The Hudson River Valley is a great place to go to school,

live, and to work as a Mental Health Counselor!

FOCUS ON A MEMBER

Suse Volk, M.A., M.S., LMHC

I am the Director of Training of

the HVIG since it started a little

over a year ago. I’ve always

liked learning and for that

reason was drawn to volunteer

for that position.

I grew up in a region of

Germany called the Pfalz. Bad

Bergzabern, the small town

where I spent my very protected

childhood, is in the

southwestern part of Germany on the French border. I have

come full circle when five years ago I moved to New Paltz. I

just wanted to live in a small town in the mountains and I

luckily stumbled upon New Paltz. Little did I know that I

moved to a place where others from my home town, namely

the Huguenots, had moved to some 400 years ago.

Synchronicity at work!

My very first introduction to the United States occurred

when I was 16 and an AFS exchange student in Arlington,

Texas. I still remember the poster in my local school

advertising a year abroad and I knew I would be chosen to

do this. I had no clue though how profoundly it would

change the course of my life. After a solid year of culture

shock, I went back to Germany to finish High School and to

start College, always knowing somewhere inside of me that I

would return to the United States someday. After graduating

with a Bachelor degree from the University of Bonn in

1980, majoring in Psychology and Education, I then

returned to the United States to attend graduate school at the

University of Texas in Austin.

My education wasn’t the only reason for returning to the

United States, no, a man was another reason for this

decision. I graduated with a Masters degree in Child

Development and Family Relationships in 1982 and

accepted a job in Munich to work for Bavarian Television

on the production of a film about the development of

children in different cultures. This project led to other film

and movie productions and eventually I moved to Atlanta,

Georgia to accept a position as a Flight Attendant of all

things.

HVIG, May 12, 2006

As it is obvious by now, my life has never been a straight

path but rather a very winding road. While flying all over the

world for a while I also attended Georgia State University

and graduated in 1995 with a Masters degree in Community

Counseling. My own therapy and personal growth led me to

wanting to become a therapist myself.

My internship was spent at The Bridge in Atlanta, a treatment

center for adolescents with severe behavior problems. The

Bridge offered me a therapist position after I received my

degree and I worked there for two years gaining wonderful,

difficult, and very important experience. I received my

license in Georgia in 1998 and at that point moved into

private practice.

Besides my formal education, I have received additional

training in Hypnotherapy, Gestalt therapy, Psychomotor work

and life coaching. My therapeutic orientation draws on

concepts and methods from Jungian, transpersonal,

humanistic, gestalt and cognitive areas of Psychology. I work

with individuals, couples, and groups to address concerns

such as family of origin issues, depression, anxiety,

relationship difficulties and personal growth. I also conduct

regular workshops to help women feel more empowered in

their lives. My particular interest is in therapeutic work that

integrates spiritual principles, emotional expression, and the

wisdom of the body.

If you would like to contact Suse to receive additional

information or if you are a member of the HVIG and would

be interested in presenting at one of our meetings, contact

Suse, our Director of Training: [email protected]

QUOTES, CARTOONS &

HUMOR ARE GOOD

And I Quote.......

The goal of counseling is to help clients feel better and act

differently. All models of counseling attempt to reach this goal

by creating interventions that focus on one of four areas. Each

model intervenes on feelings, behaviors, thinking, and/or

biochemistry. Humor can effect changes in all four areas and

therefore, a counselor who learns effective uses of humor

increases the potency of the counseling. (Stephen Sultanoff,

PhD.)

payments.
