It’s confession time: For about threeweeks last month, every time I used mygarbage disposal, it leaked water under

the sink. Instead of tackling the problemright away, I went for the avoidance strate-gy. I stuck a vase under the disposal andemptied it periodically. When I forgot toempty it, the sound of water spilling overthe vase served as a quick reminder.

In my defense, I knew I needed a newdisposal, and I didn’t have the time to dealwith the problem right away. How did Iknow? When I had some work done lastyear, my plumber noticed the disposal wasquite old and on its last legs. He warnedme it would go soon. The disposal wasabout five years old, but it was not a “nice”one. In fact, this model only had a one-yearwarranty, so making it five years wasn’t half-

bad. With the new garbage disposal, I’mdetermined to make it last well beyond itswarranty. Here are some tips to prolongingits life span.

• Keep it cold. Use cold water when run-ning the disposal. Hot water can melt fat, which can eventually solidify down the pipeand clog your drains.

• Avoid fibrous foods. The fibers can tangle andcause blockages. Thingslike celery, ar tichokes, onionskins and bananapeels are better left for acompost pile. Ditto forstarchy foods, like potatopeels, which can turn intoa paste and clog the drain.

• Throw in the ice. Putice down the disposalperiodically and run it asyou normally would . The

ice helps to clear the disposal of fooddebris. For an added boost of clean, makeice cubes from citrus juice.

• Run the water. After turning off yourdisposal, let the water run for 30 to 60 sec-onds. This will help to clear the drain offood particles.

• Grind immediately. Standing food may

contain acid or oils that can eat throughseals. Run the disposal right away and don’tforget to use cold water and let it run after.

According to appliance.net, the averagelife span of a garbage disposal is 10 to 12years. Of course, this life span fluctuateswith the disposal you choose. Check thewarranties to see projected life spans. Thiswill give you insight as to whether youshould repair a leak or buy a new disposal. As always, consult a professional if you areever in doubt.

Tips for Extending the Life of Your Garbage Disposal

BY MELANIE MEI

Re-branding is considered a risky movefor any business to make. So, why re-brand an already successful PV com-

pany and risk failure? Especially when you’realready at the top of your game?

Risource Energy president DarrenFurumoto has heard this question a lot lately.Until May 2012, he was the head of opera-tions at Alternate Energy — one of the mostsuccessful solar companies in Hawaii.

After an enlightening trip to Japan andmany years spent following Copper-Indium-Selenium (CIS) technological growth by SolarFrontier (SF), Furumoto seized the opportu-nity to become the first in Hawaii, andAmerica, to integrate SF’s CIS panels into res-idential installations. He’s always on the huntfor ideal, self-sustainable solutions and hasfound such a solution in Solar Frontier’s CISpanels.

Risource Energy has taken bold stepstoward shaping the photovoltaic (PV) indus-try’s future in Hawaii by introducing 2nd gen-eration, all-black, Japanese-made CIS panels ina market congested by crystalline. CIS isproven worldwide to harvest 9 percentmore energy from the sun than crystalline.

The company dream is simple — to be an“ideal choice in self-sustainability.” While hav-ing a dream is important, it definitely doesn’tguarantee success. Having the right productand the man power to make it happen arekey, and that’s where three unique individualscome in. Darren Furumoto, Charles Lum andDean Wakatsuki, the photovoltaic specialistsof Risource Energy, explain CIS technology:

Q: What is your educated opinionon second generation CIS panels vs.other panels on the market? A: (Charles) I’ve worked on thousands ofinstallations using crystalline. After workingwith Solar Frontier’s CIS panels, there was nogoing back to crystalline, especially after see-ing the remarkable performance results. CISmodules by Solar frontier are the best. Hawaiideserves access to these panels.

Q. Why are Risource Energy PV systems so effective?A: (Dean) In my 10 years as a PV tech, Ilearned the most common issue with PV sys-tems is “inverter failure.” Our design philoso-phy of centralized inverters (SMA/Power 1)paired with Solar Frontier CIS panels allows

us to overcome this. In the event that ourinverters do break, they’re easily replaced. Wedon’t even have to go on the roof!

