The first of seven shows in the “Underground Sound” se-ries, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers will be joined by spe-cial guest Aslyn, and the show will take place at the Vilar Per-forming Arts Center in Beaver Creek starting at 7:30 p.m.

Fall cleanups were in session yesterday in the Vail Valley as volunteers descended on the Eagle River for the Eagle River Watershed Council’s 16th Annual Riv-er Cleanup.

And while volunteers there were cleaning up 51 miles of the Eagle River and Gore Creek, the Rocky Mountain Sport Riders were removing more than five truckloads of garbage from the Spring Creek trail at the group’s cleanup there.

GOP boosts campaign effortsBut local Republicans aren’t participating in statewide ‘Super Saturday’ weekend

Republican party volunteers across the state are ramping up their efforts this weekend.

The new push is called “Super Saturday,” although it started Friday and continues all day today. It’s es-sentially a doubling of the party’s efforts to reach out to voters statewide, said Colorado GOP spokesperson Chelsey Penoyer.

The effort is coordinated by the party’s “Victory Offices,” which manage the party’s campaign efforts across the state. For weeks, the offices have sought out extra volunteers to work Friday, Saturday and today.

Those volunteers will work to drive up the party’s voter turnout, which is typically lower in non-presiden-tial election years.

“That’s something the Republican party does really well is getting republicans to go out to the polls,” Pe-noyer said.

Callers will focus initially on Republican party loy-alists, but will then move on to independent voters, mixed-party households and voters who have not al-

ways turned out to mid-term elections. This year, the party is particularly focused on voters

using mail-in ballots, Penoyer said. Because the bal-lots can be mailed in weeks before Election Day, the party now considers Oct. 12, the earliest day voters can return the ballots, to be the beginning of the election, she said.

Mail-in ballots have been shown to increase voter turnout, Penoyer said, particularly in rural parts of the state. After seeing a sharp increase in their use in the last election, she said the party has made their use a priority.

Colorado’s newest Victory Office opened Friday night in Eagle, but this office will not be participating in the “Super Saturday” weekend.

Randy Milhoan, the chair of the Eagle County GOP, said that the event was discussed during the last tele-phone conference for the party’s Executive Committee, of which he is a member, but that he didn’t join the conference until after it was discussed.

The office is still seeking volunteers to man the phones on other days. The five-room building has enough room for six to eight volunteers, Milhoan said.

The party is also seeking a part-time office manager, who would be paid with funds from the state party to oversee the volunteers, man phones and keep a key to the office, where yard signs for several Republican candidates will be stored.

DOW to offer free big gamelicenses to wounded veteransColorado vets to receive deer, elk, pronghorn tags

This fall the Colorado Wildlife Commission will provide free big game hunting licenses to Colorado combat veterans severely wounded in action while de-ployed overseas since Sept. 11, 2001.

The DOW will provide a free deer, elk and prong-horn license to veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan who are participants in the military’s Wounded Warrior Pro-grams.

“It is wonderful that the DOW is giving such a gener-ous gift to wounded warriors, as many of them are pas-sionate about the outdoors and are avid hunters,” said Cheryl Jensen, who runs the Vail Veterans program, which has assisted several wounded veterans on hunt-ing trips over the last couple of years.

“Offering free big-game licenses is just a small token of the gratitude we all feel toward the men and women who have served our country so courageously,” said Wildlife Commission chairman Tim Glenn. “We want them to know their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Free licenses to hunt antlerless deer, elk or prong-horn will be made available in game management units where the total antlerless license allocation is at least 100 for deer and elk or 50 doe pronghorn licenses state-wide during rifle seasons. Licenses would be capped at 10 licenses per game management unit or 2 percent of the total issued in that unit, whichever is greater.

For antlered deer, elk and buck pronghorn, Wounded Warrior licenses will be issued for private land only and capped at five licenses per game management unit or 2 percent of the total, whichever is greater. Antlered tags will not be issued for Ranching for Wildlife prop-erties or in units which take more than four resident preference points to draw.

