WelcomeI am pleased to present the 2014/15 portfolio for the HSC Leadership Centre.

The programme for the year ahead aims to ensure that staff at all levels have access to high quality management and leadership development.  The Leadership Centre is committed to providing products and support to deliver outstanding leadership in the HSC.  Our business focuses on three product areas:

Consultancy – support and products tailored to the needs of our clients Brochure programmes  ‐ including 15 new programmes for 2014/15 ICT – a wide range of programmes from basic IT skills, HRPTS and FPM support, through to the development of innovative IT solutions to 

support transformation and change.

In the past year we have worked with all organisations within HSC and a wide range of other organisations connected to our sector. For the 2014/15 year our team of professional and experienced consultants will continue to support leaders in the HSC through:

• Focusing on strategic planning for senior teams• Working with partners to deliver an innovative leadership programme at senior executive level• Supporting organisations to integrate the quality attributes framework• Developing a model of medical leadership that addresses need and spans undergraduate, junior doctor and consultant roles• Providing leadership and management master classes – our two big themes this year are clinical integration and engagement, and quality 

improvement and innovation• Growing the Knowledge Exchange [www.knowledge.hscni.net] as a central resource (see further information at the back of the Portfolio)• Developing innovative IT solutions to support transformation and change across the HSC• Continued focus on helping organisations achieve IIP status

An overview of Quality Improvement Approaches‐ Following Mid‐Staffordshire, Don Berwick’s review ‘A promise to learn – a commitment to act’ highlighted that the most important change is to foster the ability of staff to improve the processes in which they work.  This workshop will provide you with an overview of a number of key service improvement tools and techniques.

Appraisal for Doctors‐ This programme enables medical appraisers to carry out an effective appraisal.

Change Leader‐ This programme aims to develop individual competencies around a key set of change management skills and develop behaviours that lead to successful change management (ILM Level 3 Award in Management and Leadership).

Coaching – Developing Internal Coaches‐ This programme develops managers as effective internal coaches (ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring).

Coaching Skills for Managers‐ This programme assists first line and middle managers who wish to develop their coaching skills as one of their management tools (ILM Level 3 Award in Coaching).

Developing Leader – This programme is designed for individuals who would like to develop their competencies around a key set of leadership and management skills, and develop behaviours that lead to successful management in today’s diverse workforce.

Developing New Care Pathways‐ Services are being transformed. Teams are needing to re‐ design new Integrated Care Pathways with the implementation of Transforming your Care‐Vision to Action key proposals.  This programme is designed to help. 

Developing Your Potential‐ This programme provides participants with the knowledge and skills to further develop their competence in their existing post, and provides useful techniques for use when reflecting on career development.

Effective Leader ‐This programme is designed for middle managers who would like to develop their competencies in leading individuals and teams within a challenging work context (ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management).

Effective Minute Taking‐ This half day programme provides participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively organize and produce minutes of meetings.

Effective Presentation Skills‐ This programme will provide you with an overview of the skills required to deliver presentations effectively, and provide you with an opportunity to deliver a short presentation to the group.

Financial Guidance for Retirement‐ This programme informs participants about the financial implications of retirement.

Getting up to speed with procurement ‐ The aim of this one day programme is to providing an understanding of procurement guidelines (dates and details available online (www.leadership.hscni.net) in March).

How to Get that Job‐ This one‐day interactive programme will provide participants working within HSC with the necessary skills and knowledge to apply for new posts and prepare for interview.  

Innovative Leader‐This programme is designed for middle managers who would like to develop their competencies around managing change and innovation, and making presentations (ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management).

ITIL V3 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management‐ This entry‐level certification offers candidates a general awareness of the key elements of the ITIL V3 Service Lifecycle, including the linkages between Lifecycle stages, the processes used and their contribution to Service Management practices.

Managing Difficult Situations‐ The programme aims to equip participants with a range of techniques to respond effectively to other people in difficult situations.

Managing Effective Practice‐ This programme develops the competence and confidence of Social Work Team leaders, building on their existing management experience.

Managing for Success in ICT‐ This programme provides the opportunity for IT staff to fully explore and understand their role and to develop the necessary ‘non‐technical skills’ which will enable them to utilize their technical skills in the HSC business context (ILM level 5 Award in Management).

Mobilising Transformation through Effective Critical Conversations‐ This programme helps participants build confidence and acquire techniques which are helpful when carrying out “difficult” conversations.

Mobilising Transformation through Personal Resilience‐ This programme focuses on increasing inner strength and managing one’s own mental processes so as to remain resilient in the face of pressure and uncertainty.

Mobilising Transformation through Sharing the Vision for Change‐ This programme provides participants with an opportunity to consider the behaviours needed to shape organisational culture and help leaders become models for change.

Positive Employee Engagement‐ This programme provides participants with essential strategies and approaches to positively engage and foster creative participation for all those who deliver health and social care.  This will help to enable the continued provision of high quality services.

