High School Chinese 1A/1B Syllabus

I. Introductory Information:

Course Title: Chinese 1A/1 B high school CourseInstructor: Wan-Tzu Chen

II. Description of the course:

This introductory course in Chinese language provides the basic communication skills in the ModernStandard Chinese. This course is designed for the High school level students who have had no priorexperience to Chinese language and are interested in learning basic Chinese language as well as culture.Throughout the course, students will develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills; it alsohelps students to build up a solid foundation in preparation for more advanced Chinese language studies.

III. Exposition:

A. Competencies:

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

1. Pronounce the phonetic symbols in Chinese Pinyin;2. Distinguish the differences between the four tones in Chinese language;3. Compare and contrast the differences between American English and Chinese language

grammars;4. Acknowledge the basic strokes and the stroke-order in writing Chinese character;5. Recognize and write approximately 250 daily-used Chinese words; and6. Use simple daily conversations in Chinese language with colleagues.

B. Activities & Requirements:

The major activities for this course will include:

1. Drilling phonetic symbols and the four tones in Chinese language;2. Recording the pronunciation of the words that represents different phonetic symbols and

tones;3. Reading and presenting simple Chinese language such as asking time, menu, etc;4. Completing the personal profile form in Chinese language with the minimum help from a

partner;5. Reflecting on the differences between American English and Chinese language grammars;6. Greeting and responding to simple conversation in class with colleagues and instructor;7. Giving a three-minute presentation about yourself; and8. Performing role-play in four-member group.