Q: Why risk re-branding Risource?A: (Darren) Starting over was a tough butnecessary move. When two of the mostseasoned installers I’d worked with(Charles and Dean), asked to help foundRisource Energy, I knew it was a well-calcu-lated risk. Working with a quality product isrewarding and makes up for the challengeof re-branding a company. Without astrong team in place, I wouldn’t have had asmuch confidence starting over.

Besides a quality system, service is a prior-ity for most customers when choosing a PVcompany.

The following is a testimonial fromcustomer Linda Kaakimaka:

I got estimates from many reputablePV companies, but liked the appearance of theCIS panels. My main concern was that it was arelatively new panel. After much research, feed-back and the 10-year Risource Energy servicewarranty — on top of the 25 year Solar Frontierwarranty — I felt comfortable choosing Risource.

I now save $600-700 per month, even in win-ter! I account much of that to the light-soakingtechnology of CIS.

I never wait long for a call back from Charles;he’s fantastic and very patient, answering allquestions in a timely manner.

The production of energy has been even bet-ter than we expected.

The blend of knowledge, hard work andCIS technology is likely what’s led this compa-ny to become the “No. 1 leading authorizedintegrator of Solar Frontier CIS modules inHawaii and America.” Risource Energy isgrowing quickly and enjoying steady successas a PV company. Being a pioneer of the CISmarket is not an easy endeavor, but theRisource Energy team has accepted the chal-lenge with a smile.

Can you handle the risk of harvesting themost energy per watt possible? Make energy-saving history with Risource Energy and CISpanels!

W ith a host of certified flooring installers at its dis-posal, American Carpet One offers customers ameans of meeting the highest industry standards

while providing the best installation quality and serviceavailable.

Certified Floorcovering Installers (CFI) is an internationalnon-profit organization established in the early 1990s totrain and certify installers with the end goal of ensuringthat the installers working on homeowners and other cus-tomers’ projects are indeed qualified. Larry Marvel, installa-tion manager at American Carpet One, explained thatinstallers working at the company need to pass both writ-ten and performance tests in order to gain CFI certification, and must display honesty and integrity.

All journeymen carpet installers at American CarpetOne were recently certified by CFI — a first for the indus-try in Hawaii. They joined a select group of more than40,000 CFI installers nationwide that are certified to installmany products and floor coverings to meet industry stan-dards. These installers are identified by the CFI seals onboth their uniforms and work vehicles.

“They set the standards, they tell us what carpet is spec-ified for certain jobs,” said Marvel. “How those types of car-pet should be installed, how the seams should be sealed.Basically, they tell us from start to finish how the job shouldbe completed while meeting industry standards. It’s a lotmore than just putting rug on a floor.”

Marvel explained that American Carpet One’s certified

installers are skilled in a wide range of differentinstallation methods. Tack-down installation occurswhen the carpet is set down against two walls andpower-stretched across the carpet pad to the tworemaining walls. The carpet must be stretchedproperly to avoid wrinkles and to promote evenwear across the surface according to the type andthickness of cushion utilized underneath.

With a glue-down installation, the carpet isattached directly to a surface using an adhesive that isapplied to the carpet backing. Marvel noted that this type ofinstallation is preferred in commercial settings, as the carpettends to receive 35 percent more wear in high-traffic areas.

“In both types of installations, its about understandinghow to do a proper layout, where to place the seams cor-rectly and align the direction of the naps, how the carpetturns to the walls; all these parts play key roles in a goodcarpet installation,” said Marvel, who has been involved inthe carpet installation industry for nearly 40 years. “For alltypes of installation, whether tack down or glue down, theindustry sets a standard, and our installers have to meet orexceed those standards to the customer’s satisfaction.”

Dealing with covering stairways or rooms that aren’t

square or present interesting angles are just some of thedifficult situations that certified installers deal with on a reg-ular basis. The CFI installers have access to a vast networkof colleagues within the association that can offer advicebased on practical experience.

“These installers have to be experts in seam construc-tion, power stretching, trimming, pattern alignment and a lotof other skills that it takes to install carpet in a customer’shome,” Marvel said. “A customer using a CFI installer can beassured that they’ve already been approved and tested bytheir peers in the trade, and that the installation in theirhome or business is done right the first time.”

Quality and integrity are the top pri-orities for Jimmy Suh when itcomes to assisting customers with

a wide range of painting projects.“I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my

main goal is to produce a quality job —that’s the most important thing,” said Suh,owner of Deep Purple Painting.

