Human Resources FundamentalsHuman Resource (HR) Fundamentals provides a high level overview of the profession’s fundamental objectives and competencies. This course is designed for individuals who are new to the HR field, those who are interested in learning more about the profession, and managers looking to improve their understanding of Human Resources. Students will learn key concepts and processes associated with business management and strategy, workforce planning and employment, compensation and benefits, talent and performance management, and employee and labor relations. The course will also introduce laws that affect managing human resources and risk management. This class is the recommended starting point for all of the HR Management Certificate Program participants and is the foundation course for the program.

Who should take this course?This course is designed for all individuals who want to gain a basic understanding of Human Resources as a profession. This introductory course is beneficial for those with some HR background who want to formalize what they already know, as well as those who have no HR background, but would like to determine if HR could be in their professional future.

Course Objectives•Describe the fundamental role of Human Resources (organizationally and professionally) within

an organization.•Explain how business organizations operate and how they affect Human Resource objectives.•Describe Human Resource policies and practices that support Workforce Planning and

Employment goals.•Summarize Human Resource programs and processes that support Human Resource

Development goals.•Describe Human Resource practices that support Compensation and Benefit goals.•Describe Human Resource policies and practices that support Employee Labor Relations goals.•Summarize Human Resource activities that support Risk Management goals.

The above prerequisites are considered to be the basic skills and knowledge needed prior to taking this class. Instructors will assume your readiness for the class materials and will NOT use class time to discuss prerequisite materials.

•Describe federal legislation that relates to Workforce Planning.•Define Equal Employment.•List protected classes of employees.•Describe activities included in strategic workforce planning.•Describe three recruitment methods.•Differentiate between four different types of interviews.•List four considerations before making an employment offer.•Describe the four elements that every termination process should include.

Summarize Human Resource programs and processes that support Human Resource Development goals.

•Describe four different development opportunities for employees.•Explain the difference between management and leadership development programs.• Identify three types of employee training programs.•List five steps to an effective performance review process.•Describe four different types of performance appraisal methods.
