TUHS Future Farmers of America host 6th Annual Donkey Basketball April 6th

The Taft High Union High School Future Farmers of America will host the sixth annual donkey basketball game at Mullen Gym at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6. The game pits staff vs. students and is usually a very close match. The hilarious game is played with five-member teams. Players must be atop a donkey to shoot or pass the ball. They may get off the donkey, but must lead it by the reins, for rebounds and loose balls. The humor comes when the humans try to get on the donkeys too fast and fall off and when the donkeys have their own ideas on what they want to do. The game is a fund-raiser for the FFA. Admission costs $5 in advance with tickets available at the TUHS business office or from any FFA member. Tickets purchased at the door will cost adults $7, children 6-11 $5 and those under 6 will be admitted free. For more information, call the FFA at 763-2300, ext. 481.

Thompson Asked to Resign from Taft City Council Letter From City Council Majority Reportedly Asks Thompson To Resign Taft City Councilman Cliff Thompson has been asked to resign from the Taft City Council in a letter signed by three councilmen, according to an undisclosed source. According to Taft Mayor Dave Noerr, the letter was handed to Thompson by Noerr at the Tuesday evening Taft City Council meeting. “I signed the letter and I handed it to him," said Noerr, who declined to disclosed the letter’s contents. Councilmen Randy Miller and Paul Linder both confirmed that they had also signed the letter. Thomspon has been under investigation by a law firm retained by the city council to investigate allegations Thompson had created a hostile work environment among Taft city employees. “I can not reveal what's in the letter, but much more is involved," said Councilman Miller. The city council held a special meeting on Tuesday evening to formally respond to a Grand Jury report that was critical of the council and the city manager, and said that Thomspon had violated the public trust by participating in evaluations of the city manager when he had a conflict of interest that prevented him from involvement in the evaluations. “The Grand Jury report has nothing to do with our asking Thompson to resign," said Miller. The council is scheduled to meet next week to consider a resolution of censure against Thompson, however Miller says the censure item will be pulled from th agenda pending further investigation and completion of the censure process that will allow Thompson to prepare for the censure hearing.

Council Reponds to Grand Jury Reprt

The Taft City met on Tuesday this week and spent nearly two hours hammering out a response to the Kern County Grand Jury Report hat was critical of the council and the city manager. The council responded to the 32 findings and 8 reccomendations, agreeing with about half of the findings unanimouly, but disagreeing on several findings that were critical of City Manager Bob Gorson. Councilmen Noerr, Linder and Miller voted together opposing Thompson and Noble on several findings that disagreed with the Grand Jury and generally supported City Manager Bob Gorson. “I feel vindicated,” said City Manager Bob Gorson on the council majority’s vote against Grand Jury criticism of the city manager. “I am pleased that we can put this behind us and get on with the work of the city.”

Counciman Paul Linder said he also felt that the council majority’s repsonse was a vindication of Gorson. “It was a vindication of the city manager,” Linder said. Councilman Randy Miller said that he didn’t apprecite the Grand Jury condemning the entire body of the council’s work. “I’ve served for 7 years and we have done a lot of good work for Taft,” Miller said. “They picked on one issue and ignore our other work.” The completed report will be sent to the Grand Jury Friday.

You Hear it First!

Janet Armstrong- “I started a little over a year ago with kickboxing after I went through some rough personal issues. I love it, it has become my hobby and has made everything in my life so much better. I have lost 95lbs so far and I continue to come everyday. Wendy has been a great inspiration, she has taught me how to eat right, and the correct way to exercise and it feels great!”

Ian Miller- “I joined about a month ago to get in shape and measure out for the Navy, within a week I had already lost 8 lbs. The program has really helped me with cardio, running and just about everything. Because of the program I met my requirements and I will actually be shipping out for the Navy in about a month, I wouldn’t have been able to do this without Wendy’s help and the help of this program.”

Tiffany Barker- “ I started here at the gym in January with kickboxing and boot camp and now I have more stamina and endurance. It really helps a lot to be able to have access to Wendy when you need her, she has helped me out in every area, especially with nutrition.”

Heather Lema, 73- “I cant say enough good things about Wendy and how she has helped me. I’ve had memberships at other gyms and I feel very comfortable here and taken care of on a personal level.”

Betty Miller, 87- “I started exercising when I was 50 years old and it made a complete difference in my life, I was able to hike the Grand Canyon and do other hiking trips. I started personal training with Wendy, and when my sessions are over I hope to join other classes here. Wendy is very patient, kind, and loving, and knows what she is talking about.”

Want to Get in Shape? It’s Time to Take the “Next Step!” Testimonies from Members at Next Step Cardio.

Wendy Soto, owner of Next Step Cardio.

