Do you snore or know someonewho does? Do you haveObstructive Apnea but just can’t

tolerate your CPAP machine? You’re notalone!

An estimated 40 million Americanssnore and nearly 20 million have SleepApnea, a condition where the airwaycollapses during sleep, causing the per-son to stop breathing and awaken multi-ple times every hour with a gasp.

Sleep Apnea is a life-threatening sleepdisorder that left undiagnosed, anduntreated can shorten your lifespan upto 18 years! While CPAP is the gold stan-dard of sleep apnea treatment, manypeople can’t tolerate the masks and pres-sure. An oral appliance is an FDAapproved CPAP alternative that fits overyour teeth and holds the lower jaw for-ward, keeping your airway from col-

lapsing. A sleep apnea sufferer himself,Dr. Kitzmiller and his wife, Lori, knowfirsthand the disruptions that untreatedSleep Apnea can cause.

“We used to think that snoring wasnormal, but when Tim would stopbreathing for up to 20 seconds at a timeand then wake with a gasp, I got scared. After being diagnosed with SleepApnea, he tried to use CPAP but hissleeping habits made it too difficult touse. He’s been using and treatingpatients with Oral Appliance Therapynow for years… and now we’re bothgetting a restful night’s sleep!” says Lori.

“I hadn’t been to thedentist in a long timebecause I was scared,”explains the Erlanger resi-dent. “My previousexpereinces were not pos-itive. The dentist wasn’tnice and it was verypainful.”

Her husband, however, finally convinced her tocall Morteson FamilyDental. She decided onthem because they hadsent “the Tooth Fairy” toher daughter’s school todiscuss good dentalhygene.

“I figured if they were

kind enough to send inthe Tooth Fairy to talk tothe kids, maybe they’d bekind to me.

“I noticed a differenceabout them when I firstcalled,” she says. “When Icalled to make theappointment, I was cry-ing. They were so kind. They comforted me andreasured me.”

Once in the office, thisdidn’t stop.

“They were patientwith me and took time toexplain every proceedurebefore it was completed.”

When it came time forher dental workMortenson Family Dentaloffered Lisa the opportu-

Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schusslerknew she wanted to be adentist from the time she

was 9 years old. Now her deter-mination and years of educationhave paid off, and in the past 11years she has gained insight andknowledge from the patients shehas treated as a dentist. Last yearshe opened her family dentalpractice in Hebron, in the RemkeMarket Plaza – and she loves ithere.

“In our practice we want all ofour patients and their families tofeel welcome and comfortable,”says Dr. Schussler. “We havedesigned our office to be gentleand inviting, and this is what wewant people to take away withthem – the feeling of being com-fortable while here, like going toa family gathering, or visitingwith some friends.”

Dr. Schussler knows that thereare many people who are nerv-ous about, or, uncomfortable

with, dental procedures of anytype, and she works with eachpatient to try and determine thesource of the fear, and thus put itto rest by not repeating it.

“During a patient’s visit, wespend 60 to 80 minutes withthem, talking about the expecta-tions they have for their smile, performing a comprehensiveexam, taking only necessary x-rays, and cleaning their teeth. This is when most adults willexpress their concerns about anyfuture procedures.

“Children are different,”explains Dr. Schussler, “Somekids will jump right up in thechair and say, ‘My turn!’ Whileothers are more shy, so, for veryyoung patients we perform theexam on their parent’s lap tomake it seem less threatening. We just take it as slow as theyneed.”

Dr. Schussler performs mostdental procedures, including

whitening, extractions and rootcanals, as well as all routine care.Patients who require orthodonticcare will be referred as needed. Both Dr. Schussler and staff com-municate the importance of goodoral care to patients, with respect tokeeping and maintaining theirteeth in relationship with their totalbody health. Studies show linksexist between oral care and cardio-vascular health and diabetes.

“We perform a thoroughassessment of each patient, diag-nosing any oral conditions, developing a treatment plan, controlling inflammation anddisease, and make a plan to keeptheir mouth healthy. Througheducation and counseling, wegently put the patient on theright path for good oral health.