In early 2010, Suh moved to Hawaii tobe closer to family and friends, and broughthis successful painting business with him tothe Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20years in San Francisco building his businessand cultivating a sterling reputation for pro-ducing quality results. Whether the jobinvolves painting a home’s exterior, or afew walls of a commercial space, DeepPurple Painting has it covered.

Prior to each job, Suh confers with theowner to determine the necessary stepsinvolved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter and his experienced crew con-sider many factors, including the relation-ships between colors and how they com-pliment one another, and present theowner with the viable options. Otheraspects that Suh considers include the tex-ture of certain surfaces and what variety of

paint will coat them in a way that protectsand beautifies for years to come.

Suh has cultivated a host of positivereferrals from satisfied customers — adirect result of his respect for his clientsand their needs. When meeting with Suh,customers are encouraged to view thecompleted jobs in person to fully under-stand the stellar workmanship that goesinto every Deep Purple project. After thelook and feel of the project is determined, the client is presented with a written esti-mate of both the cost of the job as well asa timeline detailing the work to be per-formed.

“The word-of-mouth referrals that Ireceive come from the extensive prepara-tion and excellent results from numerousjobs, both residential and commercial,” saidSuh of many notable projects in bothHawaii and San Francisco. “That’s why peo-ple like how I do business.”

Suh has honed his craft for over a quar-ter century, and can quickly diagnose prob-lems with paint jobs that have resulted inunsightly chipping and peeling. Suhexplained that the tedious tasks of primingand smoothing surfaces and filling in anycracks or imperfections with quality patch-ing materials go a long way in ensuring a

paint job’s effectiveness. He stressesquality and an honest approach tocustomer service throughout eachproject he’s involved with.

“A painter needs to follow theproper procedures,” Suh said.“That’s why there are so manyproblems here in Hawaii with paint-ing projects. You need to prime thearea, and prepare it properly. It’s worththe price for a premium paint job that’sdone right the first time, saving time and

money in the long run.”For more information, or to set up a

consultation with Suh, call 739-2000.

Homeowners have known for yearsthat remodeling a kitchen or bath-room can recoup as much or

more than the cost of the job. Recent stud-ies in Honolulu have shown that replacingan old, worn garage door can recoup thehomeowner 120 to 180 percent of the jobcost, depending on the quality and featuresof the garage door.

This is because of the enhanced curbappeal of properties with an attractive, new garage door. The garage door is thelargest moving part of the house and formost properties, it is the first or secondpart of the house one sees from the street.

Garage doors are available in galvanizedsteel, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Most doors are available one-sided, insulatedand two-sided with insulation. Even a mod-est, new one-sided garage door will allowhomeowners to recoup more than the door

cost in added resale value to the house.Servco Raynor offers a wide variety of

door styles, sizes and materials. Our bestselling Raynor ShowCase door bringsbeauty and instant curb appeal to anyhouse with a substantial woodgrain textureembossment. But good looks are just thebeginning. Beneath the surface, Showcase isalso one of the most stringently engi-neered garage doors you can own. Itsstrong, two-side steel design provides

superior strength, unrivaled durability andunsurpassed protection against noise, impact and weather.

ShowCase is made from rugged, galva-nized steel inside and out. Its two-sided steeldesign encases a core of thermally bonded,CFC-free, expanded polystyrene insulation.A full 2 inches thick, ShowCase featuressandwich-style construction and providesthermal protection at a 10.25 R-value.

ShowCase has heavy-duty, hot dipped,

‘Owner Builder’ factsBY KAREN NAKAMURA

HRS-444 is the state law thatregulates contractor licensing. This law is meant to protect

consumers from liability, fraud and work-manship that does not meet buildingcodes and building standards. Licensedcontractors are registered with the stateDepartment of Commerce andConsumer Affairs, (DCCA). The statehas their names, addresses, social securi-ty numbers or fein numbers and it canfind them to get restitution.

The Owner Builder Exemption fos-ters unlicensed individuals to shift lia-bility on to the owner without theowner knowing the consequences.Complaints have been filed withRegulated Industries and ComplaintsOffice (RICO), and in many cases ittakes years of investigation to sub-stantiate the cases. The result: Ownerscannot get restitution for their lossesand are left with a situation that deval-ues their investment.