Post Grad. Diploma in Health & Social Care Management – The purpose of this programme is to educate and develop leaders and managers within Health & Social Care.  The programme aims to assist leaders and managers to plan, implement and sustain change in the transformation of services.

PRINCE2 Foundation Course‐ This programme provides participants with a better understanding of PRINCE2, and the opportunity to achieve formal recognition through the PRINCE2 Foundation Examination (multiple‐choice paper).

PRINCE2 Practitioner Course‐ This programme provides participants with a more in‐depth knowledge and understanding of PRINCE2, and the opportunity to achieve formal recognition through the PRINCE2 Practitioner Examination.

Process Mapping for Improvement‐ This programme aims to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of process mapping and how it can assist in process improvement.

Project Management Toolkit‐ The aim of this programme to provide participants with skills and practical techniques required to manage small scale projects in their workplace.  The programme comprises mainly theoretical session and a practical IT session.

Putting People First – A new one day regional programme to help develop the skills  of any member of staff who comes into contact with service users and carers, in particular those who are new to the service.

Records Management‐ This programme helps managers to acquire the skills to lead on Records Management in their organisation (ILM Level 5 Award in Management).

Redesigning Roles‐ The aim of this programme is to equip participants with tools and techniques to help them redesign roles to enhance the effectiveness of their team.

Thinking Differently‐ This is a practical team based approach to ‘root cause’ problem identification and application of proven thinking tools.  This programme helps participants  to  creatively challenge thinking and start the journey of ‘doing differently’.

Training for Trainers‐ This programme equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out an effective training and development role (City & Guilds Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector)

Transforming Leadership‐ This programme provides a unique opportunity for experienced senior leaders to adopt a ‘coach approach’ to leadership by gaining awareness of some successful leadership models.  

Understanding MBTI Type Dynamics‐ This programme helps participants to gain a deeper personal insight of own behaviour,  using Myers‐Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) dynamics.

Writing a Business Case‐ The ability to write a compelling business case is becoming increasing more important. This one day programme provides participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to write a business case in line with NIGEAE guidelines. 

Your Future Services ‐ Plan on a Page‐ Services are undergoing significant change. Teams are looking afresh at their core purpose, the services they deliver and how they deliver them.  This workshop provides managers with a practical approach to clarify and communicate the key elements of their future strategy.

Our deep insights into the challenges faced by organisations within and connected to health and social care make the Leadership Centre uniquely positioned to provide a range of specialist consultancy services to clients.  These include:

Coaching ‐ helping our clients to identify and develop ways to address issues through professional coaching programmes, and one to one coaching services as part of a person's on‐going professional development.  

HR support ‐ working closely with our clients' own HR and L&D professionals, we provide executive and graduate recruitment and assessment, capability needs analysis, delivery of learning strategies and plans, succession planning and specialist Investors in People support. 

Leadership Development ‐ we work with clients to co‐design and deliver programmes that help leaders to meet the requirements set out for them in the NHS Healthcare Leadership model.  Over the next year we are doing extensive work to support the development of medical leaders and senior executives.  Part of our offering also includes services to support medical appraisal and revalidation.  

ICT services ‐ our diverse ranges of IT and eBusiness services include systems development and support, website design, user training design and delivery, eLearning design and hosting, online questionnaire design and reporting, and programme and project management support.  

Team Development & Effectiveness ‐ we use a range of good practice techniques to assess team effectiveness and help our clients to identify and address the capability gaps that can unlock collaboration and better team performance.  Our specialist services also include mediation and professional conflict resolution. 

Improvement & Innovation ‐ our consultants have a broad range of skills, helping clients to deliver practical and sustainable change outcomes.  We specialise in service and performance reviews, the delivery of continuous improvement projects using Lean, the development of change, engagement and communication strategies and plans, and service reform action planning.  This year there will be a focus on supporting innovation, and building our client’s quality improvement capability based on the new Quality Attributes Framework.  

Facilitation ‐ our trained facilitators design and deliver innovative solutions that help groups to work more effectively; to collaborate and engage in fair, open and inclusive dialogue. We help groups to structure their thinking and find practical ways to identify and address issues, challenges and assumptions.

What is the purpose of the HSC Knowledge Exchange? Knowledge Exchange provides space (online, on phone and in person) for staff with a responsibility for delivering Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland to meet, discuss, debate and tackle current and emerging trends in health and social care.  It provides access to resources, good practice, leading thinking and up to date news and events across local, national and international systems.  

It is a place where staff can upload and showcase their work for the benefit of others, and ask questions and seek advice to help tackle issues they are facing.  It is somewhere that people can find current and relevant information quickly and easily, all in one place.  

One of the key ways to get involved in the Knowledge Exchange is through the website but there are other ways including events, study visits, webinars and live forums.

What are the benefits?There are a number of reasons for having an HSC Knowledge Exchange in Northern Ireland including:• To share good practice, experience and resources• To reduce duplication of effort and resource and avoid reinventing the wheel• To improve patient and client treatment and care• To enable staff to develop creative and innovative solutions through multi‐disciplinary partnerships• To engage in discussion around emerging and current trends and issues
