Japanese gardens and Japanese arts are competing with each other in this museum. The

“Journal of Japanese Gardens,” an American-Japanese garden magazine, selected this garden

as the best in Japan for three consecutive years in the “Japanese garden ranking, 2005.” Here

you can enjoy Japanese gardens in the four seasons. The windows of the hall become the

frames of live pictures. Works of masters who helped create Japan’s modern art world, includ-

The festival starts in the evening in the grounds of Shinzan

shrine. Namahage (ogres) drums and dancing help create

excitement. The climax is the Namahage descending down the

hill, cloaked by nightfall, their yells echoing into the hills. A

line of fifteen torch-carrying namahage emerge from the cedar

forests. The drama is very realistic with the light of flames

fluttering in the wind.

A very well-known event in Tokyo where people

pray for good health, protection from evil, and good

luck for the year. On a special stage, various events

take place including rice cake making, “Devil Q

&A” held between priests, children and “devils,”

and the scattering of parched beans by men and

women who were born in the year with the same

Chinese zodiac sign as the current year, sumo

wrestlers and entertainers. Strong voices calling,

“Devils out, Good luck in” echo around the grounds.

Custom Cars — the ‘one and only’ car of their type in the world. Once these

cars were only for a limited number of ardent fans, but now that peoples’

values are diversifying, the ‘world of one car’ that meets these peoples’ needs

Jazz was born in America, spread across the world, and is now very

popular in Japan. Tokyo’s Shinjuku district in particular, which has

always been a center of creative culture comprised of theaters, music, lit-

erature and art, has played an important role in developing “Japanese

Jazz.” The “Shinjuku PIT INN” opened in this entertainment-filled

atmosphere in 1965 and always produced top level musicians by provid-

ing a spot to play jazz. A Jazz Festival is being held to commemorate the

40th anniversary of the “Shinjuku PIT INN.” Famous Japanese artists

including WATANABE Sadao and HINO Terumasa will be appearing.

At this festival, you will experience the crossing of cultures and the

coexistence of the many countries in the world. It is scheduled to be

held on the 3rd floor of the international conference room in the

Makuhari Messe hall on January 29 (10:00 ~ 16:00). More than 30

international exchange and international cooperation groups, mainly

based in Chiba, will put on stage performances accompanied by eth-

nic music instruments and dancing including those from Indonesia

and South America. Many fun things are also prepared for visitors,

who can enjoy a bazaar, calligraphy, futomaki sushi and a simple

helicopter-like bamboo toy. Admission is free.

2006 is the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese calendar.

Dogs are known to be the most loyal animals to human beings,

and in Japan, there is a famous dog that showed this quality

until the day it died. The dog’s name was “Hachi” (1923~1935) and

is generally called “Chuuken Hachi-kou” (loyal dog Hachi). A statue

of Hachi sits in front of JR Shibuya station in Tokyo, where it is most

commonly used as a meeting spot.

Hachi was a male dog and was born in 1923 in Akita. Soon after

his birth, he was transferred to Tokyo to be taken care of by Doctor

UENO Eizaburo, of the agricultural department of Imperial

University (the present day Tokyo University), who lived in a large

house near Shibuya station. Dr. Ueno did not have any children, but

there were already two dogs; 8-year-old John and 7-year-old Esu.

John, a pointer dog, took care of little Hachi. The doctor loved Hachi,

Hachi, John and Esu were used to seeing their master off at

Shibuya station in the mornings and waiting for him at the station in

the evenings, and also walking the long distance with him to the agri-

cultural department gate. The doctor always gave them biscuits and

patted them when they parted.

On May 21st, 1925, Hachi walked alone to the agricultural depart-

ment gate in the evening and waited for the doctor. However, the

doctor did not appear, even after it got dark. That day, the doctor had

suddenly passed away after a professors meeting. He had only been

keeping Hachi for 17 months. After returning home without his mas-

ter, Hachi went into the storeroom where the doctor’s remaining pos-

sessions were kept and ate nothing for three days.

A bronze statue of Hachi was built in 1934 and Hachi was invited

to the unveiling ceremony. The Ministry of Education adopted

Hachi’s tale into the second grade elementary school textbook, titled

“Don’t forget an obligation.” It also became a movie and a story

book. In this way, his admirable tale soaked into the hearts of the

Japanese. In 1935 Hachi died, much to the peoples’ regret.