Want to get in shape? It’s time for you to take the “Next Step” at Next Step Cardio and Fitness Club. For over a year now, next Step Cardio has been educating the community of Taft of the importance of exercise, fitness, and nutrition for an overall healthy lifestyle. Wendy Soto and Veronica Sandoval, co-owners of Next Step, have taken their passions to promote a healthy lifestyle to the next level by encouraging and inspiring members to do the same. “It’s never too late to get in shape,” said Wendy, “I want to educate and help the members of this gym to reach their goals and to incorporate what they learn into a new lifestyle.”

Wendy goes beyond just signing up new members, she consults each new member to teach them what is right for their experience level, and what it will take them to get where they want to be. “I like to discuss their workout level, their overall goal, how they want to achieve it, and educating members about nutrition as well,” said Wendy, “It all goes hand in hand, I want to keep my members here and offer them new classes and programs so they continue to workout and not feel lost within the gym.” Wendy also sees the importance of educating our children and their parents about the rise of childhood obesity and diabetes. “We see these diseases on the rise in our country and in our community due to bad eating habits and lack of exercise and there are easy steps that we can take to get the entire family involved in living a healthy lifestyle,” said Wendy. Obesity is a serious health concern for children and adolescents. Results from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years are obese. Between 1976-1980 and 1999-2000, the prevalence of obesity increased. Between 1999-2000 and 2007-2008 there was no significant trend in obesity prevalence. Among pre-school age children 2-5 years of age, obesity increased from 5 to 10.4% between 1976-1980 and 2007-2008 and from 6.5 to 19.6% among 6-11 year olds. Among adolescents aged 12-19, obesity increased from 5 to 18.1% during the same period. With Wendy’s background in holistic nutrition, she has been able to guide and teach many members about making small changes to ensure their health. “If people wait to start exercising they can end up with complications and limit what they can do, it is better to start exercising before these problems begin and important to teach exercise at a young age,” said Wendy. From young children to active adults to people just discovering fitness and to senior citizens, Next Step Cardio has something for everyone at every level.

Next Step currently offers classes in Cardio Kickboxing, Kickboxing,

Chris Carpenter- “I started the boot camp program in January to get in shape, I love the program and look forward to coming to the class everyday. I’ve made new friends and I’m not ready for the class to be over. Wendy is very knowledgeable, she knows how to work every muscle, even if you are injured and you can call her anytime if you have any questions, she is really there for us.”

Cory Kitchens- “I started about 3 months ago with boot camp, and I have already lost 50 lbs. The program is fresh and new, Wendy changes it up every day to keep us interested and excited and to keep us coming back every day.”

Haylie Marie Terrell, 12, of Lincoln Jr. High School will be competeing in her first pageant at Taft Union High School April 10th at 4pm. Haylie received a letter in the mail that was sent out to other Kern County residents between the ages of 7 and 19 to compete in the Nationals 2010 Bakersfield Pageant, a personality based pageant that awards scholoarships. Haylie was selected to compete after the interview process and will be in the pre-teen category. The winners will go on to compete at the 2011 Cities of America National Pageant in Florida. “I thought it would be a good experience and something fun to try and to get involved in,” said Haylie, “Hopefully I make it in to the top 10, but im just excited to go through the whole process.”

Grappling, Boxing, Boot Camp Program, Weight Training, Strong Man, MMA, Children’s Cardio Kickboxing, and personal training sessions for any age and experience level. “ Our kids instructor, Trent, is great at teaching the techniques to the kids and also about educating them on how exercising is important and to stick with it,” said Wendy. New classes have started forming, a Women’s Self Defense Class starts next week, and new kickboxing and step aerobics classes begin soon. “I would like to add a Yoga class and a Hip Hop class to the gym as well,” said Wendy, “I would like to offer more classes and fill the requests of our members and give them more options.” Next Step also offers nutritional consultations and has started carrying popular supplements. Next Step started a Boot Camp Program in January that has become one of their most popular classes. Boot Camp is a 16 week program, for an hour a day, 5 days a week. However, most of the members involved in the program continue to take the boot camp classes after they have finished their first 16 week session. Recently, Next Step has also started a strong man class lead by Aaron Heid that will lead into a strong man event at the end of May or beginning of June, It will be the first strong man challenge in Kern County. The sport of strongman consist of several tasks that must be done under specific circumstances. Typical events of a competition might be flipping a truck tire a certain distance for speed, pressing a log overhead for maximum reps, farmer’s carry of two heavy implements a certain distance for speed, or lifting a large, heavy stone to platforms of different heights for time. Points are awarded in each event based on placing and the one with the most points at the end is the winner. The fact that the

events are not standardized makes the sport unique and it requires well-rounded preparedness by its athletes.