Yes, we are all “related” in Hawaii orsomeone we know works in the con-struction industry. Yes, building costs inHawaii are the highest in the nation. Isthe risk worth taking when the valuesof our homes exceed $625,000? Isthe risk worth it when the new build-ing materials and building systemsrequire specialized training? Is the riskworth taking when your net worthand lives are impacted?

Owners, please educate yourselfbefore signing the Owner Builderbuilding permit application. Whenyou sign this permit application, youare the contractor on record and youare liable for the safety of all workers

as well as compliance to the environ-mental (EPA) and (OSHA) regula-tions. Violations of federal regulations,(EPA and OSHA) are not excusableand the daily fines and penalties areexpensive. The buck stops with you.The Owner Builder Exemption of theContractor’s Licensing Law allowsowners or lessees of property tobuild or improve residential, farm, industrial or commercial buildings orstructures on property for their ownuse, or for use by their grandparents, parents, siblings or children, and whodo not offer the buildings or struc-tures for sale or lease. When ownersare advised by individuals to sign theOwner Builder permit application, theowner can hire employees and con-tract directly with subcontractors toconstruct the improvements on theirproperty. The owner then takes on allthe responsibilities and the liabilities ofa general contractor.

Do not be confused: The ContractorLicensing Law HRS-444 is regulated byRICO. RICO assists the public and

licensees through education andthrough enforcement of the state’sprofessional licensing laws.

Building permits are regulated by theCity and County Department ofPlanning and Permitting, (DPP). Abuilding permit is not required forrepairs using similar or same materialsfor the purpose of maintenance andwhich are not more than $1,000 in val-uation in any 12-month period and donot affect any electrical or plumbinginstallations.

The Building Industry Association ofHawaii (BIA-Hawaii) has introducedSB-1077 to improve the ability ofRICO to investigate violations of theOwner Builder Exemptions and tooffer additional disclosures for ownerbuilders when they enter into agree-ments with licensed subcontractors.

Call or email your legislator to sup-port SB-1077. For more informationcontact me at [email protected].

Purchasing a photovoltaic (PV) sys-tem is a huge investment, but stateand federal tax credits are available

that can make it affordable. However, evenwith these tax benefits, other financial assis-tance may be needed.

Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union(HCFCU) recently introduced a new solarphotovoltaic loan special to make it easierfor homeowners to go green and save. Here is what makes HCFCU’s PV loan dif-ferent from the other PV loans out there:

• You’ll get the best price for your PV sys-tem. Other lenders who offer extremelylow or 0 percent loan rates often come ata cost to the solar contractor, who in turnpasses these costs on to the consumer byincreasing the overall cost of the PV sys-tem. With HCFCU’s PV loan, there are nohidden fees or mark-ups to both the con-sumer and solar contractor. Be sure to askfor “cash pricing.” You could easily savethousands of dollars.

• Work with the solar contractor of yourchoice. It is important to work with a solarcontractor you trust. HCFCU does notlimit your choices and will work with yoursolar contractor.

• Does not require the use of yourhome’s equity. HCFCU’s PV loan pro-gram is offered as an unsecured personalloan rather than a home equity line ofcredit. This allows you to free up the equi-ty in your home for other improvementsand uses.

• No payments due for the first six months. With no payments for six months, you can enjoythe benefits of your new PV system immediately.

• Quick responses and personal service. Asa credit union, HCFCU is dedicated to pro-viding the best service and knows theimportance of a fast turnaround.

For more information about this PV loanspecial or any of the other loan products, call HCFCU’s Consumer LoanDepartment at 536-3677, visit 681 S. KingSt. or go online at www.hccu.info.

HCFCU is federally insured by NCUA.Certain restrictions apply. Interest will con-tinue to accrue during the first six monthsof the loan. Please consult a tax advisor fortax credits and benefits.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Now that allthe excitement of the new year is over, I want tomove forward on some of the expansion andimprovement plans for my life (too many areasto mention) before the year slips away again. Doyou have any advice on how I can use my hometo support this? I’m also interested in any otherguidance you may have.

