Access Systems – Performance

• How many persons in the complexe(s) ?

• Data available by LHC point. Useful for

• Safety issues (evacuation)

• Risk analysis and mitigation

• Distribution of Personal Protection Equipment

Ch. Delamare GS-ASE

Persons in LHC – Sept. 2014 – March 2015

13

Access Systems – Special SMACC

Ch. Delamare GS-ASE

• «James Bond» suitcase

• Specific development

• Used in some LHC points

• Easier access of the SMACC train

Our opinion: useful system but not essential

Page 14: Http://indico.cern.ch/event/373053/ GS activities during LS1 Christophe Delamare GS-ASE EDMS 1499839

14

Access Systems – Availability/flexibility

• Availability

• Very few incidents with the Access Systems

• MAD difficulties => remote operation by CSA

• Systems heavily solicited

• More maintenance

• Always difficult to find slots for maintenance

• “Swap”/juggling between the access points

• Typical use case: incident with lifts

• Flexibility well appreciated by EN-MEF

• Manual procedure for the LS1

Access Systems – Lessons learnt

• Two different contexts

• Large Project (owner)

• E.g. PS Access, LHC Access LS1 evolutions

• “Small” project workpackage

• E.g. SUSI Access Control (or Fire detection works)

• plan.cern.ch was essential

• Permitted to identify tens of coming requests

• Should come asap for LS2

• Identify and analyze proposed evolutions asap (ECR)

• Point 7 Collimation: September 2012

• Preparatory phase organized by EN-MEF well appreciated

• Integration (3D) laser scans, studies and conflict detections to pursue and reinforce

• Early detection of conflicts between key projects (and “big” items)

• E.g. PS Access & PS Cooling and Ventilation

• Develop and simplify publication and approval of 3D views

• Keep the notion of “LS1 mode” (Access Safety System “in reduced mode”)

• To be planned with BE DSO

Page 16: Http://indico.cern.ch/event/373053/ GS activities during LS1 Christophe Delamare GS-ASE EDMS 1499839

16

Access Systems – Lessons learnt

• Access conditions & Safety training

• A lot of newcomers – how to practice ? Safety Training Center ?

• Safety trainings (&DBs) must be in place much before the start of the LS

• CSA (guards) involvement

• Clear need: the integrity of the envelop

• MAD remote operation very useful to handle difficult cases

• Dedicated and trained “ZORA team”

• Coordination in LHC & injectors well appreciated

• Coordination in Meyrin Experimental areas – room for improvement

• Planning and stakeholders especially in commissioning phase

• Identification of the actors to operate infrastructure

• DSO tests are essential

• Allocate and “protect” the slots – huge commitment of several teams

• Works on some EIS-beam just before these tests

• Keep in mind the specific maintenance requirements of these equipment

• Validation, traceability, etc.Ch. Delamare GS-ASE

• Task force for the space requirements

• Involved long negotiations – time consuming

• Implied construction and transformation works before LS1 period started

Civil Engineering – Lessons learnt

• Allow sufficient time for preparation

• Many things GS-SE does are needed well before the beginning of the shutdown.

• Additional resources need to be on board well in anticipation (1 year!).

• Strategy of support contracts needs to be finalized NOW.

• Note that Civil Engineering large works require ~2-3 years from the decision to the realization (contract for design, design, building permits, contracts for works, works)

• Huge list already collected (e.g. Chamonix)

• Communicate at all level (internal/external to the group)

• Management of priorities (machine/tertiary)

• Quick decisions are needed to shift personnel from the standard services (e.g. leaking roof) to tunnel services (e.g. equipment supports)

• Time consuming participation to coordination meetings.Ch. Delamare GS-ASE
