PAGE 2 MAY 2016

Dear Western Region members,

As Spring is swiftly moving to Summer I am sure you, like myself, are looking forward to

the much welcomed reprieve that comes at the end of the School Year. I love every minute

of teaching and the many varied tasks I get to do as an art educator but when summer

looms, one of the things I am most excited about is time that can be devoted almost exclu-

sively to creating artwork.

During the academic year, my focus rests primarily on the work of teaching, leaving little

room and space for making. I admire those colleagues who have a weekly art-making gath-

ering and work together. I haven’t yet found the way to fit that into my schedule. Yet, ra-

ther than feeling guilty about what I should be doing, or comparing myself to others process and products, I’ve

chosen to focus this spring on ‘filling my bucket’ with creative acts that bring joy. These include working in the

garden, hiking, biking, and reading books (unrelated to academia)!

Recently, I picked up Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2015 book titled, “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear.” Reading

this book has provided perspective and possibility. If you haven’t read it, I encourage you to do so. One of the

reasons I justify not creating is putting everything and everyone else first. I don’t make time for my work. Gilbert

suggests that creativity is a relationship cultivated with the mysterious; we need, she advises, to courageously

show up, and be present to DO the work. In this way, when inspiration, the mysterious, or if you’d like to call it,

the Divine, deigns to grace us with its presence, we are ready and prepared. This summer, I commit to showing

up daily for my creative process and cultivating that crucial relationship. What commitment will you make for

yourself? Imagine what growth and personal joy will come from putting ourselves at the top of our list!

Best wishes,

Darden

Mobile Making with Artist Matthew Burgy

The winter workshop with local artist Matthew Burgy went off

like a well-balanced mobile! The large group that attended had

loads of fun learning the math of how to make the perfect mo-

bile. Hearing how he was inspired by the artist Alexander

Calder started to stir our own creative juices in order to make

many amazing mobiles. Matthew has shared his ability to

make wonderful art form with students at local art centers

as well as fellow artists wanting to learn the trade. I know

from personal experience that this form of art making can

appeal to any age group. Many of those who attended

were bouncing ideas around in order to try and find a

place to put this project in their plans for next year.

Matthew had many of his works on display such as jewel-

ry and his own personal mobiles to help inspire us. He

was also very kind to share some of the beautiful beads

he makes for his jewelry. If you are interested in looking

at some of Matthews amazing artwork you can look at his

artworks on his Facebook page Matthew R. Burgy Art-

works.

Make sure you try to catch the next workshop that will

surely get your creativity flowing and help give you that

extra boost during the year that we so often need!!

The 2016 regional student art exhibition, also known as the “summer show”, is open to ALL

Western members of OAEA with students in grades K-12! That’s right: It’s not just a K-8 show

or a high school show; it’s BOTH! Though the limit is eight (8) items per member, we will happi-

ly settle for one or two. If you submitted work to the YAM/YPAE, you may already have work in

the summer show, because anything not selected for YAM or YPAE is automatically entered in

the regional exhibition. Submissions will be accepted April 25 through May 11. Work can be

dropped off WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ONLY dur-

ing the monthly regional board meeting at Panera on Brown Street. Other arrangements can be

made by contacting Rachel Hathaway at rachel.hathaway.beavercreek.k12.oh.us or via

phone at (937) 429-7588 x7635.

Once the work has been collected, the chairperson will organize it and send letters to all students and teachers with work in

the show. The show will be displayed at the ArtStreet Gallery on Kiefaber Street, adjacent to the University of Dayton. The

date for hanging the show is Monday, June 13 (Volunteers should meet at the gallery by 9 a.m.). Please contact Rachel Hath-

away with any questions you may have.) The show will be available for viewing from June 14 through June 30 during regu-

lar gallery hours (10-4pm), and the artists’ opening receptions are scheduled for Wednesday, June 15.
