ALO is the jam that you put on your toast: The members ofAnimal Liberation Orchestra, better known as ALO, aremore than just friends ofJack Johnson. The local guys arealso employees of and musical collaborators with the surfer-songwriter, who coproduced ALOs newMan of the Worldand put it out on his Brushfire Records imprint.

Jack essentially became a fifth member of the band for theproject, says guitarist Dan Lebowitz, who says traveling toJohnsons studio in Oahu was inspiring. By recording inHawaii, we were forced to break from our individual norms, which put us in a great position to focus on the creativeaspects of the album.

Coinciding with the release ofMan of the Worldis ALOsfourth annual Tour dAmour, which this year is raising moneyfor local nonprofit Music in Schools Today. In high school, Ihad the opportunity to be in a jazz band, a jazz choir, aconcert choir, and a concert band, Lebowitz says. With allof the budget cuts, these classes dont exist today. Themusician that I am today is the direct result of a public-schoolmusic program, and we want to give back what was given tous.

Prior to heading up to Vancouver to perform during theOlympics, ALO stops off at the Fillmore on Saturday, Feb. 20.

When you play at the Fillmore, its hard not to be struck withawe when you consider whats gone down there over the pastfive or so decades, says Lebowitz, who adds that theresanother reason playing hometown shows is special: Its notout of the question that my junior-high English teacher wouldshow up.

Spring has sprung a little early:SFJAZZ is responsible for themonthlong San Francisco JazzFestival , but you dont have to waituntil the fall to be entertained bythe local nonprofit. The 11th annualSFJAZZ Spring Season, whichruns for the next four months, kicks

off on Friday, Feb. 19, with Cubansinger Issac Delgado, who will turnBimbos 365 Club into a 50ssupperclub in Havana.

The Spring Seasons longer timeframe makes it possible to explorethemes more deeply than the SanFrancisco Jazz Festival, saysSFJAZZ executive artistic directorRandall Kline. Other events onopening weekend include jazzorchestra Max Raabe and PalastOrchester, which will takeattendees back to the Weimar era

during its performance on Saturday,Feb. 20, at the Paramount Theatre inOakland; and northern Mali outfitTinariwen at the Palace of FineArts Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 21.

Themes covered through June 12include Jazz Giants, the ECMSeries, Global Village, SoulfulSingers, String Things, LeadingEdge, Pianism, and Deep Groove.

The Bay Area has such a cosmopolitan makeup, and we try

to reflect that in our programming, Kline says. For moreinformation about the SFJAZZ Spring Season, visitwww.sfjazz.org .

A Three becomes one: Pete Bernhard will sleep when hesdead. In the meantime, Bernhard, who spends plenty of timeon the road fronting the Devil Makes Three, is in the midst ofa West Coast tour in support of his second solo disc, lastyears Straight Line. I want to take a break sometimes, but Idont, says Bernhard, who started the bluegrass-fueled DM3in Santa Cruz but now splits his time between Davis andVermont. Im slowly driving myself insane. Really, though, Ienjoy what I do, so most of the time I have no desire to taketime off.

Like his work with his day job, Straight Line features asmattering of genres that work well together under Bernhardscreative umbrella, including rock, soul, blues, and a healthydose of twang. Writing for and with the Devil Makes Threeis pretty smooth at this point, he says. We have all beenworking together for so long that it comes very naturally. Solo,I have to work with myself, which can be hard. Even whenyoure self-employed, you still end up hating your boss.

On Sunday, Feb. 21, Bernhard brings his solo wares to CafDu Nord, where hell be aided by bassist Max Hart and

drummer Jason Chase, both of whom helped make StraightLine.
