Hull Truck isn’t just a theatre. It’s also a vital creative resource for the city, the region and the nation. Through our work with schools and with the community, we help to raise aspirations and give life-changing creative opportunities to thousands of young people, disabled groups and adults, every year.
This success story – nearly 40 years old – will continue over the next 3 years in the face of the most severe cuts to arts funding for a generation. This means that Hull Truck will have a shortfall of nearly £500,000 between now and 2014. Whilst the Arts Council and Hull City Council continue to support us, they have made cuts which means we have to look at alternative funding.
If everyone who reads this brochure gave as little as £5 we would make up half that shortfall. We know these are tough times for everyone, so in asking you to support Hull Truck’s future success we want to make it as easy and affordable for you as possible.
Please help us continue our inspirational work within the Theatre and throughout the wider community.

Theatre Brothel is a brand new theatre experience – just tell us what you fancy and we’ll satisfy your appetite or scratch your itch… you might even get a taste for something new.
For Theatre Brothel in Hull, Greyscale have teamed up with Hull Truck to give you a choice of up to six different performances all taking place in different parts of the theatre building.
Greyscale like to explore the fringes and gaps in-between the ways performance works. Structured, powerfully live, original, interactive and anarchic theatre for a modern audience bored of being bored. Greyscale present three of the six Theatre Brothel performances, including a play by Stewart Lee and a specially commissioned theatre noir.
Exclusive to Hull’s Theatre Brothel are specially made performances by Rash Dash (Another Someone) who continue their thriving creative collaboration with Hull Truck (catch their performances 14, 15 & 18 June), a new short play intriguingly entitled Spacewang by Hull writer Tom Wells (About a Goth) and a Hull debut by Made in China, who create uniquely adventurous new work.
Your ticket is your backstage pass to delve into hidden parts of the theatre you’ve never seen before. You will experience two different shows each evening…. Or you can experience them all by coming on more than one evening.
Theatre Brothel is ideal for audiences who enjoyed, or who couldn’t get a ticket for, Slung Low’s Mapping the City.

They say that some objects have a habit of finding a way to their natural owners. When Elsie Templeman bought a sovereign ring in Hull in 1941, she could never have believed the journey that ring had already taken or would take – and through whose lives, hearts – and stomachs – it would pass, before that owner was revealed.
From the Hull Blitz to the day The Beatles came to Hull, from the heady days of 1987 to a time two years in the city’s future, the play features four spellbinding stories of love, fun and heartache covering four generations of life in this wonderful city and beyond. Ring Around the Humber is as life-affirming and joyous as Hull itself.
Specially commissioned by Hull Truck for summer 2011, Ring Around the Humber is a chance for you to sample the works of four exciting writers from the region; for you to give something back to your theatre… and be brilliantly entertained in return!

Mari’s daughter is different. Never leaves the house, doesn’t like the men her mother brings home. She would rather stay in her room with only her record collection for comfort.
But she can sing! It’s the kind of voice that gives you goosebumps. And when you can sing, you can do anything...
The big time beckons... but is it for Little Voice or is it a meal ticket for Mari’s latest boyfriend, Ray?
Is this a chance for escape? Or will putting Little Voice in front of a crowd ruin everything…?
This brand new Hull Truck production of the Olivier award-winning play (Best New Comedy 1993) by the brilliant Jim Cartwright is as hilarious, touching and electrifying as when it was first written. The movie Little Voice (1998) starred Brenda Blethyn, Jane Horrocks and Ewan McGregor.
Joining the cast of The Rise and Fall Little Voice in the plum role of Mari’s best friend Sadie, is Lisa Riley - best known for Emmerdale, Fat Friends and Waterloo Road, but also on stage in the best-selling tour of Calendar Girls. Billy is played by Philip Hill-Pearson, known for his role as Bruce in Shameless and the upcoming film of the National Theatre hit Warhorse. Little Voice will be played by a rising star – watch this space!

Glee Club: A musical group or choir group, historically of male voices but also of female or mixed voices, which traditionally specialises in the singing of short songs – glees – by trios or quartets.
In 1962, in the heart of the South Yorkshire coalfields, the Edlington Colliery’s six-man Glee Club are preparing for their Gala performance. But Philip, the Musical Director, has got a problem.
Bant’s wife has run off with the tea delivery man, Walt is trying to get over losing his, Scobie can’t get a word in edgeways at home, Colin wants to be a rock star and Jack has romantic ideas above his station. With the Gala only weeks away, music seems to be the last thing on anyone’s mind… and that’s before a revelation that will change everything…
Combining raucous wit and spellbinding close-harmony singing, Richard Cameron’s celebrated hit is as insightful and poignant as it is hilarious. Prepare to have your heartstrings tugged!

“We’ve been in revolution since I was born. I never had to die before”
At 25 years old, the brilliant but reckless Bonnie Prince Charlie rebelled in a blaze of glory. By the time he was 26 his dreams lay in ruins and he was fleeing for his life.
Amidst the chaos of war and in the face of defeat, the Young Pretender is forced to confront the moment when idealism dies and realism sets in.
The flawed prince is brought to life vividly in this unflinching look at the nature of rebellion.
nabokov puts the audience at the heart of its work and is devoted to cultivating crucial new, young audiences.
Young Pretender is a co-commission by Hull Truck and nabokov from the provocative and brilliant young writer, E.V. Crowe (Kin, Royal Court), direct from the Edinburgh Festival. nabokov and Hull Truck are working together to uncover the writing talent of the future.

Written & Directed by John Godber Designed by Pip Leckenby
The new comedy from one of the nation’s favourite playwrights.
The Debt Collectors mixes money and love with the love of money, as two out of work actors fall into the world of debt recovery. You think you know the story, do you? Old man leaves out leather, elves turn it into shoes in the night?
You haven’t heard the half of it.
What about the elves? What are they doing making shoes? Why aren’t they making toys for Santa like normal elves?
And what happens when the shoemaker’s wife fancies owning her own personal magic elf…?
This Christmas, join Corky and Peeptoe, the weirdest elves nobody has ever met, and hear a side of the classic fairytale you have never heard before.
A cast of hundreds, played by two elves (and a variety of shoes), will take you on a journey you’re not going to forget in a hurry. The songs will be silly, the jokes will be… jokey – and it may even change the way you think about flip-flops.

The hilarious and touching comedy of Christmas misunderstandings by the writer of Calendar Girls – all about what happens when you’re not playing Mary.
The same actors play both children and their uncannily similar parents, as we join the infants class at Flint Street School preparing for their first nativity performance. The Virgin Mary has a fierce competitor in the spiteful angel Gabriel, Wise Man Frankincense is verbally challenged by a lisp, Herod rages like a footballer brutally brought down mid-match and the Innkeeper behaves like a psychopath. To crown it all, baby Jesus’ head has fallen off.
Fretting about their offspring’s impending public performance, the adults row, rage and obsess just like their children, to hilarious effect. Whilst the clothes may change, the foibles are all too similar…!
An uplifting, fast-paced comedy which reminds us that, even as adults, we’re never too far away from being children. Joyful, daft, and deeply Christmassy, this is a heartwarmingly funny play.
Based on Tim Firth’s own hit TV comedy, which starred Jane Horrocks, Stephen Tompkinson, Neil Morrissey and Josie Lawrence.
‘ [A] Christmas cracker from Tim Firth, a writer whose work anybody would travel miles to see. Follow that star.’ The Stage