The program applies to servicemen and women who are residents of or are stationed in Colorado and mir-rors the DOW’s existing mobility-impaired hunting

license program in that applicants must have a mobil-ity impairment resulting from a severe combat-related injury, which makes it physically impossible for them to hunt without the assistance of an attendant.

For his contribution to this year’s Hike, Wine and Dine fundraiser, Ruben Chagoya will serve up a taste of his hometown – Verra Cruz, Mexico.

The executive chef at the Dusty Boot in Beaver Creek, Chagoya will be serving up a mango shrimp ceviche, a dish he saw his mother and grandmother cook as a child, over fried wontons.

On Sept. 26, Chagoya will join chefs from seven other local res-taurants on the slopes of Beaver Creek. Each restaurant will have a booth somewhere along the course of an easy four-mile hike along the mountain. At the end of the hike, or-ganizers will host a wine tasting.

The event is the second annual fundraiser for Jack’s Place, a rest home in Edwards for those under-going cancer treatment. As many as 25 patients can stay overnight in the home for no charge, though a dona-tion of $25 is asked for.

This year will be the first time Chagoya will serve at the event. He has now worked as the execu-tive chef at the Dusty Boot, either in Beaver Creek or in Eagle, for more than a decade.

Raised on the southern end of the

Gulf Coast, Chagoya said he didn’t originally intend to become a chef, but that it ultimately proved to be the path he was meant to take. He entered college to become an en-gineer like his father, but said that was short-lived.

“(Engineering) wasn’t really my vocation,” he said. “That was the kitchen. It was dealing with flavors, with herbs, with spices.”

Unlike many of his peers, Chago-ya never attended culinary school. He got his start in the restaurant business at the age of 15 as a dish-washer in New Jersey. By the end of six months, he had worked his way into the kitchen as a prep cook.

The chef at the Long Island Beach restaurant, a German man named Italo, was something of mentor to

A plea agreement obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows Hilton will plead guilty to drug posses-sion and obstructing an officer. She must complete a drug abuse program, pay a $2,000 fine and serve 200 hours of community service.

Obama rallies black supporters at gala

President Barack Obama is hoping that black voters don’t stand on the sidelines when Democrats need all the election help they can get this year.

With polls showing his party facing a wide “enthusi-asm gap” with the GOP, Obama sought to rally an im-portant constituency in a speech at the annual awards banquet of the Congressional Black Caucus on yester-day night.

It’s a group reeling from ethics charges against two leading members, Democratic Reps. Charles Rangel of New York and Maxine Waters of California. Republi-cans are preparing TV ads spotlighting the cases, even though House trials are now not expected until after the November election.

Child deaths test Fla.’s beach driving tradition

Four-year-old Aiden Patrick was playing on the beach just yards away from his father when he yelled “Daddy” and ran toward him, into the path of an on-coming truck driving legally on the sand.

The July death has tested this area’s tradition of beach driving. Along with a 4-year-old British girl who was struck and killed on Daytona Beach a few months earlier, residents are now torn between outlawing cars on the beach and persevering a deep-rooted ritual that helped form the Daytona 500 stock car race.

“It’s an extremely divisive issue that people get very emotional about,” said Volusia County Councilman Josh Wagner.

Like most local elected officials, Wagner wants to keep the custom that has long been part of the area’s identity.

Christians in Indonesia defy police, past attacksA group of Christian worshippers said they would

defy police and the threat of attack to hold Sunday prayers outside their now-boarded-up church near In-donesia’s capital.

Religious tensions that had been growing for months in the industrial city of Bekasi came to a head last week when unidentified assailants stabbed a member of the Batak Christian Church in the stomach and hit its preacher on the head with a wooden plank. Neither injury was life-threatening.

Police arrested 10 suspects including the local leader of the hard-line Islamic Defender’s Front, which has for months warned the Christians against holding prayers in the staunchly Muslim neighborhood.

against the North African branch of al-Qaida in neigh-boring Mali.

People described heavy fighting late Friday in the Mauritanian region of Nema near the border with Mali. An official said yesterday that Mauritanian forces were granted permission to fight militants inside northern Mali.

