A robot is a mechanical system with polyarticulated parts. It is equipped with means of perception, reasoning and action capable of completely or partially substitute to humans in tasks of interacting with physical world.
Robots appeared in the world in early 60s and expanded strongly in all industrial operations

First generation of robots
Only points for gripping and releasing objects are defined.
They are primarily used in loading and unloading machines.
They are most often controlled by PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)

They have their degrees of freedom controlled in position and possibly in speed.
They are programmed by learning via consoles
For complex applications, they can be programmed by using CAD or textual languages .

These robots are constantly controlled by humans for applications where human can not be present (Master-Slave relationship)
Widely used in nuclear, space, the underwater environment, the fire situations, military robots ...
In the medical field, they are used for precision positioning and control of microdisplacements (impossible to guarantee by human hands). The robot in this case is controlled by the surgeon.

These robots are widely used out side of industrial manufacturing. It is the most growing sector of robots.
This family include humanoid robots, very popular in Japan.
Extremely used in agriculture (robots milking cows, robots fruit picking, robot sheep shearing, autonomous tractors guided by GPS …)
This family includes Intelligent transportation systems and in particular Automation of driving. This is extensively studied today and contributes to the evolution of robotic.

Robotics is critical to the competitiveness of the industrial sector (cost reduction and quality increase)
The two major robotic nations are the most technology exporting nations (Japan and Germany)
Global market of robots was 11 billions $ in 2005. It will reach 30 billions in 2015.
The unit price of robots is decreasing due to the technical improvements and the use of many new technologies. The cost was divided by 4 between 1990 and 2009
The main challenge of robotics is the perception of the environment. Each robot must locate, collect and model its environment and develop action planswhich enable it to achieve its mission.

High-end shirt makers use cotton because
it's the softest and most comfortable fabric
to wear. Sadly, cotton saturates easily and
dries slowly, resulting in awkward sweat
marks appearing.

Develop new weaving technology which has all the physical benefits
of regular cotton, without the drawback of displaying sweat
The new textile draws perspiration away from the skin, and via a
preset route, transports it across the shirt's inner surface. the
moisture is spread very finely over a large surface area, encouraging
it to dry quickly, keeping you feeling fresh throughout the day.
Meanwhile, the weave actively re-directs the perspiration away from
the outside of the shirt, preventing unsightly sweat marks from
appearing.