Ilove your enthusiasm in wanting to takeaction to improve your life. Our environ-ment can easily support changes that

involve growth or “upleveling.” Below aresome tips to help you prepare for the expan-sion you want to create and on the use ofmirrors to support your growth.

Locate areas of energy drain Any time you choose to make a change to

expand or grow in some way, take a look atwhere you are currently “losing” energy sothat you can “plug the leakage” and regainenergy and momentum to move in the direc-tion you want.

Whether the changes you want to makeinvolve eating healthier and exercising more, starting a new business, having more privatetime, being more productive, making moremoney, or finding a mate, you require energyto sustain the new expansion. If you aremaxed out in your life, creating the “biggerand better” life improvements will be difficult.

Start with the basicsWhen it comes to making your life bigger

and bolder, beginning with basics can meanthe difference between success and failure. For instance, without plugging your personalenergy leaks, you can become utterly drainedand abandon your plans.

Step 1: Identify your energy drains.Where are you uninspired in your life? Towhom can you not say no? Where are youtaking responsibility for others’ obligations? What are you wasting your time on? What

can you delegate? What can you let go of?

Step 2: After identifying your energydrains, determine workable solutions. Aslong as it returns more energy to you, nochange is too small to make. When actu-ally making the change is challenging foryou, keep reminding yourself of the biggerpicture — that you want to expand, andneed more energy to do that. In this step, commit to three things you will change,do them and ask a good friend to hold youaccountable.

Step 3: Now, begin setting up yourhome to support your expansion by usingstrategically placed mirrors!

The use of mirrorsHuman beings have been using mirrors for

protection or reflection for centuries. In fengshui, a mirror brings in energy of the elementof water (flow) and helps to expand the envi-

ronment while drawing in beneficial energy. Once you have successfully identified

where you need to make changes in your lifeand are committed to them, use the feng shuiguidelines below to create flow and supportand enhance your newly directed energy. Ifyou make no personal changes but add mir-rors, you will simply create more of the samebecause mirrors double the energy theyreflect. With that thought in mind, alwaysplace your mirrors so that they reflect some-thing positive.

• To visually expand the foyer, place a mirrorat the entrance, preferably on one of thesidewalls. When placing a mirror on a wallthat directly faces the front door, pay specialattention to what it reflects. It should reflectsomething pleasant, such as trees and flowers, not your messy neighbors across the street.

• Do you have space to hang a mirror in yourliving or dining area? If so, creating a visualexpansion of space here is excellent, especial-ly if it reflects the outdoors, bringing in unre-strained “growth energy.”

• If you have narrow and cramped spaces inyour home, such as tight corners and narrowpassageways, hang a mirror there to “open”the energy for expansion.

Note: Make sure the mirrors you hang donot reflect toilet doors (drain of energy), sharpedges and corners (cutting energy), bills(unwanted expenses), or old newspapers (thepast). Mirrors should reflect only things you wantto enhance.

Types of mirrors to put upUse your common sense to determine

the size of the mirror, and make sure it is nottoo big or too small for the wall. Framedmirrors and ornamental mirrors are greatchoices and allow you to pick a style thatmatches your basic décor. To keep the bed-room energy calmer and more conduciveto sleep, avoid adding mirrors in that envi-ronment and avoid cracked and tile mirrorsas they create distorted reflections.

From time to time check to see whereyou are losing your energy. Whenever you

feel tired or feel you are building resentment, put more attention on yourself and yourneeds.

When it comes to low-effort,big-impact changes, it’s hardto beat a fresh coat of paint.

For walls that feel drab, boring or outdat-ed, new paint makes a color statementand draws attention to architecturaldetails. Follow these paint tips to makean instant, dramatic impression:

• You can alter the dimensions of aspace by painting ceilings a slightly

lighter color than the walls.

• Create patterns and shapes usingpainter’s tape. Stripes, chevrons andombre effects are perfectly on-trend.

• Highlight architectural details by paint-ing interior doors and trim in a colorfulhue instead of traditional white.

Recently, we’ve gotten a bunch ofnew and consigned rugs intoCathy’s Marketplace, so I thought

I’d put you to the test. You know I love tostart decorating with an area rug becauseit can ground a space, set the direction forcolors and even the decorating style. Nowlet’s see how well you’ve been payingattention!

