EQUIPMENT

The equipment section provides customers with an overview of the type, size, ancillaries and contents of the equipment held by Oil Spill Response at its main bases.

To reduce response times, some of the equipment has been pre-packaged into loads (refer to page 59-67) suited to generic spill and operational environments. In addition to the specifi cation of the equipment, an indication of the logistics, technical complexity and skilled manpower requirements to deploy and operate the equipment is provided using simple icons.

When making equipment and strategy selections, these attributes need to be considered as they form a major component of the response effectiveness.

Safety, Communication and CommandApplication

Oil Spill Response has a range of communications equipment suitable for setting up a fi eld command post and keeping in touch with advanced fi eld posts, whilst being able to relay information back to headquarters.

VHF Base Stations and VHF Repeater Stations are compatible with all internationally recognised marine VHF simplex channels together with semi-duplex channels.

Oil Spill Response offers Satellite Communications Packages, Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN), which is provided by INMARSAT to allow internet access from virtually all areas of the world except for polar regions. The use of this simple and portable BGAN will allow access to email and other offi ce applications. We also use Iridium and other satellite communications equipment.

Safety Equipment

Oil Spill Response can deploy aerial and personal gas monitors for on-site entry and where required.

49Application

Besides the large aerial dispersant application systems which are offered as prepackaged loads, Oil Spill Response can also supply other dispersant application systems. Helicopter spray pods can be used to spot treat oil slicks. They are also useful as standby equipment during drilling operations.

Boatspray, Portable Boat sprays or Chemspray systems can be mounted on the deck of a vessel.

Fluorometry equipment is also available to measure dispersant effectiveness.

50 Application

Oil Spill Response has a number of active recovery boom systems. These are designed to concentrate and recover large quantities of oil spilt at sea resulting from a major disaster such as an oil-well blow out or tanker accident which produces a continuous release. These will handle heavy oils with medium viscosity. The operation of this equipment requires signifi cant resources to be in place to make the deployment successful such as support vessels, storage and skilled operators.

Booms

Application

Oil Spill Response has a range of booms that can be used for offshore, near shore, or shoreline responses. Due to differing operational conditions a variety of boom types are held in the stockpile.

Offshore booms are larger and made using a heavier duty material. These are supplied on a reel for ease of deployment, which can then be mounted on the deck of a suitable vessel.

The majority of the shoreline booms are air infl atable and manufactured from polyurethane nylon fabric.

Spill Environment

Inland Shoreline Offshore

52 Application

Oil Spill Response has several options for temporary storage. During offshore containment and recovery, if storage vessels are not available, recovered oil can be temporarily stored in infl atable barges. These come in two sizes: 25m3 or 50m3.

Waste containment tanks are also available with a capacity of 9m3 which can be used in conjunction with a heating system capable of heating oil with a high pour point when recovered during offshore or shoreline recovery.

Alternatively Oil Spill Response can provide infl atable oil storage bags with storage capacities of 100m3, 200m3 and 500m3.

Temporary portable storage tanks are available. These come in two sizes: 2,000 gallons or 1,100 gallons.

Oiled Wildlife Response

Application

Oil Spill Response now holds a wide range of oiled wildlife response equipment in conjunction with the Sea Alarm Foundation. By combining the expertise of both companies a comprehensive package has been formulated to assist with the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of wildlife affected by oil spill incidents. This equipment can easily be shipped together with other response equipment and utilised by trained wildlife response experts provided through the Sea Alarm Foundation.

Recovery Devices

Application

Oil Spill Response has a large range of recovery devices that are used on light, medium and heavy oils. Oleophilic, weir and mechanical skimmers provide the ability to recover a range of oil types in a variety of environments.

Skimmers should be used in conjunction with containment booms where slick thickness is increased to maximise recovery effi ciency. When choosing a skimmer type the oil viscosity, propensity to emulsify and expected operational conditions should fi rst be identifi ed. Factors such as size, robustness, ease of operation, and necessary maintenance should be assessed.

The most important factor is the viscosity of the spilt oil and how it might change over time. In predictable situations, such as at marine terminals and refi neries where the type of oil handled is known, a specialised skimmer most suited to that particular oil can be identifi ed in advance.

The trailers have been equipped with shoreline booms and ancillaries to enable Oil Spill Response to react quickly and deploy boom rapidly to protect a specifi c site at risk. Due to the region’s reliance on salt water intakes for numerous uses this gives us the capability to be prompt to protect this vital resource from contamination.