“One of the goals I have formy practice,” she says, “is to behere for several generations. Ihope to follow the children I seetoday, right into the time when

they can bring their children in,too. I want to see the whole fami-ly, not just a few members. Infact, we’d like to remind parentsto schedule their children’s visitsregularly, as even though schoolhas just let out for the summer, that time will quickly be hereagain.”

In conclusion, Dr. Schusslerexpresses that she would like toprovide treatment to each gener-ation without fear of dental pro-cedures, counseling the ideal thateveryone will consider good oralcare and to be an integral part ofthe health of the whole person.

Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schussleroffers digital radiographs, paper-less charting and registration, and has convenient office hoursincluding one evening per week, and Saturdays. Visit them atwww.schusslerdentistry.com, orcall her competent and friendlystaff at 653-0525 to set up yourappointment.

ith the economy taking a nose dive, Americansare cutting back on spending – from food andtravel to even medical treatments. Both health

care and dental care are taking a back seat to moreurgent needs.

According to a recent survey by Cigna, a leadingprovider of health benefits, 41 percent of Americansare taking worse care of their health because of theeconomy. In fact, nearly half of Americans report thatsomeone in their household has skipped necessaryhealth care in the past year due to the cost, accordingto a recent Kaiser Foundation Poll. A recent studypublished in “Health Services Research” found thatan increase in unemployment may be associated withfewer preventive care visits.

Even though times are tough, it is still importantto take care of your body, particularly your oralhealth. With 92 percent of adults ages 20 to 64 experi-encing tooth decay – which can lead to cavities – intheir permanent teeth at some point in their lives, proper oral care routines and preventive dental carevisits are more essential than ever for achieving acleaner, healthier mouth.

New York-based dentist Dr. Gregg Lituchy advises“include a fluoride rinse in your daily oral care rou-tine to help protect your teeth against cavities. I rec-

ommend my patients use an anti-cavity fluoride rinsethat delivers multiple benefits”

Dr. Lituchy offers four easy tips to help reduce therisk of oral care problems and maintain a beautifulsmile – without hurting your wallet:

• Multitask. Rinse your mouth with an anti-cavitymouthwash while you’re washing your face.

• Avoid sticky situations. Foods that stick to yourteeth create an environment for bacteria to thrive, sothe best strategy is to brush your teeth after mealsand snacks.

• Don’t skip your dental check-ups. Visiting yourdental professional at least twice a year is the bestway to maintain good oral health and detect prob-lems early on that could cause you more economicpain in the future.

• Technique matters. Learn the proper way tobrush and floss. Ask your dental professional or visitthe American Dental Association Web site,www.ada.org, which offers educational tutorialvideos.

People around the country are get-ting ready to enjoy the great out-doors and fire up the grill on a

warm summer day. The warmerweather and longer days are perfectfor enjoying fresh flavorful foods andoutdoor activities such as walking.

The following tips to ensure a sum-mer full of healthy habits:

1. Fire up the flavor: Grilling is agreat way to experience new flavorswithout added fat and calories. Shopat home and look for things youalready have in your cupboard.Vinegars and juice-based marinadescan maximize flavors for meat, fishand vegetables and dry rubs can turn abland meat dish into a soulful, spicysupper.

2. Fresh finds: Remember thatgrilling is not just for meat and poul-try. Fresh vegetables are a delightfultreat. Choose foods that are tender andcook quickly. Less expensive optionslike potatoes, onions, corn and squashjust need basic seasonings and they areready to grill. To bulk this up as a big-ger side dish, add inexpensive pasta orbeans to the grilled vegetables.

3. Cut those coupons: Check yourlocal supermarket circular for what’son sale. And think beyond beef –remember you can enjoy a lean burgermade from chicken, turkey or salmon.