First, let’s describe the rugs:

• Champagne-colored fettuccine rug withlong, loose, silky strands. It’s your modern,uber-glam shag.• Traditional Persian wool-and-silkrug with a red base and a pattern ofcreams, golds, greens and browns.• Modern island-style rug with ageometric pattern of two-tone greensquares mimicking a lauhala-likeweave.• Scratchy, natural-fiber, sandy-col-ored sisal rug.

Now, let’s describe our living roomsetting. Our furniture arrangementhas two modern wood-and-leatherchairs in chocolate brown, a rectangularglass coffee table with an oil-rubbedbronze frame, and a clean-lined, fully uphol-stered beige sofa with wooden feet.

So, which area rug would work with thisgrouping?

The answer is all of them! Yes, althoughall of these rugs are different in style, someaccessories, throw pillows and other touch-es can make this furniture work on almostany rug.

Why would this grouping work with asilky champagne rug? Because both furni-ture and rug are modern in style. All thepieces are basic in nature, so the fettuccinerug can be the star.

But to give the grouping more of a glamfeel to match the rug, you can add in somebling. Crystal candlesticks on the coffee

table, a crystal floor lamp, furry throw pil-lows and glass and silver accents will makethis grouping shine and tie in perfectly withthis rug.

Next is the traditional Persian rug. Thisfurniture is not quite elaborate enough forthe rug, so to make it work, we need toheighten the formality. Try lots of throw pil-lows with saturated jewel colors. A beauti-ful throw would enhance the plush feel. With lighting fixtures, go for elaboratestyles and gold finishes.

And don’t forget some ornate, tradition-al accents for the coffee table: candlesticksmade of wood, painted metal or gold.Better yet, add some books under the can-dlesticks. And opt for heavier drapery.

Now, for the geometric pattern rug: Thesimple, clean lines of this furniture grouping

work perfectly with this rug. You don’t needmuch more. To stay within this style, youwant to keep your accessories fairly simple.Adding some throw pillows in deepergreens, browns or even grays would makethis setting seem subtly rich and dramatic.Clean-lined lighting fixtures and almost anydrapery panel with no fuss would work.

Finally, the sisal rug would be a casualgrounding piece for our furniture. Leatherand upholstery could be too heavy in visual

weight, so you’d want to bring in morecasual elements. How? With pillows andlamps that have linen or other naturalfibers, natural-looking window treat-ments, and no heavy throws or pieces.

The key here would be to bring inmore casual, earthy elements so thespace doesn’t feel too formal for the rug.Playful touches would work well.

So as you can see, you can make justabout anything work. I started with a fur-niture grouping that was pretty basic.Consider the style of your rug and thespace you’re trying to create, add fromthe ground up, and stay on your toes —you never know when I’ll quiz you again!

Setting your sights on cabinetry BY SARAH PACHECO

Before purchasing a new set of cabinetsfor your new kitchen or bathroom remod-eling project, there are some importantthings you should consider.

First, keep in mind that cabinets accountfor 40 to 50 percent of the total cost ofyour kitchen or bathroom remodel, so set-ting your total budget figure will be one ofthe first things you’ll need to do.

Are stock cabinets for you?Stock cabinets are the least expensive

option and are constructed in standardshapes and sizes; however, they are avail-able in a limited number of woods or fin-ishes and offer few style options beyondbasic drawers and cupboards.

If you plan on living in your home for onlya short time or are working with a tightbudget, stock cabinets are your best bet.But if this is going to be the kitchen or bathof your dreams, you should look for top-quality construction and materials foundwith semi-custom and custom cabinets.

Versatility of semi-customSemi-custom cabinets are factory-built

in standard sizes with many options for

storage, design and style. The high end ofcabinet construction is custom cabinets, which are constructed in either a work-room to designer specifications or on-sitein any style and finish you choose.

Semi-custom and custom cabinets pro-vide endless solutions to your storageneeds: pullout shelves for pots and pans; alazy Susan for spices; a wine rack; verticaldividers for trays and cookie sheets; evenan appliance garage or pullout bins are alljust some of the standard add-ons availablewhen ordering these higher-end cabinets.

And if your space is too narrow for acabinet and counter, a tall pantry closetprovides lots of space for pots and pans inthe kitchen or towels in the bath.