At least 12 militants died and five Mauritanians were killed in the operation.

Authorities believe al-Qaida’s North Africa branch could be behind the kidnapping of five French nation-als and two Africans in Niger, but the official said Fri-day night’s operation had nothing to do with that case.

Pakistan floods renew debate on dam project

This summer’s floods in Pakistan have reopened a quarter-century-old debate on whether to build a large hydroelectric dam on the River Indus, a dispute that has split the nation along regional lines. Supporters say the water reservoir could have prevented much of the floods’ devastation and boosted agricultural production along the river. Opponents say just the opposite.

The debate over the Kalabagh Dam shows how the worst natural disaster in Pakistan’s history, affecting some 20 million people, has unearthed deep fissures in its society. There is a chronic mistrust among Paki-

stan’s four provinces and the central government, and critics accuse wealthy landowners of naked self-inter-est in wanting to ensure the Indus keeps irrigating their crops.

Nigeria’s president kicks off election campaign

President Goodluck Jonathan, who was thrust into office after Nigeria’s elected leader died earlier this year, formally launched a presidential bid yesterday that could split the oil-rich nation’s ruling party along religious lines.

Jonathan danced his way to the lectern to deliver his speech in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja, dressed in a gray caftan and black bowler hat traditional to his home in the oil-producing Niger Delta region.

He recounted growing up without shoes and fore-going meals, a reality faced by many in Africa’s most populous nation. And he promised to fight corruption and bring more electricity to the country.

where a series of rocket attacks and bombings dampened turnout despite a heavy presence of security forces.

One bomb attack narrowly missed the Kandahar provincial governor’s convoy as he traveled between polling stations to observe yesterday’s parliamentary vote.

International troops and Afghan forces have been ramping security in this key southern region - the birthplace of the Taliban movement - in an attempt to keep insurgents from staging attacks and turn the tide of the nine-year war.

Those who ventured out to vote did so slowly at first, a few members of one family at a time. Later, groups of voters left their homes and headed to polling sta-tions. But when the polls closed, it was clear that turnout had been lower than during last year’s presidential election.

Cops nab ‘Darth Vader’ robber

Police arrested a resident they said wore a plastic Darth Vader mask before pulling a butcher knife and robbing a convenience store. Police in the Detroit suburb said the man fled Monday after demanding all the cash from the register.

Lt. William Wilson told The Daily Tri-bune of Royal Oak the suspect goofed by putting on the mask while in range of a store surveillance camera.

Nibali zeroing in on Spanish Vuelta title

Vincenzo Nibali tightened his grip on the Spanish Vuelta yester-day, finishing second behind rival Ezequiel Mosquera in the grueling 20th stage of the Spanish Classic to all but secure the overall victory.

Mosquera completed the moun-tainous 107-mile leg in 4 hours, 45 minutes, 28 seconds. The Spaniard needed to overcome a 50-second deficit and broke out alone with 2 miles to race in the race’s next-to-last leg, but Nibali clawed his way back to finish 1 second behind.

“Mosquera was very strong,” he said. “And with so many people watching on and it being so com-petitive, that the win went right to the finish line.”

Nibali broke into tears at the sum-mit finish. The Liquigas-Doimo cy-clist is in position to become the fifth Italian winner in 65 editions of the race, with Marco Giovan-netti the last in 1990. Nibali leads Mosquera—who picked up extra time through bonus points—by 41 seconds with an overall time of 85:16:05.

“I attacked to win the Vuelta, not just the stage,” Mosquera said. “But he knew how to manage the situ-ation, and I suppose I was a little nervous but him, too, since he had more to lose.”

Mosquera made his push at the beginning of the toughest part of the demanding climb up to the top of the ski resort.

While Nibali stayed with him early, he soon slipped 11 seconds behind on the steep climb to the Bola del Mundo finish and Mos-

quera managed to push 20 seconds ahead with the crowds cheering the two up the thin strip of road into the clouds.

But Nibali didn’t panic and re-gained his rhythm to close the gap to the Xacobeo Galicia rider, who crossed the finish a bicycle length ahead.

