HPRF goals at PIP2IT

1. To test and qualify the amplifiers

– All frequency and powers of amplifiers were operated to achieve PIP2IT beam goals

– Prototype SSR1 amplifiers from DAE-ECIL were qualified and installed in PIP2IT as soon

as they were received.

2. To test and qualify the HPRF distribution systems

– These systems performed well

3. To test the integrated RF system, LLRF, RFPI, HPRF, SRF and Controls with

beam

– Each stations were operated in pulsed, CW, with and without beam.

System Overview

• RFQ

– (2) 75kW 162.5MHz amplifiers (Sigma Phi)

– (2) 75kW Circulators (Ferrite)

• Buncher

– (3) 3kW 162.5MHz (Comark)

– (3) 7kW Circulator (McManus)

• HWR

– (8) 7 kW amplifiers (Tomco)

– (8) 7kW circulators (McManus)

• SSR1

– (8) 7kW 325MHz amplifier (DAE-ECIL)

– (8) 28kW circulators (McManus)

RFQ HPRF

5/6/2021 PIP2IT Retreat4

Page 5: HPRF at PIP2IT

• RFQ Amplifiers had 3 separate DC power supply failures via IGBT failures

– Appears to be an end-of-life issue, further investigation underway

– Propper preventative maintenance should address these concerns

• Corrosion issues on the can-bus caused controls issues

– Dave was able to address this for the time being

– Sigma Phi controls upgrade is being discussed, and will be conducted at F0

• Roof blocks trapped directional coupler, which made for some tricky

measurements.

• Buncher amplifier cross talk remains a potential issue

– Bad cables were the cause of some earlier issues

HWR HPRF

5/6/2021 PIP2IT Retreat6

Page 7: HPRF at PIP2IT

• HWR amplifiers were quite reliable

• Bias coupler issue on cavity 3, now has 3-fold protection in place

– DC PS local trip at 2mA

– PLC permit will trip at 2mA

– RFPI fast current trip 2mA

• RF leak issue – mentioned by Joe

– Two cave antennas per cryomodule are part of the RFPI system

– RF leak check on HPRF system part of ORC and documented in travelers

– Component in question needs redesign

SSR1 HPRF

Page 9: HPRF at PIP2IT

• All SSR1 cavities were powered by DAE-ECIL in kind contribution

• Fuse failure upon initial turn on,

– Replacement fuse holders and new fuses installed in compliance with US electrical code

• SSR1 Amplifiers had (15) DC power supply failures

– 12 appear to be from a short on the control power board internal to the PS

– Further investigation on the other 3 underway

– Dave Peterson has developed an external control power work around

• RF slice failure near end of run

– Further investigation underway

• Leaking water supplies (Action: internal water connections specified in new TRS)

• Distribution RF leaks found – mentioned by Sasha

– Anodized flanges on the coupler

– HV Bias Tee mechanical issues also caused leaks

SSR1 HPRF

• Operations Readiness Clearance (ORC) process was streamlined for SSR1, and

process will be repeated for the CM Test facility

1. Pre-ORC Traveler – utilized to verify all (low/no power) interlocks, connections and

acceptance tests [Traveler 464622 Rev B]

2. ORC follows

3. Low power test traveler – operating the RF system at less than 100W for RFPI checkout,

LLRF calibration, powered interlock testing, RF leak checking

4. Pass off to operations/SRF

• User interface for general RF needs more development

Integration- Operations

5/6/2021 PIP2IT Retreat10

Page 11: HPRF at PIP2IT

• Each amplifier had two separate controls paths, PLC and Ethernet

– The PLC controls were essential for RF operation, various Ethernet issues arose

throughout PIP2IT

• Configurable IP addresses are required, (Action: amplifier requirements modified)

• EPICS control was integrated into HWR and SSR1 amplifier controls

– Pierrick did a nice job

– More integration time will be useful. (Action: F0 Test facility, will have EPICS controls)

• Amplifier input padding caused for confusion and clipping on HWR and SSR1

• GDR with beam loading was a great success, more time to analyze the beam

loading would be nice

• LLRF/HPRF/RFPI trip state logic should be better understood

– Planned QPS upgrade would have addressed many of these issues

It’d be helpful to schedule integrated RF system testing early in the process

Integration- LLRF

Page 15: HPRF at PIP2IT

• No risks were retired

• RT-121-03-002 – amplifier performance will be more thoroughly addressed at F0

continued testing

Impact on Risk

5/6/2021 PIP2IT Retreat15

Page 16: HPRF at PIP2IT

• The amplifier technical specifications have been significantly modified to

incorporate lessons learned from PIP2IT operation. Key changes

– Reliability and Maintainability

– Quality control

– Controls

– Electrical Configuration

• RF leak standards added to all RF components and testing integrated into the

process.

• The ORC process at PIP2TF for RF commissioning should follow SSR1 suit.

Summary of Changes Based on Results of PIP2IT Tests

Page 17: HPRF at PIP2IT

Amplifiers

• RFQ amplifiers are being moved out to F0 for continued testing, controls upgrades

• HWR amplifiers have no plans for change

• SSR1 amplifier to be routed into powered loads, continued testing and

maintenance will occur

PIP2TF

• First 32kW 650MHz amplifier is being tested at F0

• Next 650MHz amplifier due to arrive at CMTF in June to be used at PIP2TF
