PDN PHOTO OF THE DAY

Hidden (7 photos)OCT 08, 2010 01:00A.M.

All photos © Michael Tummings. Above: Hermannstadt VI

“This moment is full of tension, loaded with possibility and suspended

silence”.

Michael Tummings says,” The hunter waits in silence, stilling his

movement and reducing his breath to a minimum. Waiting and

watching, he attempts to become invisible, to disappear into the natural

background. Here, the external and internal noises, the distractions of

modernity, are cancelled out in a single moment– a spasm of time that is

irreversible. These photographs reference the classic European tradition

of paintings depicting the hunt, in addition to 20th century photographic

portraiture. The rituals and divisions of class are inherent to the images

in Hidden, as are both the modernization and preservation of tradition.

Employing 5 x 4 analogue photography, the series uses a detached

camera eye to observe the social dynamics of the group, its rituals, and

the ways in which they are infused with meaning.”

Michael Tummings is a Munich, Germany based artist, whose work is

featured in the new issue of Fraction Magazine. To see more of

Tummings work click here. To view the new issue of Fraction magazine

Halloween Special: Dust OffYour Camera for Killer GhostlyPhotosOCT 07, 2010 07:00P.M.

but apparently, we were wrong. Ghosts come in all shapes and sizes!

Some are transparent and grumpy, some jolly and made of

marshmallow. Others float and induce sadistic sneezing sessions.

…Like the spooky figures in Ujin Lee and Tom Edward’s “Dust” series.

Their powdery explosions take the form of ghostly figures photographed

in eerie locations, like abandoned playgrounds and empty museum halls.

Another photographer, Marie Hanhnhon Nguyen, experiments with

flour, creating images of floating clouds and phantom-like human

figures.

The flour envelops her subjects in a white transparent glow, giving the

photos a deliciously haunting mood.

If you’re inspired to try your own powdery phantom photos, we rounded

up a few more projects to whet your appetite!:

• Use smoke drops, which are perfect for spooky-fying your photos

(example: The scariest photo you’ll ever see).

• Use mystifying color smoke balls, like those in Ólafur Arnalds’

music video.

• Take a look at The Flour Hour Flickr pool, which is packed with

flour photo play.

• Check out Wizard Smoke by Salazar, a short video featuring

phantom-esque skateboarders dressed in flour and tempera

powder paint. Their movements leave ghostly trails of human-

shaped clouds behind them.

Italian Project Photographs 28-Gigapixel-Images of FamousPaintingsOCT 05, 2010 06:03A.M.

The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. Top image: Zoomed all the way out.

Bottom image: Zoomed all the way in on an eye.

www.haltadefinizione.com

Haltadefinizione or HAL9000 (Open the bay doors HAL), is an Italian

project that undertakes the process of photographing extremely high-

definition images of famous paintings and putting them online for

everyone to see.

Works already available in their interactive online gallery-viewer

include: Da Vinci’s Last Supper and Annunciation, Botticelli’s The Birth

of Venus, Verrocchio and Leonardo’s The Baptism of Christ, Gaudenzio

Ferrari’s Life Stories of Christ, Pontormo’s Deposition, Agnolo

Bronzino’s Elanor of Toledo, Francesco Paolo Michetti’s The Daughter

of Iorio and Caravaggio’s Bacchus.

Earlier works that were photographed, like The Last Supper, consisted of

16 billion pixels, although some of the newly photographed works consist

of a mind-blowing 28 billion pixels (which is technically less than half

the pixels of the “world’s largest photo,” a 70-gigapixel image of

Budapest). The images are made up of thousands of individual

photographs taken with Nikon cameras (newer images were shot with

D3X’s while older ones were shot with D2X’s).

The project’s Web site claims that the goal of taking such detailed images

is to provide an experience that one could only previously get through

viewing each respective painting in person—although with 28 billion

pixels, one can zoom in on a painting (via the online gallery-viewer) to a

point that previously could only be seen using a magnifying device.

Currently, Haltadefinizione is working to digitize an additional 24

paintings from the Ufizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

While we still highly recommend seeing these famous works of art in

person if you have the chance, viewing them on Haltadefinizione’s site is

a real treat. The detail that can be seen when zoomed all the way in is

unbelievable.

For more information, check out Haltadefinizione’s site.

Jan Banning says, “This photo was made in the Old Secretariat in Patna,

Bihar, India, while working on my project ‘Bureaucratics’. Because of the

strong diagonal, I considered it too ‘dynamic’ to be included in the book

or the exhibition of the same name. How dynamic was the situation in

this typeroom really? When I entered, of the dozen or so people in the

room, two or three were snoring. Others had their feet on the desk and

were comfortably – but living dangerously – leaning backward on their

chair’s two hind legs, dozing away. One man was actually doing what I

naively thought they were all supposed to do: typing. When asked why

they kept this ‘typewriter graveyard’, he answered: ‘This is not a

graveyard! These typewriters are awaiting new personnel. We’re 40%

understaffed.”

‘Bureaucratics’ can be seen as part of the Moving Walls exhibit at Open

Society Institute and also at the Half King gallery in New York, NY.

Nikon Coolpix P7000 ReviewOCT 04, 2010 10:30P.M.

Nikon have been closely competing with Canon in the DSLR arena for

many years, but they’ve always come second-best (or worse) in the

compact camera market. The new Coolpix P7000 is a clear attempt to

redress that balance, with a completely revised design that is aiming for

the jugular of the market-leading Canon PowerShot G-series. Read our

in-depth Nikon Coolpix P7000 review to find out if it can topple the King

from his throne...

Frolicking about the garden chasing butterflies and bubbles with camera

in hand…

An outsider might call this a case of fallen-and-bumped-your-head, but

we call it a great time!

Richard Heeks, better known as The Bubble Master (and who we posted

about on our Tumblr recently!), introduced us to these three sure fire

ways to capture incredible photos of bubbles.

1) Make your bubble look like a planet

Quicktips: Use a macro lens or settings, close-up where the sun reflects

off the surface, capture the bubble against a shadow (this will make it

look like a planet floating in space!)

2) Capture the pop

Quicktips: Fast shutterspeed – around 1/500, use rapid fire shoot

settings, take lots of photos (it took Richard a month to capture his

series)

3) Shoot your self portrait in a bubble (and other reflections!)

Quicktips: Shoot on a non windy day, Richard shot at f/5, 1/400, ISO

400 for his bubble reflection self portrait, use a telephoto lens (you can

use zoom, also) – for example, Richard usually shot at 70mm

More Bubble Photo Tips:

1) Photograph when the air is still

2) shoot at sunrise or sunset

3) manual focus if you can (since autofocus doesn’t always

focus correctly with transparent subjects)

4) the thickness of the bubble and the bubble’s surroundings

will affect the color

Bubbles. Who’da thought? They’ve only been floating in front of our

noses all these years.
