What’s Happening at MTHS

Believe it or not, spring is here and with the arrival of spring comes many important updates that I want to keep you all aware of:

Registration- We are finishing the process of selecting classes for the 2013-14 school year for all of our current grade 9-11 students as well as our incoming middle school students who will be new 9th graders next year. Sophomore-Junior College Night @ Meadowdale High School7pm - March 14th, 2013

Sophomores and juniors are invited to attend this informative evening. The keynote speaker will be Kevin Dyerly, VP of Enrollment at the University of Redlands, former Director of Admission at Whitman, and current president of PNACAC. Following the keynote address, we will offer over a dozen breakout sessions about various aspects of college admis-sions. Breakout sessions will include (but are not limited to):

• Applying to public universities in Washington state• Opportunities at community colleges • The ACT and SAT • Financing College • Writing the admission essay and personal statement • College for students with learning disabilities • Opportunities for the artistically talented student • Selective college admissions • The NCAA and the student athlete • College for first generation students • Opportunities in Canada

acaDemIc SUcceSS anD aSSIStance We want to remind parents and guardians that there is help available for your student! If your student encountered difficulty in his/her first semester courses, there is help available to make second semester a little easier. Several resources that we rec-ommend are:

1. MTHS Study Club: Mon.-Fri. from 2pm – 3pm in the Library.

2. PASS – Utilize this time on Wednesdays and Thursdays to get extra help from teachers, catch up on homework or missing assignments, or study for upcoming tests.

3. On-Line Help - One-to-one online tutors are available 1-10pm, seven days a week @ www.sno-isle.org. Click on the Homework Help link under “Research” on the left. Check with library to see in what other languages help is available. You will need a Sno-isle library card to access this help (which are avail-able online or at your local library).

4. National Honor Society – limited availability of tutors (See Julie Petterson – Counselor)

5. Study Partner – find a friend/”partner” in class to study with.

6. Keep up with Skyward and check on missing assignments and upcoming tests. This is a good weekly practice to do with your student together. Many teachers have links to their class websites now on Skyward as well, which can be another great resource.

regIStratIon Registration forms were turned in to advisory teachers on March 6th. We will be entering the course requests in the next few

days. Please log on to Skyward and review your child’s course requests between the week of March 25th and

April 8th. Please notify your child’s coun-selor if you find any errors in the course

requests. It is very important that we have accurate information, as we build our master

schedule around student course requests. Schedules can be viewed on Skyward beginning August 1st. Be on the lookout for a summer email from your MTHS counselors in June for more informa-tion.

2013-2014 rUnnIng Start Info 200+ juniors, sophomores, and their parents/guardians attended our Edmonds Community College Running Start informational meeting that was held at MTHS on Tuesday, February 26th. What a great turnout! If you were unable to make it to the meeting though, have no fear. The information we presented is on our Counseling Center website. See presentation and other Running Start Info here - http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/Page/8559 . Please feel free to make an appointment to see your counselor for more information about the program and information on how to get the ball rolling on the application process.

What is Running Start? In short, it allows juniors and seniors to take college-level courses for both high school and college credit. The Edmonds School District pays for the college tuition depending on how many classes the student takes both at the high school and college during a quarter. Students are respon-sible for the application fee, course fees (approximately $125/ quarter), and textbooks (approximately $150/quarter). Edmonds Community College begins to accept applications for Fall 2013 in mid-March.

graD reqUIrementS Graduation requirement reports are available through Skyward Family Access.

Seniors must have 19 credits after first semester to be on track for graduationJuniors must have 13 credits after first semesterSophomores should have at least 7.5 creditsFreshmen 2.5 credits

If your student is behind in credits, it is important to meet with their counselor and develop a plan of action. If summer courses were taken outside of the Edmonds School District, it is your responsibility to see that we have a transcript indicat-ing credits earned and that it is correctly reflected on your student’s current transcript.

fafSa It is not too late to fill out the FASFA! This federally funded student aid program becomes available each year on Jan-uary 1st and funds are given out to those who qualify on a finan-cial need basis. We recommend all students fill it out if they have any intention of attending a two or four year college next year, and it is thankfully a rather simple and quick process. Furthering one’s education is an excellent option for the future, particularly with the economy still in a recovery state. Consider post-high school education as an investment in your student’s quality of life!