Next Step boxing instructor Ron Valdez has started a boxing program for students in Jr. High and High School, and is recruiting students from low income areas to promote a positive outreach to students that maybe wouldn’t try boxing or get involved because of the costs. “This program would create more events for the students to get involved in and strive for,” said Wendy, “I would like to hold a boxing event at least every 3 months.” On Saturday, April 10th Next Step Jiu-Jitsu instructor, John Dodson, will be hosting a Jiu-Jitsu for MMA Seminar with UFC trainer David Camarillo. The seminar will be from 10:00am to 1:00pm and the cost is $40 per person. The seminar will consist of 3 hours of No Gi grappling, fighting and some of the most innovative techniques that Dave has created from his Judo and Jiu-Jitsu background. Hi Everyone,Just got back from a four-day date trip to Washington DC with some Valley Pollution Control District board members and staff, oil company reps, and environment reps for a fact-finding tour to meet with our elected representatives. We were there to see if the district could stabilize its federal funding stream to continue the process to help clean up the valley air. It will be awhile to find out if our efforts were successful or not. The problem is that even if it is good for the people they

represent, there is a real problem to get bipartisan support. Getting the good things that need to be done in Washington these days is at a real stalemate. There wasn’t any time to go visit all the sights, heck you’d need 2 weeks at minimum from 8:00 to 5:00 to get most of it in. I was able to go to the Lincoln Memorial at 9:00 one night and sit on the steps and look down across the reflecting pool to see the Washington Monument and the Capital Building lit up on a cool clear night. It reminded me of the time my brother Rich and I were bringing his car from the east coast to Taft, and we had part of a day to spend in Washington and we sat on those very steps 25 years ago and saw the same sights in the day light. But, my real goal was to visit the Vietnam Memorial and to see and the touch the name of my friend Larry Gotcher who was killed on March 22, 1968; ironically it was two days and 42 years later. There are 14 names inscribed on the Wall from the Westside, you can find the same names on the plaque down at the Veterans Park next to City Hall. Washington I found is a City full of police uniforms, everywhere. Most of them are a little uptight and tense and not very friendly. They seem to be on every corner; every building you go into you have to go through a scanner and search. Vice President Biden was over at the Capital and he had two limos, a police car, four black SUV’s and later an ambulance stood by. A military helicopter was buzzing around, secret service, police officers with automatic weapons were in plain sight, and uniformed police were in the upper outside reaches of the Capital Building. All that for one person; guess stopping at the local convenience store to pick up a six pack for himself on the way home is out of the question. If you are looking for a job, security seems to be the hot ticket in Washington. Inside the congressional office buildings we visited, there are different cafeterias you could stop, rest, and get a bite to eat. The cashiers were not too friendly either. In fact, most of the people who waited on me back there seemed to all be a bit lacking in customer service skills. Maybe it’s the mood or the politics or the weather or they live on the east coast and they wished they lived on the west coast. A smile sure would go a long way. I’m sure it wasn’t just me who encountered the same thing. It just didn’t seem like they were happy to have job in these tough economic times. Customer service was much better and friendlier once the plane set back down in Bakersfield, but sometimes west coast folks go to the extreme when waiting on me by calling me sweetie or darling or honey. That just seems a little too personal, but I guess it is a little better than the grumps I met back east. If you haven’t been by the Rails to Trails lately from 2nd to 10th street, we have some new larger mature trees for your dogs to check out. The City worked a deal with the Tree Foundation and the City of Bakersfield to save over 50 mature trees in a parkway that needed to be removed. We got about 32 of them delivered and planted in Taft. Win-win all the way around. Also keep your eyes peeled for the derrick on the Oil Workers Monument to be erected sometime in April. The derrick will be 32 feet tall from the derrick floor. You may have noticed with the recent warm spell that weeds have popped up everywhere. Don’t expect City crews to cut then down for you. Once the moisture gets sucked out of them, you’d wished you got to them sooner. Pulling out wet weeds is much easier than when they dry up. Do your part to keep our City looking good.See you around town.

Westside News and Reviews

Aries (March 21-April 19): You’ve made all the right apologies, now it’s time for you to let this incident go. If you don’t, then how can anyone else?

Taurus (April 20-May 20): You’re sticking to your guns on this one, and that’s fine, but don’t be surprised by the consequences of your decisions. You knew what you were getting into.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): There will be a great opportunity heading your way this week, and while it might not seem lucrative right now, the benefits in the long run will be huge.

Cancer ( June 21-July 22): It’s going to be very difficult to not let your jealousy get the better of you this week, but for your own sake try very, very hard.

Leo ( July 23-August 22): You know your friend much better than either of you realizes. They may be saying they’re fine, but you both know they need a little extra attention right now.