Make quality your first choice No matter what type of cabinet you

select, all cabinets should have solid frames, door and drawer fronts, reinforced corners

and closed backs, and the finish on thewood should be smooth.

Also, cabinet drawers and doors will beopened and closed many times throughoutthe day, so they should operate smoothlyand quietly each time.

Cabinets help establish a moodFinally, remember that the cabinets you

select will set the tone of your new kitchenor bathroom and play a major role in trans-forming your space.

Browse magazines and stores to get anidea for what suits you. Look for styles thatblend well with the architecture of yourhome as well as the interior design ofother rooms. But don’t get bogged downby all of these decisions.

Elite Design Group LLC offers free esti-mates and consultations for kitchen andbathroom remodeling projects, and its pro-fessional in-house kitchen designer canhelp you realize the perfect set of cabinetsfor your home.

Quality construction thattranslates to longevity Have you ever wondered why things breakdown so

quickly? Don’t think that by throwing a concretefoundation block down on the ground, you can

construct an addition that will be capable of withstandingthe movements, loads and stresses that are prevalent inHawaii’s soil conditions.

On top of it all, adobe soil is expanding and contracting ata rapid rate when rain falls on it. It is acting like a cellulosesponge. It’s no wonder so many homes in Hawaii have drywallcracks and shifting foundations because the basic steps wereignored at the beginning, and during, the construction process.

The existing dirt at the location of the addition may con-sist of silt or may have been backfilled with broken cementblocks and rocks. This is hardly an acceptable starting pointto building with quality. Footing may need to be excavated

below grade to a 2 foot by 2 foot by 3 foot depth andat least a foot of structural base installed and compact-ed to 90 percent density for a starting point. A 2 footby 2 foot concrete footing consisting of No. 4 rebar and3,000 psi concrete would be a good application as asecond step in the process. The point is that each build-ing site is different and a soil analysis is helpful to thestructural engineer in determining the correct design.

If you want the maintenance-freebenefits of a vinyl fence but areintimidated by the price tag,

you’re not alone. Many homeownersare initially surprised at the cost of avinyl fence, particularly since theinstallation costs are generally asmuch as the materials. Recent trendsshow that more and more homeown-ers are saving money by installing theirown vinyl fencing.

In the past few years, the markethas surged with DIY-friendly fencingproducts, making it much easier for ahomeowner to install a vinyl fencewithout the use of specialized equip-ment. In the past, heavy auguring andcement mixing equipment wasrequired to install a fence, making theproject much more intimidating, time

consuming and dirty. The modern way is to install a vinyl

fence post much like you would achain link fence post — by driving apipe anchor deep into the ground. After leveling the pipe, a vinyl post issleeved over the top. The result is alevel fence post installed without thelabor-intensive process of digging adeep hole and pouring concrete toset the post.

The no-dig way of installing vinylfence has been used in WesternCanada, where weather conditionsare particularly harsh, for almost 20years. In the past decade or so, it hasalso gained traction in the States asfencers and homeowners embracethe simpler installation method, par-ticularly after the method passed

wind load tests with-standing the class 1 hurri-cane category winds ofup to 75 mph.

Along with the labor-intensive and tediousinstallation method of dig-ging holes and pouringconcrete, fencing wasn’t previouslysold with installation guides and otherhelpful resources. Fortunately this haschanged with the DIY-friendly fencingproducts currently on the market.

In a day when consumers every-where are looking to save money, it’srefreshing to see that this is onehome project that just got a lot easierfor homeowners to tackle.

Refinishing bathtubs instead of replacing them is a rel-atively cost-effective bathroom makeover alterna-tive. The total estimated cost to replace a bathtub is

$3,000 or more, while refinishing bathtubs costs just a frac-tion of that price and you can save up to 75 percent of thereplacement cost.

Refinishing benefits homeowners, apartment complexes, hotels and other property managers by saving them moneyand time in comparison to replacements. With this option,Al’s Bathtub Refinishing can give a damaged and dirty bath-tub a brand-new look and color.

When refinishing, any bathtub chips and cracks arerepaired to give a new look and feel to the tub. You can alsochoose to refinish in any color. If you do not like the colorscheme of your bathroom, you can change the color of yourbathtub according to your choice.

