC Systems Inc. ancl CAP/CAP Corporation.

T h e HP-Draft/NC systems are easy to learn and use. T h e first step in the CAD/CAM cycle is creation of the design in HP-Draft, with the geometry stored as a data file. This data file is then passed into the NC link where the geometry is selected and modified for the NC program. T h e machine tool instructions a re added, data is formatted to the correct controller language and the program is then passed on to the machine tool controller to make the part. T h e important aspect of this process is that the geometry is created only once, in HP-Draft. This helps speed design and assures accurate NC machining.

Another advantage of the HP-Draft/NC systems is that both the NC systems and HP-Draft are supported on the same hardware. This results in greater effi- ciency of shared resources and common peripherals.

T h e HP-Draft/NC systems provide the following advantages:

Overall design/manufacturing control

Reduced NC geometry input time

Shortened lead times and increased NC machining control

Increased accuracy

Lower manufacturing costs

Common hardware and shared resources.

HP-Draft ASSIST helps close Your application SE can help you present HP- raft to your potential customers. T h e HP-Draft ASSIST Data

sales Sheet (PIN 5954-0141) can help you in your sales Ulrich Mahle/LSID efforts.

September and October were the two best months for HP-Draft in North America. Most of the successes are coming from medium-sized companies who are look- ing for a reputable CAD business partner to grow with. T h e fact that HP-Draft can link to numerical control and finite element analysis gives customers a good growth path. Many of our customers either buy an NC system along with their HP-Draft system or plan on buying one soon after.

T h e HP-Draft ASSIST product has helped to close orders with smaller companies. Many smaller com- panies haven't had any prior CADICAM experience, have limited resources and can't afford to fail when making the transition from manual methods to CADI CAM. Security is very important.

Although HP-Draft ASSIST consists of modules covering the whole range, from the implementation of a single-user HP-Draft system through a multiple workstation SRM (Shared Resource Management) configuration, the base module, the single-user PIA (Project Implementation Assistance) should go with every system sale. T h e single-user PIA (PIN 98360Al65A) consists of the following components:

Implementation plan documentation

Management training

System installationlbasic start ing guidance for user

Four-day classrqom training for two people

Checkpoint meeting four to six weeks after classroom training.

At $3,000, it is priced very competitively and will help you to close deals when customers learn that HP not only sells them the necessary tools, but also helps them implement this new technology.

T h e benefits to you are numerous. You can be su re customers will be happy with this solution and addi- tional orders will come automatically as they expand. T h e System 75 is a medium-sized PBX with up to 400 lines of which 200 lines can be used for data. This medium sized PBX fits very well with a mid-sized HP 3000 installation. AT&T-IS, the largest PBX vendors in the US, expect the System 75 to gain a very large share of the $1 billion dollar market for PBXs of 100 to 400 lines. Now every such installation, in addition to all the other certified PBXs, is a vehicle for you to sell HP :3000s.

T h e PBX provides the benefit of using existing phone wires over distances of up to a few thousand feet and of speeds up to 19.2K bps. Add to that t he benefit of switching from one system to another as easily as you make a phone call. Also, moving workstations to new locations is as easy as moving a phone. In environ- ments where installed wiring is a big issue, the PBX is a very attractive alternative for workstation to system communications. Such environments are schools, high-rises, old b u i l d i n ~ s , airports and other leased facilities, etc.

HP 3000 Series 4 8 R competes successfully against IBM 4341 Carol Robertson/FRI)

IBM has always been strong in selling systems to law firms; however, this time they were not strong enough to withstand HP's proposal. Harvey Shovers (Milwaukee sales o f f~ce ) sold the first HP 3000 to a law f ~ r r n in the M~Iwaukee area. Not only did he beat out IRM but IBM's office is across the street from the 'q Iaw firm.

Harvey had first proposed a new Series 48 ; however, this proposal was no longer price competitive when IBM slashed their prices on the 4341. Realizing the need for a less expensive system, Harvey quoted the customer a remarketed Series 4 8 and succeeded in ousting IBM. Then to clinch the deal, H P S E Mike Riedel was successful in convincing the customer to convert his existing general automation software to the H P 3000.

When you a re competing against IBM in price- sensitive situations, quote remarketed products to win the deal.

DISTRIBUTION HP SFD/3000 tested on HP 3000 Series 37 Ron Wade/lRO

T h e H P 3000 Series 37 is quiet, yet powerful, and both the hardware and the new "T" MIT version of the operating system seem very solid. T h e Series 37 will no doubt open up many new sales opportunities for H P SFDl3000 (System for Distributors) and HP OM13000 (Order Management) because of its lower price and its less fussy operating environment requirements.

