The Ministry of Health is working hard to

fulfil nutritional requirements of mothers and

children. Simultaneously, it is providing maternal

and child health care, implementing

immunization and vaccination campaigns, taking

disease control measures, carrying out sanitation

tasks and school health care programmes, and

giving health education talks on a wide scale.

These days, Nutritional Development Week

commemorative activities are ongoing township-

wise. The activities cover giving educative talks

about nutritional development, feeding Vitamin-

A pills to children aged between six months and

five years, distributing iron tablets to pregnant

women, and educative campaigns for widespread

consumption of iodized salt.

In developing countries, the majority of the

under-five mortalities are due to malnutrition.

Vitamin-A deficiency can cause blindness to and

weaken the antibody system of children.

Iodine deficiency can hinder physical and

mental development and cause goitre. The

majority of people in over 100 countries have

come under iodine deficiency owing to various

reasons.

Accordingly, parents have to feed hygienic

food, food rich in iron and iodine, and nutritional

food to children since their youth.

Everyone, therefore, should have a healthy

and balanced diet to be able to lead a healthy life,

free from diseases. Health staff, social

organizations and departments are to continue

to carry out nutritional development campaigns

in collaboration.

Enhance nutritionaldevelopment of mothersand children

Milk powder and healthDr Khin Maung Lwin

Now, there has been a new issue ofmelamine powder added to milk powder. So, the people should drink boilednatural milk, rather than milk powder.

The expression that means ‘a hero should nottarnish the gratitude of mother’s milk’ inspired meto write an article “Attributes of Mother’s Milk”. Atthat time, people all over the world were trying forhealth and survival of children, putting GOBI in thefore. The initials GOBI stand for “growth chart”,“oral rehydration”, “breast milk” and“immunization”. The method was launched in thecommunity health care programmes and savedmillions of children. Among the four methods,“breast milk” is the easiest and the most suitable onefor Myanmar people because it reflects the Myanmarpeople’s lifestyle.

In olden days, many mothers throughout theworld did not breastfeed their children due to theirwrong concept that breastfeeding was an outdatedtradition and it had adverse effects on their beauties.

At that time, a large number of brands of milkpowder were widely used for more than 30 years, overwhelming mother’s milk. An internationalorganization that is now inspiring global women tobreastfeed their children was well-known in theMyanmar society as an organization distributingmilk powder. In my youth, I used to take milkpowder drink. And I was in the habit of taking themixture of milk powder and sugar, putting it in myhand. In consequence, I often suffered diarrhea, then. My stomach was easily upset if I took milk andmilk powder. One of the causes was that I failed tokeep my hands clean. I noticed many cases in whichbabies were hospitalized, suffering diarrhea resultingfrom use of unclean feeding bottles and water.

Now, the issue of milk powder has reared itsugly head again. Milk powder contains melamine, which cause diseases and mortalities to children,

especially to under-twos. According to a news story, two children in Hong Kong had gall-stones in theirkidneys. Melamine is used to make household utensilssuch as plates, cup and spoons. I wonder why milkpowder contains it. Cattle farms and milk powdercompanies denied that they put melamine powder intheir products. However, the laboratory results saidthat melamine powder was found in milk powder. The problem is now rife across the world, not in acountry alone. So, the chemical is found more or lessin the foods made with milk powder such as yoghurt,ice-cream and ice-lolly.

There is a chemical reaction when boiling water, especially hot fried foods are put into a melamineplate or cup, and the process makes harmful agents.Parents are frightened when they learn that themelamine powder contained in milk goes to the

stomachs of children, it forms gall-stones in theirkidneys, and such children have difficulties withurinating, and some die of bad kidneys.

Parents feed excessive amount of milk powderdrink to their children to be strong and to grow fast, but that has been followed by undesirableconsequences, and parents of children and milkpowder producers are now in buzz. It has not beenclear yet whether melamine was added to milk ormilk powder on purpose. The research shows thatmore melamine is found in milk powder than in milk.Melamine constitutes one per cent of milk powder. The companies concerned have recalled their dairyproducts from the markets. The WHO is helpingaddress the issue.

Myanmar held Breastfeeding Weekcommemorative activities the whole previous August. If exclusive breastfeeding is carried out for a baby till

it is six months, and then it is fed additional foods ina systematic way, the process will reduce the numberof such causes. Mothers who have difficulties withproducing their breast milk are to be aware of thatpoint. It is difficult for parents to choose the mostsuitable nutritious cereal for their children due to thestrong lure of the advertisements. The best way inthat regard is to avoid such dairy products.

Once, many people did not consumetraditionally-made sweetened condensed milkbecause of their suspicion that the product containedformalin. When some European countries announcedthat milk and dairy products contained dioxyn,Myanmar launched educative programmes in it. Atthat time, educative talks were held for the people tobe aware of suspicious dioxyn contained in milk, milk powder, cheese, yoghurt and ice-cream. Now,there has been a new issue of melamine powderadded to milk powder. So, the people should drinkboiled natural milk, rather than milk powder.

That is a problem for housewives who makeyoghurt for the health of their family members. Ittakes too long to make fresh milk into yoghurtbecause fresh milk contains a lot of extra water. Themilk turns bad before it congeals in the process ofmaking yoghurt, so some milk powder is used tosolve the problem. If there is some sugar in milkpowder, the yoghurt is bad. Therefore, housewivesand patients who consume milk powder as additionalfood have to find out if milk powder they use carriesmelamine powder or not.

We should prepare and eat fresh natural foodsthat contain proportionate amounts of carbohydrates, protein, fibre and vitamins. Some medical expertshave pointed out that fruit and vegetables are plentifulin Myanmar, but the people consume them less thanthey should. In many countries, soya bean milk isreplaced with cow milk, but soya bean is notfashionable here. Such foods as bean curd cake, fermented soya bean, bean paste, and bean curd arewidely used. It has yet to produce sufficient amountof hygienic natural milk domestically. I would liketo say that a person can enjoy longevity withoutconsuming milk and milk powder.

ATLANTA, 25 Sept — If the FedEx Cup is supposedto be the Super Bowl of golf, then the PGA Tour shouldtake heart. The first two Super Bowls were just as dull.

The Tour Championship begins Thursday withoutthe tour’s dream of a half-dozen players or more com-ing down the stretch at East Lake with a chance tocapture the FedEx Cup and its $10 million prize.
