The pandemic seems to haveput paid to the Big FatIndian Wedding. Accord-ing to a 2017 KPMG report, the Indian wedding indus-

try was estimated to be worth $40-50 bil-lion (around ₹3-3.7 trillion), growingannually at 25-30%. It was deemed almostrecession-proof—until covid-19 hit.

It has taken its toll on couture, whichhas constituted a big part of bridal wear fordecades, given not just the cultural influ-ences but the fact that bridal and occa-sion-wear tend to be bespoke.

Increasingly, however, big weddingsand social gatherings are being replacedby intimate family occasions, even Zoomweddings. All this is changing the waybrides dress. The simpler, traditional lookis in. And masks are now sought after.

Designer Tarun Tahiliani, who steppedinto his 25th year in the Indian fashionindustry in 2019, says: “At the customerend, no one is in the mood to buy newthings, except for the immediate family ofthe bride and groom.”

Designer Anita Dongre, who reopenedher stores in India as well as New Yorkrecently, believes it’s too early to say whatwill change. “Most of the brides who hadappointments with us postponed theirweddings since they have always dreamtof it being big. The ones who went aheadwith it resigned themselves to simpleweddings at home.”

With people hardly stepping out, Tahi-liani says “dressing up, especially in ornateand very extravagant Indian clothes, is thefarthest thing on their minds”.

THE SIMPLER LOOK

What designers do seem reasonably sureof is that the trend of lightweight and sim-pler wedding lehngas will continue—

brides would prefer to be fuss-free andcomfortable. Tahiliani says: “People areaware of the economic and social destruc-tion around them and this is really not theright time for people to be going over thetop. Rather, I think it is going to push usinto a more circumspect way of doingthings.”

Dongre has always prided herself on thefact that her fashion house brought in thetrend of lightweight wedding lehngas. “Idon’t see that aesthetic changing for us,”she says.

Designer Palak Shah of the clothinglabel Ekaya Banaras says, “Along withensembles that can be used durably andtrans-seasonally, brides won’t buy any-thing that makes too niche a statement.”Bridal wear at the moment is more aboutretaining a piece’s value in terms ofdesign, and classic styles preserve thatquality.

KEEPING IT TRADITIONAL

Bridal wear trends, however, will matter, says Shah. “Even as brides get marriednow, they want to be in sync with the cur-rent trends.”

The enquiries Dongre is getting atpresent are still for a traditional aes-thetic—lehngas with embroidery orembellishments. “It’s because home wed-

dings are usually just one ceremony thatbrides want to be traditional in theirapproach. It’s sacred for them,” she says.

Tahiliani says the approach to bridalwear will be more about the bride’s per-spective of what makes her comfortable.“Be it the use of coloured crystals insteadof mukaish’s silver-and-gold, introducingfine resham threadwork to achieve theclassic look of kashida (which in its origi-nal form can be double the weight) oradopting digital printing on the fabrics tobring the perfect colour gradient for anombre lehnga—it’s incredible what tech-niques of modern techniques canachieve.”

Shah, who specializes in textiles andweaves, says: “I see a lot of classic patternscoming through. You can’t go wrong witha jaal sari, colour combinations of red andpink. Brides will veer towards timelesschoices rather than being experimental.”

MASKS MATTER

Not surprisingly, matching masks—in col-our and embroidery—with bridal ensem-bles are now popular.

Dongre says she has begun gettingrequests for masks as part of the trousseau.“I am staying away from making embroid-ered ones but just offering them in thesame colour, not selling. For me, the maskis still more utilitarian and a grimreminder of our times. One needs to becognizant of that.” Shah agrees: “You can’treally breathe in a heavily embroideredmask. It’s great for pictures but it isn’t

practical at all.”Tahiliani has a different take: “Let’s face

it—no one is wearing a mask because theylook good. Self-preservation and civicresponsibility towards others’ safety hasmade them a fact of daily life. In light ofthis, I think it is highly likely that a brideand groom would be wearing masks ontheir wedding day. Since this is a specialday for the couple and they would bedressed in all their finery, I see absolutelyno issue with it if they choose to have theirmasks customized and adorned to suittheir wedding day ensembles.”

THE COVID-19 BRIDEBridal-wear trends through the pandemic show a new affinity for a simpler, traditional look—and matching masks

The trend of lightweight and simpler wedding ‘lehngas’

will continue—brides would prefer to be fuss-free

and comfortable