Information Resources Operation's functionality test- ing shows that the new processor runs SFDl3000 and OM13000 programs without a hitch. In fact. for the tests with smaller numbers of users, we couldn't tell that we weren't running on a n HP Series 24 (see graph) It wasn't until the 12-15 user mark that system performance degraded seriously, due pri- marily to the slower processor and disc drives. Our testing was done using two HP 7914 disc drives instead of the new rack mounted HP 7945 drives. Probably only the smallest customers will be able to fit their data on the two 55M byte 7945 drives. T h e HP 7945 drives a re about 20-25% slower than the H P 7914s that we tested with, so this should be taken into consideration when using the performance graphs.

For the performance test we ran one copy of the sales order printing program SOPRINT, and we varied the number of copies of the sales order ent ry program SOREGULR. T h e user think time was a leisurely seven seconds, which is by no means a flat-out input level, but might come close to approximating the situation where the order entry clerks are taking orders over the phone. If you a re looking a t selling a system that will be used more heavily, be aware that the same level of performance degradation will occur with fewer users.

In addition to varying the number of users, we tested all of the available memory configurations - K, 1, and 2 M bytes. We feel that the 2M byte configuration makes the most sense for SFDi3000 users. T h e !5IM byte test started experiencing serious memory pres- su re with only three order ent ry users. T h e 1M byte test was good to about 7-8 users but may not be a n economical alternative since the only way to get to 1M bytes is to buy two %M byte boards. If, by using up this extra board slot you are forced to sell the expan- sion box, it may be more economical to get the 2M byte board instead. T h e resulting performance improvement and margin for expansion will no doubt result in a happier customel-.

With the memory question pretty well decided and the number of users known. the biggest thing left to figure out is the disc configuration. We have revised the Ilisc Space Worksheet in our Performance1 Configuration Guide,.' including calculations for 55M byte and 132M byte disc drives. Copies of this

revised worksheet are available from Kelly Lister at IRO, COMSYS Dl00. T h e cleanest situation is for the very small customer who will fit on the two HP 7945 drives. Installation is a snap, and the new tape cartridge unit will back these discs up in less than an hour. If you run the numbers on the Disc Space Worksheet and find that 110M bytes is not enough, you will have to consider other configurations. Don't forget that other drives may have more stringent site requirements like separate power circuits, no carpet- ing, dust and heat limits. Perhaps cost and future expansion requirements should be the determining factors a s much as anything. If a single spindle con- figuration offers a definite cost advantage, this will probably work pretty well if the primary application is SFDl3000 because most disc accesses are serialized, thus negating much of the advantage of multiple spindles. *Performance/Co~tf2Ku~atior~ Guide for I)istributio)~ Murlagernerrt Systems, availabli~.frorri the Literature Ilistvibu tior? National Paper Trade Association show generates leads Bill Lynch/IRO

Hewlett-Packard's presence a t the recent National Paper Trade Association (NPTA) show in Chicago, September 22-24, was well received by the partici- pants. Forty-five quality leads were generated from this show and will be distributed to the various sales offices throughout the country.

It was evident that the majority of people talked to were acutely aware of the importance of being suc- cessfully automated within the next few years to effectively compete in their markets.

Additionally, they were very interested in vendors that could provide a single solution for hardware and software. This was evidenced by the numerous times we were asked if we provided our own software to run on our computer equipment. We not only could answer yes to the question, but provided an impressive list of installed customers in the paper industry using our solution. This generated immedi- ate interest and enthusiasm in the form of questions about H P SFDl3000 and requests for printed informa- tion along with a call from an SK.

T h e H P 150 provided an impressive representation of HP's capabilities in attracting prospects. We were also very encouraged a t the apparent quality of the leads that were collected a t this show since many had systems already but were looking for another solution to handle their expanding businesses.

We can clearly see that our investment in this show will result in more sales to this highly competitive industry.

VERTICALS Success through teamwork in HP's vertical healthcare market Tom Ortez/HCP

With healthcare now targeted as a vertical market for HP products, SRs from the computer group and the Health Care Productivity Operation joined forces recently to sell an integrated solution to the medical industry's business management needs. This solution, referred to as the HP Healthcare Information System, consists of financial and patient care management software run on the HP 3000 and compatible with other HP computer products (see Computer News, September 1 , 1984).