At the final service of the funeral, many people rushed to Hachi’s

body and patted it or offered chocolates and other things. Hachi’s

body was covered by flower rings brought by boys and girls who had

become acquainted with Hachi. His body was buried near Dr. Ueno’s

tomb in Aoyama cemetery. His skin was stuffed and is preserved at

On the 25th, the fourth day

after the doctor’s death, when

the wake was taking place,

Hachi, together with John and

Esu, animals that did not under-

stand the meaning of death,

went to Shibuya station to meet

their master. This continued.

by an acquaintance living in Sangenjaya near Shibuya. After a while

Admirable tale described in school textbookHachi was harassed by the station clerks and stall keepers for being

an obstacle. On the other hand, many people thought highly of the

admirable Hachi always coming to meet his (dead) master, and in

1932 the story was introduced in a newspaper. Hachi’s loyalty

became known to many people and the attitude of the station clerks

and stall attendants suddenly changed to one of love. The story

became so popular that “Hachi senbei (rice cracker),” “Hachi choco-

late” and other products began to be sold around Shibuya station.

From this period, Hachi began to be called “Hachi-kou.” “Kou”

Japanese salary payment system, salaries are usually paid 1~2 weeks

The following year, they launched a “staff service job

information service,” and in 2000 they opened the

“HatarakoNet” portal website, where users can select

staff service agents, the first service of its kind in the job

advertisement business world. Their sky-rocketing

growth continued and they listed on the Mothers section

of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. As TOMITA Hideki,

president of DIP forecast, DIP’s business was crowned

in a very short time.

very difficult times, he says, “They may have lost loved ones, gone

broke, or maybe suffered major illnesses — and most likely they still

have big problems! But they are happy because at some point they

“People who struggle through life and are mostly

native option is to say, ‘I prefer my planes to arrive on time but if

‘My preference is that people don’t tell lies but I understand that

some people do tell lies, and if some people do tell lies, I accept that

end of things. “Problems are often a beginning and a catalyst towards

important to live in the present,” he says. “So often we are drawn into

Another principle he follows is: There is only one way to enjoy

whatever you do — do it the best you can! “Have a personal philoso-

phy that encourages you to do whatever you are doing as best as you

can.”

Problem solving: break goals down into littlepieces

One of the key lessons Andrew teaches is the idea of taking one

bite at a time. “Whatever it is you are doing, break it up into little

pieces. Successful people are not brilliant; but they have a plan and a

system to accomplish their goals.”

To illustrate this concept, he describes how he wrote

one page of “Follow your Heart” each day until he had

finished it. Another example of dividing goals into lit-

tle pieces is related to his seminars, some of which he

delivers in Mandarin. To do this he divides his stan-

dard seminar of 520 sentences and learns 2 sentences a

day. “It looks like a long project, but it is only 2 sen-

tences a day. It is important just to divide it up and say

‘this all I have to do today. I don’t have to do anything

spectacular, but I have to do something to accomplish

my goals.’ ”

Happiness Tip 2: LOOK FOR GOOD THINGS!Have you noticed that when we look for good things in situations —

or people — we find them. When we look for bad things, we also find

them.

So I say, “I’ll never forgive you!” Who suffers? Not you! I will get

the knot in my stomach.｠ I will lose the sleep. While you are proba-

bly out partying!

dolls are displayed and demonstrated.

Australian-born Roxanne GWYN-KABAYAMA first came

to Japan from Australia in 1999 as an exchange student

with the Rotary Exchange program. “I really enjoyed my

experience, and decided that I wanted to come back and work in

Japan to get a different perspective of the country.” With that in

mind, she readily agreed to accompany her husband (then boyfriend)

Shigeo back to Japan after his student visa to Australia expired.

“Shigeo is from a small island near Okinawa where most men

believe that women are there to wash the dishes, make dinner and

pour ocha (tea) after dinner, as well as work in the fields side by side

with their husbands every day.” says Roxanne. “This goes hand in

hand with a culture that really encourages drinking, and doing noth-

ing more than going out to ‘snack

bars’ for entertainment with your

mates.”

“We held our wedding ceremony in

Australia in 2000 and 17 Japanese flew

over to be there with us,” she says. “I am

from a small country town 700 km’s west of Sydney, so we hired a

bus and had an 11-hour tour-guided drive for them from the airport

to my hometown the day before the wedding. We arranged a farm

tour the morning of the wedding, and then got a local to bring whips

and hats to the pub for the guests at lunchtime. We had a bush dance

and the Japanese crowd really loved it — they were all doing it in

their kimono!” says Roxanne.

After their marriage, many things happened to them. Roxanne

explains, “When we first moved to Nagoya Shige decided that he

would start a business instead of getting another salary man job. At

first we were both excited by the concept, however as time went by it

became apparent that Shige needed more direction, and working on

his own was proving to be very difficult. Regardless of the fact that I

have business, marketing and sales experience, Shige would not take

any advice from me. It was very frustrating as I could see things

going from bad to worse, but he would not let me help him in any

way. I understand now that he was just too consumed with the fear of

failure that everything that I said was taken as criticism. This was a

vicious circle that didn’t end until Shige was able to start working

again.”