Virgo (August 23-September 22): If you can get this latest project done and on time, then you’ll be in a pretty position to get some significant accolades at work.

Libra (September 23-October 22): There comes a point, both in friendships and family, where you have to make some of the effort. These things don’t just sustain themselves you know.

Scorpio (October 23-November 22): Try to be a little understanding if a close friend is on edge this week. It’s just that they’d much rather be sitting in your position than they’re own.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 21): If you don’t mean what you’re saying, then don’t say it. In this situation, you could really do a lot of damage by “meaning well.”

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): If you know that a loved one is making a huge mistake, it’s probably worth it to speak up. They may not want to hear it, but you’ll have done your part.

Aquarius ( January 20-February 19): Being in the middle of a fight that has nothing to do with you is a treacherous place to be. Step carefully and avoid the hidden landmines.

Pisces (February 20-March 20): Stop worrying about what might happen or what you think might happen. Nothing has happened, so your judgments are very unfair.

If your birthday is this week: Holding on to past hurts and grudges does nothing but cause you extra (and entirely unnecessary) gray hairs. You’re clinging to the weights that keep pulling you under, so just let go and you’ll be amazed at how much better you instantly feel. Even if you’re right, is it really doing you any good?

Wildflower Hotline Ready to Bloom A wet winter is leading to high hopes for the 2010 Kern County wildflower season. With the anticipation of colorful growth comes the annual launch of the Kern County Board of Trade’s Wildflower Hotline. The hotline, a telephone number and web site offering updates on wildflower growth and locations, officially began operation today and will continue throughout the season. Wildflower information is available around-the-clock for callers to 661-322-WILD or Internet users visiting the Board of Trade’s tourism web site at www.VisitKern.com. New this year is the addition of the Kern Wildflower Blog, which will allow nature enthusiasts to post information on the best places to see wildflowers and to share experiences with other wildflower devotees. Each spring the Wildflower Hotline receives thousands of inquiries about local growth from around the state and across the nation. Kern is home to a number of major wildflower species including the California poppy, Indian paintbrush, desert calico and San Joaquin wooly thread. Coreopsis, lupine and other varieties are also common. Wildflower enthusiasts are regular visitors to the county, contributing heavily to Kern’s $1.2 billion-per-year tourism industry. “Visitors come from all over to see what Kern County has to offer,” noted Rick Davis, Executive Director of the Kern County Board of Trade. “Kern is County is home to dozens of different species, so it’s definitely a favorite of wildflower enthusiasts.” Persons wishing to contribute their own sightings (including location and common name of the bloom) to the hotline may contact the Board of Trade during regular business hours (M-F, 8a-5p) at 661-868-KERN or 800-500-KERN. Sightings may also be submitted by e-mail at [email protected].

Redevelopment: Building Better Communties This is the 2nd in a series about redevelopment. You will be able to find all the articles (and other information specific to the City of Taft) on the city’s website at HYPERLINK "http://www.cityoftaft.org" www.cityoftaft.org The first article described how redevelopment started and what redevelopment funds may be used for generally. This article will describe how redevelopment (if used properly) benefits communities and improves the lives of its community stakeholders. Redevelopment provides workforce housing funds for subsidized apartments and homeownership opportunities reduce crime and code enforcement costs, improve infrastructure that will accommodate new industry, create jobs and expand opportunities for existing businesses to thrive. Redevelopment funds are also often used to clean up environmentally-challenged property and/or blighted areas or attract new businesses. The core function of redevelopment agencies is to serve as the catalyst for community revitalization projects. When redevelopment agencies make improvements to deteriorated areas, property values within those areas rise, resulting in an increase in property tax revenues. State law allows redevelopment agencies to use a small portion of this increase to repay debt they must incur in order to rehabilitate an area. Redevelopment agencies use these funds to buy property, build public improvements and infrastructure, clean-up contaminated soil, and do other things necessary to improve conditions of the property. This in turn attracts private investment and creates a chain reaction where the ultimate economic output and benefits of the community are much larger than the original public investment. In short, every $1 of redevelopment agency spending creates about $13 in total economic activity! Redevelopment agencies are local government entities usually controlled by the city council, county board of supervisors, or a separate appointed board (all accountable to the public). Because they are locally-governed, redevelopment agencies are in the best position to identify and prioritize local community needs and to work with private investors on local projects to meet those needs. In the City of Taft, redevelopment funds have been or could be used for:Senior Affordable HousingWorkforce housing and homeownership opportunitiesImprovements to public infrastructurePolice Station and other public facilitiesCrime reduction and improved code enforcementRevitalize the Downtown Business DistrictNeighborhood beautification such as upgrading facades and sidewalks
