Air travel is the most popular mode of transport:

• In 2003, out of approximately 61 million visits abroad made by UK residents, more than three quarters were made by air.

• In the same year, 71% of the 24.8 million visits made by overseas residents to the UK, were by air.

Visits by the sea were the second most popular mode of travel:

• In 2003, approximately 9 million visits made by UK residents abroad used sea transport, (15% of total overseas travel).

• In the same period, 18% of overseas residents’ visits to the UK used sea transport (4.5 million trips).

Visits using the Channel Tunnel were the next most popular:

• In 2003, 8% of UK residents’ visits abroad (4.9 million trips) used the Channel Tunnel.

The choice of transport routes to and from popular tourism destinations has increased in recent years:

• Air travel has come within the reach of many consumers.

• The mass market for discount airline fares and the expansion of regional airports in the UK and wider Europe demonstrates this development.
