Deforestation: the destruction of an ecosystem

You are going to research and write a report on deforestation. You need to work alone to decide what is going to go into your report. You will need to collect information about the causes and effects of deforestation.

The report should include two sections but you should also have an introduction that explains what is happening and a conclusion that sums up your findings and you own opinion.

Section 1. Why is the rain forest being cut down?

In this section you need to explain what the different pressures are on the rainforest. Who is cutting it down or allowing it to be cut down and why?

Section 2. What are the effects of deforestation?

In this section you need to explain how cutting down the rainforest is affecting the local area where the trees are cut down, the people of the area like the Tikuna people, the rest of Brazil and the world climate.

4. The student shows some understanding of deforestation. They have used some of the resources provided to complete their report. There are two clear sections and the content of each section is appropriate if a little simple.

5. Students show good understanding of the causes and the effects of deforestation. They will have drawn on a variety of sources. Each section is clearly laid out using graphs and images to help explain their an appropriate method of presentation and sentences clearly show an ability to describe and explain. Geographical vocabulary is used well.

6. A very good report showing a very clear understanding of the causes and effects of deforestation. Most of the sources will have been used along with some they may have found themselves. There will be good use of key terms as well as images and graphs to make their points. The report will include complex sentences that describe and explain in great detail.

7. At this level students are writing a cohesive report that shows a very clear understanding of cause and effect and that they understand that people’s lives and the environment in one place are affected by actions and events in another (e.g. they explain the global effects of deforestation.) There is evidence of additional research undertaken by the student. This would be the equivalent of a good GCSE standard.

8. An exceptional report that fulfils all the criteria for level 7 and has additional merit.