The unexpected events continued. “Shige started working when

we found out that I was pregnant in preparation for the time that I

would not be able to work after my baby was born,” Roxanne says.

“Unfortunately, he was not very happy in the job, and did not get on

with his boss at all. Although we had told his manager well in

advance that Shige was going to be at the birth, when Shige phoned

at 6am on the morning that our son was born to tell his boss that he

couldn’t come to work that day, he was fired!!” says Roxanne.

“Another problem was the snack bars.

Because we do not have such a thing in our cul-

ture, it was difficult for me to understand why a

man would want to go and spend so much

money just to ‘talk’ with a woman. I was sure

that there was more in it than that, however I went to the snack bars

with Shige and his friends many times and now I understand that

they are less of a threat than I thought.”

Both care for partners’ fathersFor international couples, the relationship with their partner’s par-

ents is very important. Roxanne explains about Shigeo parents, “His

mother was truly lovely, and throughout our stay was always looking

out for me and ensuring that there was plenty for me to eat and drink.

She never once expected that I help or do anything, and appreciated

everything that I did immensely. I wasn’t really sure how to relate to

Shige’s father, He was somewhat stand offish in regard to me, but

not in a bad way, rather it just felt like we didn’t really have a lot to

talk about, and if we did we probably wouldn’t be able to understand

each other, so it was better just to sit and smile!”

When she went back to Shigeo’s island recently she took the

opportunity to ask Shige’s mother to return her wedding photo

album. “She seemed to be reluc-

tant to return it, and as we talked

more she explained to me that

Shige’s father was very proud to

have me as a daughter-in-law,

and that whenever he had visi-

tors over he would pull out the

wedding album and ‘show off’

his daughter-in-law with satis-

faction,” says Roxanne.

Shigeo first met Roxanne’s parents when they went back to her

hometown. “I was quite wary of her father because when she had

told him about my previous job, which was working for my uncle

who had his own construction company, her father’s only comments

were ‘— so he digs holes!’ However, when we actually met things

weren’t quite so bad,” says Shigeo. “Although her mother told her

that she didn’t want her to live overseas, I felt welcomed, and her

father actually gave me a bow tie to wear to the Ball!” Roxanne says,

“My mother was doing the right thing and made sure that he had

enough to eat. This is definitely universal.”

What challenges did Roxanne have to face in Japan? “I

have had to become accustomed to NOT showing affection in

public, which in itself is not such a hard thing to get used to,

but the really difficult thing for me was getting used to being

with a man who does not publicly acknowledge his affection

for me. Being a gaijin woman in Japan, it is certainly not easy

to keep your femininity alive ... the clothes and shoes are

always too small, too tight, too cute, the girls around you are

almost always shoulder height, and you are able to look men

in the eye ... so for women here I think it is difficult to remain

‘normal’ in the feminine sense.”

She offers advice for those who want to marry a foreign partner:

“There are many people who are willing to pre-judge international

marriage success rates, however I really do think that everything

depends on the effort that the partners are willing to put into their

relationships,” Roxanne says. “One thing that may affect communi-

cation in an international relationship is of course language. My

advice to any partner in a mixed relationship is to learn your part-

ner’s language — not only for communication between the both of

you, but for the sanity of your partner, and also for if in the future

you have children who prefer to

speak your partner’s language.”

Why did you apply for the Rotary program?“I wanted to be a Peace Fellow because I feel I can make a differ-

“Although I can, and have, volunteered in India to build a house for

knowledge and solving problems with others is much more valuable

than my labor. It is for this reason I wish to be a diplomat and an aca-

demic.”

“Being in Tokyo, I have come to know many very interesting peo-

ple, and these people have shared many fascinating ideas with me.

But the most interesting lesson has most certainly been this: we must

engage others in our daily lives, even if we do not agree with them. It

is only through engagement, respect, and honest effort at empathy

that we can deal with others in a constructive manner in order to

solve problems.”

“If someone feels that they too can make peace a part of their lives,

The closing tap dance scene in which farmers dance with joy

at a festival, shown in the re-make of the movie “ZATO-

ICHI” by widely known director KITANO Takeshi (Best

Director Award at Venice International Film Festival, 2003), must

have left a vivid impression on the world of movie fans. Under his

new and surprising direction, the image of ZATOICHI changed quite

dramatically from the popular original movie series starring KATSU

Shintaro, and the scene was the highlight of ZATOICHI.

