SUMMARY

CHARACTERSJohn Peters (Cardiologist) , Alana Anderson (Nurse) , Gary Chapman (Chief Administrator)

STORY LINEPeters complained to Chapman that he has been sexually harassed by Anderson. Concerned about hospital decorum, Chapman met Anderson and asked her to not continue to exhibit show of affection for Peter.

Weeks later, Anderson resigned and later Chapmen, Peter and hospital were sued by Anderson for racial discrimination. Her claim was that Chapman had told her, “We don’t think it’s right for people of different races to pursue each other romantically at this hospital.”

Preliminary research had unrevealed several other incidents that supports the idea of racial discrimination at the hospital as widespread.

1. What do you think of the way Chapman handled the accusations from Peters in his conversation with Anderson? How would you have handled them?

I think that Chapman was both right and wrong about what he did. The right part was, Chapman met in private with Anderson to discuss the matter and let her know that Peters was uncomfortable with her showing affection for Peters.

What was wrong is that, Chapman should have ben more careful with the words he used against Anderson, it would have saved him from being accused.

Also that, Chapman should have done prior investigation on Peter’s complain on Anderson before meeting with her. In the event of Anderson really trying to show affection towards Peter. Furthermore, during the meeting Chapman should have brought someone else, probably a female and discussed on her behaviour and should have recorded this issue on their misconduct at workplace.

2. Do you think Peters had the basis for a sexual harassment claim against Anderson? Why or why not?

I think that peter had the basis for a sexual harassment claim against Anderson. This is because, he had the proof of unwholesome personal attraction with Valentines Day cards, affectionate personal notes, phone calls to Peter’s home.

3. What would you do now if you were Chapman to avoid further incidence of this type?

A number of steps could be taken to avoid further incidence of this type.

First, enforcement of policy of sexual harassment in the hospital and any incidents should not be tolerated.

Second, standard procedure for handling this type of problem. For example, creating SOP on how this misconduct is recorded, people involved and outcome from the meeting with the persons.

Third, instead of private meeting, we should arrange meeting with both parties with attendance of other relevant personnels and the outcome of the meeting should be put in writing to protect against any future claims by the parties involved.