In order to complete the FAFSA, you will need to go to the website below, apply for a PIN, have certain documents, and complete the form. Please beware of companies that promise to send college applications or fill out FAFSA forms for a fee – applying for Federal Student Aid is free and is done by completing the official FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov

If your child is planning on attending a community college next year, we recommend that they fill out the community college ap-plication NOW so that they can maximize their chances for a good financial aid package.

ScholarShIpS Be sure to complete the MTHS scholarship application. Students must have a completed application and se-nior resume on file in order for us to consider them for any schol-arships or awards that are chosen by our scholarship committee.

cap & gown You are still able to order your cap, gown, and announcements for graduation. You can order online at www.nationalachiever.com or call (800) 800-4083. We do have some gowns available to borrow if finances are tight. Please see coun-selor for more information. After graduation, please consider donating used caps/gowns to the Counseling Office so that we can help out next years’ seniors!

Sat &/or act? If your junior has taken the HSPE and/or End of Course (EOC) Exams but has not yet passed one or more of the tests, we highly recommend taking the SAT or ACT as an alternate assessment in order to have that graduation requirement met. Please talk to your counselor to receive a fee waiver for one of the tests and find out more information about this option. These tests are also required for 4-year university admission: two birds with one stone! Moreover, we encourage all students who are interested in entering a four year college or university to take both the SAT & ACT. Each test measures different aspects of learning and most colleges will accept the highest score from either test. You may find do much better on one test than the other.

We hope that you will attend the Sophomore-Junior College Night on March 14th at 7pm at Meadowdale High School. They will have local college representatives there with take home informa-tion, who will also be conducting break-out sessions about sev-eral topics including financial aid, application process, etc. It is a very worthwhile event! Please see previous page for full details.

Congratulations, you have made it through your first semester of high school! We hope you and your students are finding high school to be a successful and enjoyable experience. Please re-member that the counseling office is here to support you with any difficulties or obstacles you may encounter as you complete your first year and start thinking about next year. Also remember, if your student is struggling academically, we are still offering fresh-men study table during lunch. This is mandatory for students who are currently failing two or more classes, and is an opportunity for students to work on assignments and make-up work for those classes during lunch. The time is supervised, attendance is taken daily, and weekly reports are given regarding student progress.

It is not too late to get involved! We always encourage our fresh-man to get involved in at least one club, sport, or activity outside of school so that they will have a stronger connection with the smaller community here. On the other hand, at the high school level parents and guardians can feel left out of the connection. It does become difficult as your student gets older and becomes more independent. Regularly, we hear parents and guardians ask how they can become more involved in their student’s school. Mountlake Terrace has a wonderful PTSA that meets the fourth Monday of every month, and is a great way for parents to connect and meet with other adults in the school. It will give you the op-portunity to find out what’s going on and give input as to what you think might be helpful to our students and school. Please join us for our next meeting - date and time soon to be announced!

How does stress affect our learning?Written by Andrew Ritesma, counseling intern

John Medina is a developmental biologist who wrote a fascinating book entitled “Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School” (2008). One of the chapters addresses the issue of stress and its effects on the brain, particularly in regards to the process of learning.

Medina defines stress using three criteria: 1) there is an aroused bodily response to the situation; 2) the situation must be seen as un-pleasant and unwanted; and 3) the person must not feel in control of the stressful situation. When defined in this way, stress can then be measured in a laboratory setting.

In the short term, stress can boost our physical performance as when a grandmother lifts the front end of a car in order to save her grandchildren stuck under the wheels. Over the long term, however, surges in blood pressure scar our blood vessels and increase risk of heart attacks and strokes. Chronic stress kills off our white-blood cells, taking away our ability to resist infections. In the brain too, something fascinating takes place when we are under immense stress.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain where much of the processing of memories and emotions takes place. When we are highly stressed, a hormone is sent from our adrenal glands (right above our kidneys) to the hippocampus that can prevent new neurons to form and even kills cells that are already present. To this day, the chauffer driver of the late Princess Diana cannot remember a single detail of that fateful day, due to the intensity of stress he experienced then. Quite literally, severe stress causes brain damage in the area that allows us to focus, learn, remember, and yes, pass the SATs.

Is your family or student under a great deal of stress? We encourage you to speak to your school counselor about resources and ideas for how to bring down that stress level, so that your student is capable of accessing all the learning taking place at MTHS. We are here to support you!