It was THE STRiPES, a four-per-

son tap dance unit with leader HIDE-

BOH, RON × Ⅱ , SUJI. and

NORIYASU, that danced in the center in the last scene. With their

precision tapping rhythm and a performance that goes beyond the

limits of conventional tap dancing, THE STRiPES have a reputation

not only in Japan, but also around the world. Last year, they were

invited to represent Asia at the World Tap Dance Festival held in

Chicago, USA.

Born to be a tap dancerHIDEBOH was born to the father

of an OSK dance choreographer and

the mother of an SKD dancer. As his

parents opened a tap dance studio,

HIDEBOH started to learn dance from

his parents from the age of 6 and began

teaching at age 16. For part-time work

during his junior high school years, he

became a camera rehearsal substitute for

SHIBUGAKITAI, at the time the most

popular idol group in Japan. “I didn’t

mind working in the show biz world, but

I thought that if I would work around the

world, my specialty should be tap

dance,” he says. Hence, HIDEBOH

decided his path at a very young age.

Two common styles of tap dance are the Broadway style featured

in musicals, and Rhythm tap, which is more creative and uses more

ad lib dance steps. HIDEBOH practices the latter. The root of tap

dance is the clock dance of the African-Americans. It was developed

from the idea that “Though our hands were chained as slaves, our feet

can still move.”

HIDEBOH had been living in the USA for about 18 months to

improve his skills. Since he has been influenced by his favorite talent

Sammy DAVIS Jr., he had tanned skin and his hair was in a style

commonly worn by black persons.’ “An American tap dancer once

asked me, ‘Who are you?’ and said that I should show some Asian

taste as a Japanese.” After returning to Japan, he asked himself,

“Who am I?” It helped him to define his dance style.

“NORIYASU, a musician, became the first member of THE

STRiPES. He isn’t like an ordinary musician, but that’s why he is

attractive. RON×Ⅱ and SUJI. used to be my students,” HIDEBOH

said about his members. They took their name “THE STRiPES” from

the American flag “Stars & Stripes,” to show respect for the USA,

the birthplace of tap dancing.

I learn many things from director Kitano Without a doubt, it was ZATOICHI that made THE STRiPES

famous, and their opportunity to participate in the movie occurred

when HIDEBOH appeared in the TV program “Takeshi’s Anyone

can be a Picasso.” For your (non-Japanese) information, director

Kitano is also the most famous talent (comedian) in other fields

besides movies, in which he uses the name “Beat Takeshi.” He also

acts as MC for several TV programs. HIDEBOH began to teach

Takeshi tap dancing after appearing on Takeshi’s TV program 5

years ago.

Talking about Takeshi, HIDEBOH says, “He wanted to learn tap

dancing from the beginning again. It seems not just for his work, but

because he had a special interest. He has a view that it is an obliga-

tion for entertainers to master entertaining skills. So he has a very

enthusiastic attitude. I am teaching him at his home or at studios

before his programs start. I heard he practices for two hours a day. He

calls me “teacher.” As this is too much I asked him to call me

“HIDEBOH” but he refused to. Takeshi is surprisingly shy, but really

clever and his imagination is amazing. It is me who is learning many

things from him.”

New possibility for tap danceThe members of THE STRiPES teach tap dancing even now when-

ever they have time. The majority of tap dance students are in their

20s and 30s, and 90% are women. “Culture comes from fashion. So

without thinking that tap dancing is difficult, we have to expose it to

the public showing it simply and easily,” says HIDEBOH, who seem-

ingly has more passion than anybody to expand the dance market as

the leader of tap dancing.

Last November, the group’s DVD containing footage of their live

concert held at the Shinagawa Prince hotel in June 2005 was released.

By watching it, you will feel HIDEBOH’s enthusiastic

attitude for tap dancing. The video portrays not only

the groups’ superb skills, but also various fun stories.

Among these is a hilarious story about bus passengers

and the driver. You will be touched and feel a fresh

impression from the members who finish their 100

minute stage performance with so much sweat that it

looks like they have just played a full-on football game.

It is not an exaggeration to say that they are showing

new possibilities for tap dancing, which sometimes takes

sold at convenience stores, train station stands and

book stores, there are many pages featuring young

women wearing swimming suits or posing completely

nude. They are called “gravia idols,” and are contributing

to sales of magazines.

Yuko’s bust size was quite normal until she entered senior high

school, and it suddenly developed when she was in second grade.

“My mother’s size is a C-cup, so it is not due to genes. It may have

come from my favorite drink, milk. I used to drink two packs of milk

a day,” she says. However, she once had an inferiority complex due

to the size of her bust.

amuse men. Yuko seems to enjoy their

gazes now, but says, “My blouses’

buttons do not reach their holes. And

there are no bras my size among Japanese products. In crowded

places my bust hits people, and they become an obstacle when I play

the piano. Except for my work, they have no advantages.”