Bathtubs come in various materials and age in differentways. Al’s Bathtub Refinishing is the expert in worn surfaceson bathtubs, tile, fiberglass showers, cultured marble andcountertops. If you’re on a tight budget, the company cando spot repairs on rusty, old tubs or cracked fiberglass tubs, even chip repairs on brand-new tubs. With 20 years ofexperience in Hawaii, Al’s Bathtub Refinishing can do it all.

Al’s processThe refinishing process involves removing all the old

caulking and thoroughly cleaning the surface to be refin-ished with a cleaning solution. Then etching solution is usedto maximize the bonding process. Next, the surface and sur-

rounding area are dried. Chips or any other imperfectionsthat the surface might have are filled. Next, the walls, floorsand any fixtures are masked off and the bathtub is solvent-wiped to remove any contaminates.

Next, a primer is applied to the surface to create the bestpossible surface for the topcoat. Finally, a high-gloss acrylicurethane topcoat is applied to provide a durable, long-last-ing finish to your surface. Al’s Bathtub Refinishing also offersStone-Flecks, which are imitation-stone finishes that come ina palette of colors for countertops and showers.

Please join us for our FREE seminar

WOOD AND STONE FLOORING 101Saturday, March 16, 2013 • 10AM to 11:30AM

Private Sale Only For Attendees!

Good Sunday Morning to you! This week I would like

to talk about proper subfl oor preparation and its

importance in achieving a

quality fl ooring installation.

As licensed wood installa-

tion professionals, we follow

the guidelines of the National

Wood Flooring Association

(NWFA). One of the fi rst things

you have to consider is level of

moisture in the subfl oor. The

ASTM standard calcium chlo-

ride test should be conducted

to determine the level of vapor

emission from concrete sub-

fl oors. The “pounds per 1000

sf” number will indicate what needs to be done next.

Another important issue to address before the fl oor

goes down is the fl atness of the fl oor. The NWFA

recommends that he fl oor be fl at to within 3/16” in

10 feet. We grind the highest spots and pour leveling

compound in the lowest.

All you need to knowabout roof warrantiesPermanent, aluminum Country

Manor Shakes (CMS) look great ona roof just like cedar does, but with-

out the drawbacks of wood. There’s also amanufacturer’s warranty covering 100 per-cent of the cost of material and labor (notprorated) for forty years or more. This is incase of the need for repairs because ofunlikely system failure in winds of 120 mph,Hawaii’s salty atmosphere, flaking paint orother problems that might arise. Countlessexamples of half-century old roofs aroundHawaii are a testament to aluminum’s suit-ability for use in our tropical marine envi-ronment.

Temporary, conventional asphalt compo-sition shingles haven’t changed much in thelast 20 years, and they usually need to bereplaced every 15 years. Ugly black streakswill appear in five years or less, but beware, the warranties are being extended. Whatmodes of failure will trigger repair orreplacement under the warranty, whatcosts will actually be covered by the manu-facturer and for what period of time? If thespecific roof failure is not covered in writ-ing, it is not covered.

Know your expectations before youactually buy a roof. One of the ways to dothis is to read the warranty. Most peoplethink in terms of catastrophic failure suchas severe windstorms, fire or baseball-sized hail. But most failures occur fromthings like foot traffic or algae growth.Further, inadequate ventilation can voidthe warranty and lead to premature gran-ule loss, blisters and curling.

It is also important to know that timeand simple exposure to sunlight, heat andmoisture are the primary reasons a con-ventional roof degrades and fails. This isbecause the base material, asphalt, is highlyflammable, but it’s combined with enoughlimestone quarry dust so that it won’tburn. The resulting material is hot, porousand will degrade quickly with exposure to

ultraviolet light. It is protected by adheringa layer of mineral granules to the surface, but it can absorb water from prolongedrain and develop surface blisters (not usu-ally a warranty defect) when sunlight sud-denly heats it up.

High-tensile aluminum, the base material

used for Country Manor Shakes, does notabsorb water and is not affected by heat, atmospheric pollutants or ultraviolet light.Your roof and home temperatures willstay cool with the infrared reflecting hI-R

Kynar 500 finish. To learn more about the CMS roof and

for a free, detailed estimate, call Fred Rehmof Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc. (ASR) at847-8885. ASR has re-roofed thousands ofhomes throughout Hawaii for the last 24years.