Earlier this year, two hospitals which owned HP 3000s but used financial management software developed by other manufacturers, ordered HP's healthcare financial management software. T h e two Neely sales region customers, Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, OR, and Pleasant Valley Ho:jpital in Camarilla, CA, also upgraded their computers lo HP Series 48, and added more HP terminals and perilph- erals to support the increased utilization of their systems.

T h e most recent order in Neely ($1.3 million) was placed by Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO, through Kay Beckham of the Englewood sales office. In addition to financial and patient care managerrlent software, the hospital is acquiring an HP 3000 Series 68, a variety of peripherals including a laser prinler and a graphics terminal, and office automation prod- ucts such as HP Word and the Touchscreen personal computer.

HP received the sale despite tough competition from IBM. Our success is largely attributable to the syn- ergistic efforts of Englewood sales team members Norm Overacker (CEDM PT03), Kay Heckham, and Laura Harvey and the HCP marketing organization in Andover.

NETWORKS Networks and standards mailing sent to prospects Miriam Flood/FSD

At the National Computer Conference (NCC) in July, Hewlett-Packard participated in the National Bureau of Standards booth, where we demonstrated a multi- vendor network. Even though this is not an orderable product, many conference attendees requested further information on HP products.

In response to these requests, Colorado Networks Operation is sending a letter and a packet of informa- tion to prospective customers. Included in this packet is the AdvanceNet Data Sheet and brochure, and the Networking and Data Communications Guide. The letter, which is being sent in early November. instructs the prospects to contact their local HP sales office for further information. You will be receiving a copy of this letter in the December Momentum mailing.

Please be aware that you may be receiving these calls, and be prepared to answer questions on networking and standards. If you need to brush up on this topic, refer to the following publications:

Now with the new price reductions on the H P 79'1 11 12/14, and the introduction of the H P 7941145 disc products, you have one of the strongest mid-range mass storage solutions in the marketplace.

HP mid-range disc performance

Disc performance is dependent on your customer's selection of CPU, application program, and disc con- figuration. DMD has designed a standard model which represents the maximum number of 110s per second you can expect from each of our disc drives.

T h e following chart shows a single disc configuration as a maximum number of 110s per second and a two disc configuration as a range of disc 110s per second. T h e reason for using a range on a two disc configura- tion is that performance will vary with the amount of overlapping 110s generated by the application.

For US O ~ l y

Software Directory for Hewlett-Packard Graphics Plotters (PIN 5957-9466) describes HP and third party software packages which support HP graphics plotters. Each page of the directory covers a different package. giving the name of the package, the software vendor, a brief description of the package, and a list of the computer systems which support the package. including the memory requirements.

T h e directory covers personal computer and mainframe software packages. All software packages are organized into six major application areas: inte- grated kvith graphics, graphics presentation, project management, scientificlstatistical analysis, design, and engineering.

We suggest you use the directory for I-efel-ence - not as a customer hand-out. Customers will be able to buy the directory for about $3 through Cornputel Supplies Operation ( G O ) (1 -800-538-8787). Each retail dealer will receive a free copy in the mail.

Printer compatibility

There is a logical growth path within the HP 25613 printer product line. All printers in the family possess similar feature sets, addressable through HP's Printer Command Language (PCL). PCL is a printer language common to our printer products, and allows HP customers to protect their initial software invest- ment while ensuring plug compatibility between printers. Eventually, all H P printers will use PCL, offering this valuable software compatibility feature.

Francis Scarella/GPCD

With an installed base of 7,500 units, the HP 3075Al 3076Al3077A data capture terminals, introduced by the Grenoble division in 1978, have been the best sellers in their category for several years. However, due to falling demand, the 307X terminals will be obsoleted on November 1 , 1985.

Your customers will appreciate a one year obsoles- cence notice, as most of the current HP 307X sales a re due to add-on units on existing applications (some involve 200 or more terminals). ' l 'h~s will leave them enough time to s w ~ t c h to the new HP 30XlA industrial workstation terminal, which costs one third the price, and offers an incomparable protection against harsh environment.

There is a s t r o n ~ trend today to bar code applications in the industry, and this is where the 3081 A comes in, with its wide choice of bar code readers for labels, documents or ID badges.

HP 2392A price increase Steve Butler/R T D

As of January 1 , 1985, the price for the HP 2392A will be raised to $1,375 US list. This 6%) increase is due primarily to an increase in parts costs. ?'he prices foi- the 2392A options remain the same.
