Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) and Magnesium Hydroxide (MDH) Aluminatrihydrate(ATH)andmagnesiumhydroxide(MDH)arewidelyusedtomakelow-smokeand/orhalogen-freeflameretardantwireandcablecompoundsforarangeofinsulationandjacketingapplications.ATHandMDHservetoretardbothflameandsmokeviaanendothermicreactionthatreleaseswaterwhenheatedtodecomposition.Themetaloxideby-productfromdecomposedATHandMDH,Al2O3andMgOrespectively,alsohelpsformacharonthepolymer,thusinsulatingthepolymerfromheatandoxygen.

ThechartbelowcomparesthedecompositioncharacteristicsofATHandMDH.ATHdecomposesatabout220˚CwhileMDHdecomposesatabout330˚Cthushavingahigherthermalstabilityallowingforawiderwindowforcompoundingprocessing.

Huber’s Base ATH and MDH Products for Wire and Cable ApplicationsHuberoffersmanyproductsforwireandcableapplications,includingthefollowingbasematerials.Numerousothergradesareavailablewithineachproductcategory.

ATHissuitabletouseinPVC-andpolyolefin-basedwireandcablecompoundswherecompoundingprocessingtemperaturesaretypicallybelow220˚C.MDHispreferredforformulatingthecompounds thatneedtobeprocessedattemperaturesnearorabovetheATH decompositiontemperaturesuchaspolypropyleneandengineeringthermoplastics.UseofMDHalsoenablesprocessingofPVCorpoly-olefincompoundsathighertemperaturesnotpermissibleforATH,thusenhancingthecompoundingefficiencyorextrusionthroughput.

KeymaterialparametersconsideredwhenselectinganATHorMDHproductforflameretardantwireandcableapplicationsareparticlesize,particlesizedistribution,surfacearea,particleshapeormorphology,chemicalcleanlinessandcolor.Theseparameterswilldirectlyaffectcompoundingperformanceandcompoundproperties.Othercommonconsiderationsmayincludethetypeandlevelofsurfacetreatmentbasedonthepolymertypeandcompoundperformancerequirements.