About the 2013 HSPEThe 2013 High School Proficiency Exams will measure learning in Reading and Writing.

• Students in classes 2013 must pass the HSPE Reading and Writing exams or a state approved alternative in order to graduate.• Students in the classes of 2014 and 2015 must pass HSPE Reading, Writing and one end-of-course Math exam. Science is no longer required through the class of 2014. • Beginning with the class of 2016, students must pass HSPE Reading, Writing, end-of-course exams in Algebra, Geometry and Biology.• Current 9th graders will not be allowed to take the Spring 2013 HSPE.

About the HSPE and Running Start • Edmonds Community College (EdCC) has a policy that if a student informs the instructor that the student must take HSPE on a certain day and time that conflicts with the EdCC class, the instructor will give the student an excused absence. If the HSPE conflicts with an exam in the EdCC class, the instructor will provide a make-up exam student.

• Running Start students at other community colleges should check the policy at that school.

About the State Math Assessment (EOC) • The state assessment in Math will consist of two end- of-course exams – one for first year Algebra and one for Geometry. For information about Math graduation requirements, please refer to the Edmonds School District website: www.edmonds.wednet.edu/EOC

• For students who do not pass both end-of-course exams, there will continue to be a “core” Math state assessment for students to take to demonstrate Math proficiency.

About the State Science Assessment (EOC) • All students taking Biology will participate in an EOC exam. Students in the class of 2016 and beyond must pass a science exam in order to graduate.

About Students Not Passing Previous Tests• The District will be sending letters to all juniors and seniors who have not yet met standard in reading or writing, reminding them that they need to take the HSPE in the appropriate subject. Be looking for this mailing!

What is HSPE?

=== Important Messages about the 2013 High School HSPE and EOC exams ===

The High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE) are a series of tests that help make sure our students learn the foundational skills and knowledge that educators, parents and community leaders say are important to their success in life.

The HSPE serves two purposes. It helps us find out how each student is doing and how each school is doing. Schools pay attention to HSPE results. They use them to improve teaching and to do a better job of meeting every student’s academic needs.

The Education Reform Law passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1993 required the state to create a set of common learning standards for grades K-10. The law also called for a testing system that measured student learning of those standards. Washington fourth-graders started taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in 1997. Students are now tested each spring in grades 3-8 and 10 in reading and math. Students also are tested in writing in grades 4, 7 and 10 and science in grades 5, 8 and 10.

In 2004, the state Legislature set a date for the state to implement the third piece of its education reform efforts: student accountability. Starting with the class of 2008, all students must show they have a certain level of skill in reading, writing and math (and, soon, science) to be eligible to graduate. One of four ways students statewide must do this is by passing the HSPE or a state-approved alternative. Students must continue taking the HSPE even while attempting alternatives. Passing one of the options available under the Washington Alternate Assessment System (WAAS) is an option for students receiving special education services.

Unlike most standardized tests, which are all multiple choice, the HSPE is a mix of multiple-choice and short-answer. The HSPE is used to meet testing requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. HSPE scores determine whether a school, a district or the state has met Adequate Yearly Progress.

great newS for the carpentry program! On January 31st, the Carpentry Progam received the Roof Truss Package - this is a full month earlier than last year. This means that the students have really done a great job with getting the foundation poured and the floor and walls framed to propel the project ahead to where the roof should be on before the end of February. So by the time this article comes out the house will look like a house, minus the finishing touches of siding, paint and such. But what a great accomplishment for High School Students to build an actual house from the ground up that someone from the community will soon be living in.

Congratulations MTHS Boy’s Basketball Team!

Celebrating our Students

After a difficult opening round loss to eventual third place finisher Lincoln in the first round game Thursday night, the Mountlake Terrace boy basketball team showed grit and determination in concluding their trip to Tacoma with a victory in the 4th - 6th place game Saturday morning against Seattle Prep. Bouncing back from their opening game disappointment, the Hawks took care of University Friday afternoon by the score of 59-56 to reach the Saturday morning game against Seattle Prep.

After a slow start found the Hawks trailing 23-19 at halftime, strong third and fourth quarters propelled them to victory and the fourth place finish in the 2013 Hardwood Classic. Marquis Armstead and Blake Fernandez paced the Hawks with 11 points in the final game, with Loren Lacasse chipping in 10.

The entire Edmonds School District community wishes to congratulate the entire basketball team for their fantastic season!