Joaquin Rodriguez of Spain was third—23 seconds back—to stay fourth in the overall standings be-hind Peter Velits of Slovakia, who trails Nibali by 3:02. Frank Schleck finished 35 seconds back in fourth to remain fifth overall.

Today’s 53-mile ride is from San Sebastian de los Reyes into Ma-drid, the traditional finish site of the Spanish race.

Riis says Swiss rider Fabian Can-cellara is quitting the Danish team.

Riis tells Danish broadcaster TV2 that the 29-year-old Olympic road race silver medalist is leaving a year before his contract expires. The reasons for his departure were not immediately known Saturday.

Cancellara is regarded as the world’s best time trialist. He has won the prologues in the Tour de France in 2004, 2007 and this year. He added the individual time trial this year.

qualifier for the upcoming FIS World Championships at Park City, Utah in February. Four competitors – the top-two men and top-two women – will au-tomatically qualify for Worlds with the remainder determined by AFP ranking and X Games results.

“We’re making some assumptions that [halfpipe skiing] is going to get the OK from the IOC,” said Tom Kelly, vice president of communications for USSA. “As an organization, we’re making a pretty big commitment to halfpipe. And we want to showcase Copper as a world-class event.”

Eventually, the Grand Prix will likely also serve as an Olympic qualifier for halfpipe skiing, as it has for snowboard-ing.

The inclusion of skiing in the event by USSA will provide much-needed consis-tency in terms of judging and pipe size. Halfpipe skiing thus far been has been a mishmash between the Dew Tour, which has been held on an 18-foot pipe in the past, and the X Games and the FIS World Cup, which are both held on 22 footers. Judging standards have also varied from

event to event. “Ski halfpipe has become a major in-

ternational event with a strong following of athletes worldwide,” said USSA fre-eride program director Jeremy Forster. “Fans can expect to see some amazing performances, which is one of the rea-sons the IOC is taking a look at the event for the 2014 Games.”

The Copper event will also feature one of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Associa-tion’s most popular series for developing athletes, the Paul Mitchell Progression Session, with a slopestyle event under the lights on Saturday night.

According to ESPN.com, the skiing field will include roughly 90 men and 40 women, with about a third of those spots to be filled by foreign athletes. Twenty men and 10 women will be prequalified by AFP rankings. Other skiers can regis-ter starting Oct. 12 at www.ussa.org.

The Visa U.S. Halfpipe Grand Prix is set to air on three different dates. NBC will feature same weekend coverage with both ski and snowboarding on Dec. 12 at noon followed by ski halfpipe on Versus Dec. 25 at 2 p.m.

Chagoya, who eventually worked his way up to an assistant chef position. Be-cause the restaurant was only open for the summer tourist season, though, he said he worked construction in the off-season to make ends meet.

Chagoya moved to Colorado in 1990, when he took a job as a chef at the Ritz-Carlton. He came to the Vail Valley after his marriage in 1997, because he hoped to raise a family here.

Thirteen years later, Chagoya is now the proud father of three daughters. His oldest, Aspen, is named for the area he has come to love, while his youngest, Basil, is named for the place he has loved for the last 24 years – the kitchen.

Until his daughters are grown, Chago-ya said he has no intentions to leave his work in Beaver Creek or his home in Gypsum. In time, though, he said he does hope to return to Mexico.

Once college tuition is paid for, he said, he wants to open his own restaurant in Verra Cruz and to bring the diversity of flavors he has experienced throughout his culinary career to his hometown. Be-ing close to the Gulf will allow him to work with fresh seafood again, which he described as his specialty.

Though he has had to transition from freshly caught fish to freshly killed wild game, Chagoya said he has always found a way to please his customers’ palates.

“Things come out well, you know, when you do things with a lot of love,” he said.

Other participating restaurants in the Hike, Wine and Dine include The Osprey, Grouse Mountain Grill, Bea-ver Creek Chophouse, Beano’s Cabin, D’Oro and Remini. To join, e-mail Bran-don Mays at [email protected] or call (970) 569-7645.