4. Water down your beverage bill:Try skipping the soda aisle and usegood old tap water and teach the kidshow to make “sun tea” – set tea bagsin a pitcher and put it out on theporch. Or liven up regular water withfruit like lemons, limes and oranges.

5. End the day with a family activi-ty: Take a walk after dinner – not onlyis walking a free form of exercise, butalso a great way to connect with fami-ly, friends and neighbors. Walking alsohelps to burn calories and researchsuggests that regular physical activitymay help to reduce stress and improvesleep.

Tony Strinko ofIndependence hadendured shoulder

and neck pain as well asnumbness in his little fingerfor about three years. Visitsto other doctors providedmild to moderate success, but pain relief was alwaystemporary. Strinkoresearched cervical herniat-ed disc on the Internet, andrealized that what he need-ed was a doctor who coulddo non-surgical spinaldecompression. He calledthe Chiropractic RehabCenter on Buttermilk Pikeand asked if Dr. GaryCallioni performed spinaldecompression.

“Dr Callioni exceededmy expectations,” Strinkosays. “He has the knowl-edge and the equipment totreat my condition, andafter five weeks, I am painfree.”

When a cervical disc hasherniated or ruptured, itmay create pressure againstone or more of the spinal

nerves which can causepain, weakness or numb-ness in the neck, arms, andhands. Spinal decompres-sion stops pain by usingnegative pressure to createa vacuum that pulls thepainful disc back where itbelongs.

“Spinal decompressionis rapidly becoming one ofthe leading alternatives tosurgery for the conditionsof herniated, ruptured, ordegenerative discs,” saysDr. Callioni. “Tony realized

that this was the alternativehe wanted and it is work-ing for him. Not all peopleare good candidates for thistreatment, but Tony is.”

During warm-weather months, youhave a primitive urge to clean up,clean out, and re-arrange your living

space. Maybe it was easy for our forebears toclean out their caves, but for many of us itbecomes a real challenge.

Just about everyone would like to havemore living space. Here’s the secret most pro-fessionals agree upon: clutter is the enemy. It’s a challenge for most people to be ruthlesswhen cleaning out their living area (or clos-ets). But the results are a more serene andpeaceful environment that will soothe youwhen you open your front door.

Think about your options. Being tough iseasier when you know you are giving awayitems to a charitable organization, and thatsomeone in need will make good use ofthem; or, that you’ll make a little money byselling them. Live by the rule: reduce, reselland recycle.

Lauren Wilkins, an Interior Design instruc-tor at The Art Institute of New York City, sayssummer is prime time for entertaining wheneverything is more casual, so lighten the feelof your environment. She suggests havingsmall occasional tables, benches or stools topull out of the closet when company comes.Scale is important; remove a big table andadd nesting tables.

Brightening up the whole color scheme issimple and can be done inexpensively. Vibrant colors are sum-mery, or if you prefer, cool colors can create a serene environ-ment – think of the blues and aquas of the ocean, a lake or apool.

“The heavy objects like major pieces of furniture will stay, butpillows, throws and light-weight curtains can be bought veryinexpensively, and can change the tone of the room,” Wilkinssays. “The dark colors of fall – burgundy, brown, deep olive –are switched to bright florals, stripes or light solids. These areinexpensive but effective changes.”

LaToya Nelson, also an interior design instructor at The ArtInstitute of New York City, says: “Think about people in thespace in summer. Most people do entertain more, so visualizehow your interior and exterior interact together. Emphasize theflow between the interior and the patio, terrace or lawn.”

“Roll up your heavy rug, add a light colored straw rug,” she

suggests. She too is an advocate of nesting tables for entertaining.Nelson emphasizes sustainability: “Help the environment by

making sure the sun doesn’t blaze through the windows leadingto an increase in air conditioning use. Window treatments canhelp. They contribute to the aesthetic environment but also act asthermal barriers by reducing the direct impact of the sun,” shesays.

“If you have direct southern exposure, protect the room,”Nelson says. “Eco-friendly products utilizing rapidly renewableor recycled materials may enhance the interior atmosphere byconnecting the interior environment with nature. And of course, bringing plants inside is a way of bringing the outside in.”

Both instructors agree that this season it can be more than fur-niture you rearrange – it can be your attitude and awareness ofnature and its harmonious relationship with your home space.

Fire ants are very serious and territorial insects. They arenot only a nuisance to your property; they canharm you, your children and your pets. Being

able to identify fire ants, where they live, treat-ments for prevention, working with yourneighbors for season-long control, andwhat to do if you are stung are allvery important elements to educateyourself and family on in order tobe fire ant-free.

Identifying fire antsand their mounds

Fire ants are small insects. They range in size from 1/16to 1/5 of an inch long and aredark red and brown. A fire antmound can be identified by itsdome-shaped, soil-based struc-ture that forms the upper mostpart of a fire ant colony. Theirmounds can reach up to 12 inches ormore in diameter and height and areusually found where water is nearby andthe soil is damp.

Fire ants are hard workers and compile loosesoil and other contents in the surrounding area tobuild their mounds. Mounds are typically visible in yards assoil granules form a “mound” shape, but are small and often hiddenin grasses, weeds, under rocks and other landscaping. Mounds canpop up almost anywhere, but common places to watch for theminclude: Lawns and ornamental planting areas, patios, sidewalks, curbs, flower beds, compost piles, under trees and around electricalequipment. Be sure to keep an eye for fire ant mounds when you areenjoying parks, on golf courses, sports fields and any other placesyou, your kids or pets may walk through or play in.

Two-Step MethodThere are two common approaches for effectively controlling fire

ants – broadcast treatments and mound treatments. For large yardsand early season prevention, use a broadcast treatment to treat theentire yard. For smaller areas when visible mounds are present, use amound treatment directly around individual mounds.

For the most comprehensive control, especially in the case ofsevere infestation, experts recommend a Two-Step Method usingboth broadcast and mound treatment. First use a broadcast spreaderto treat your entire lawn. Then, treat particularly stubborn moundsyou see to eliminate fire ant activity in as little as one week.

It is an ant's nature to pick up food and bring it into the colony tofeed to the queen and other ants. You feed the worker ants and theyin turn, feed the queens. As the bait works, it destroys the colony.

Quite the opposite, but with the same results, fire ants unknow-ingly pick up treatments on their bodies, carry it back to the mound, and distribute it to other colony members including the queen. Fireants ingest it or absorb it through the cuticle, killing them anddestroying the colony.

By using both a mound treatment and a broadcast treatmenttogether, you achieve season-long control.

Neighborhood programsThe best way for homeowners to prevent fire ant infestations is to

coordinate treatment with neighbors. Acoordinated effort among neigh-

bors maximizes the treatedarea, making it harder

for fire ants to find aplace to re-colo-

nize. A neigh-borhood

Studiesshow that

areas with dili-gent neighbor-

hood fire ant controlprograms, where multi-

ple homeowners treat theirlawns at the same time with the

same fire ant control product, can reducethe number of active mounds by as much as 96 percent.

Treating fire ant stingsFire ants bite and then inflict painful stings, which cause small

blisters or pustules on the skin, typically up to 24 to 48 hours later. Ifyou, your child or your pet is stung by fire ants, it is important to fol-low first aid guidelines and to seek medical attention immediately ifthere is any suspicion of an allergic reaction. Allergic reactionsinclude severe swelling, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, headaches and sweating.

If blisters occur, make sure they are clean and avoid any actionthat might further irritate the area, such as scratching or rubbing.Rinse the sting area with cold water and gentle soap to avoid infec-tion and elevate the affected area of the body. You can use a coolcompress or ice to reduce swelling and alleviate pain and itching.

Summer is the season to enjoy the outdoors. Now is the time toeducate yourself and family on fire ants. Being able to identify fireants and their mounds, proper treatments and handling stings are allextremely important to avoid fire ant infestation. Take time to edu-cate yourself and family and enjoy a fire ant-free season.
