Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Na-tions General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone’s rights! Many of us are fearful about the way the world is heading. Disrespect for basic human rights continues to be wide-spread in all parts of the globe. Extremist move-ments subject people to horrific violence. Messages of intoler-ance and hatred prey on our fears. Humane values are under attack. We must reaffirm our common humanity. Wherever we are, we can make a real difference. In the street, in school, at work, in public transport; in the voting booth, on social media. The time for this is now. “We the peoples” can take a stand for rights. And together, we can take a stand for more humanity. It starts with each of us. Step forward and defend the rights of a refugee or migrant, a person with disabilities, an LGBT per-son, a woman, a child, indigenous peoples, a minority group, or anyone else at risk of discrimination or violence.

Building on the success of the 2015 experience, the second edition of the film festival Human Rights Through Cinematog-raphy will take place 15 November – 10 December 2016. The positive response the film festival received last year, encouraged us to increase the number of movies and of locations: twenty three movies and documentaries will be screened in Gujrat, Is-lamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta. The themes featured include migration, democracy, forced marriages, do-mestic violence, freedom of press, honor killings, decent work and women’s empowerment among others. The number of partners has also increased: in addition to the European Union, the Swiss Confederation and the International Film Festival of Human Rights (FIFDH), this year the Embassy of Argentina and the High Commissions of Australia and Canada have joined the organizing committee of the festival. Debates with specialists will follow the screenings while several movie directors will be available for Q&A sessions either in presence or via video link. The Human Rights Declaration in Urdu will be available at the venues of the festival to raise awareness and stimulate debates on human rights among Pakistani audiences.

The European Union was born out of WWII, which saw large-scale severe human rights violations among Europe-ans. For that reason the European Union is strongly com-mitted to fostering human rights protection in Europe and around the world. While promoting human rights worldwide, the European Union and its Member States acknowledge that problems do still exist in Europe and that they must be tackled. The films selected to celebrate the 2016 Interna-tional Human Rights Day show that all around the world, people are still greatly suffering from violations of their basic rights. No country is exempt from doing its utmost to ensure that human rights are cultivated, protected and enforced at all levels and in all parts of the world. The EU supports Paki-stan’s efforts for protection of the human rights with special focus on gender equality, freedom of religion and belief, rule of law, access to justice and freedom of expression.

Outro País looks at the Portuguese revolution of 1974 that brought down a totalitarian regime that ran for nearly 50 years not through the eyes of the locals who lived through it - as most documenta-ries tend to do - but through the lenses of foreign photographers and filmmakers who came to cov-er it for international media.

In this feature-length documen-tary, Cree filmmaker Neil Dia-mond takes an entertaining and insightful look at the portrayal of North American Indigenous peo-ple throughout a century of cine-ma. Featuring hundreds of clips from old classics as well as recent releases, the film traces the evo-lution of the “Hollywood Indian.” Diamond guides the audience on a journey across America to some of cinema’s most iconic land-scapes and conducts candid in-terviews with celebrities like Clint Eastwood, Robbie Robertson and Jim Jarmusch. The film is a loving look at cinema through the eyes

of the people who appeared in its very first flickering images and have survived to tell their stories in their own way.

Casablanca Calling is the sto-ry of a quiet social revolution in Morocco. In a country where 60% of women have never been to school, a new generation of women have started work as offi-cial Muslim leaders or Morchidat. The Morchidat work in some of the poorest communities in Mo-rocco to separate the true teach-ings of Islam from prejudice and misunderstanding; support girls’ education; campaign against early marriage; and encourage young people to build better Mo-rocco, rather than dreaming of life in the West. Casablanca Call-ing is an intimate portrait of three Morchidat, and the story of a so-

ciety in transition and a mission to educate a nation.

As a fire destroys the worn down ferry, that connects the island to Italy, the mayor Giusi Nicolini and the local fishermen struggle for a new ship. The tiny community at the edge of Europe is engaged in a desperate struggle for solidari-ty with those who many consider the cause of the ongoing crisis: the African boat people.

A 63 years of the Universal Dec-laration of Human Rights nine Argentine directors decided to undertake a complex task: to re-flect the status of these rights in their country. The nine creative short documentaries that make up the film are a reflection of our country and its people, our idio-syncrasies, problems and aspira-tions. And also a way to publicize the scope and importance of this Declaration, which means bet-ting on compliance, since there for everyone.

After decades of war and an op-pressive Taliban regime, four Afghan photojournalists face the realities of building a free press in a country left to stand on its own – reframing Af-ghanistan for the world and for them. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, taking a photo was a crime. After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Now, as foreign troops and media withdraw, Afghanistan is left to stand on its own, and so are its journalists. Set in a modern Afghan-istan bursting with color and char-acter, FRAME BY FRAME follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and danger-ous media landscape – reframing

Afghanistan for the world, and for them. Through cinema vérité, inti-mate interviews, powerful photo-journalism, and never-before-seen archival footage shot in secret dur-ing the Taliban regime, the film con-nects audiences with four humans in the pursuit of the truth.

Outro País looks at the Portu-guese revolution of 1974 that brought down a totalitarian re-gime that ran for nearly 50 years not through the eyes of the locals who lived through it - as most documentaries tend to do - but through the lenses of foreign photographers and filmmakers who came to cover it for interna-tional media.

A gang of Afghan kids from the Kuchi tribe dig out old Soviet mines and

sell the explosives to children work-ing in a lapis lazuli mine. When not dreaming of the time when Ameri-can troops finally withdraw from their land, another gang of children keeps tight control on the caravans smug-gling the blue gemstones through the arid mountains of Pamir. In this seamless blend of fictional and doc-umentary form, we experience a stunning cinematic journey into the beauty of war-tormented Afghan-istan. Shot over seven years on evocative 16mm footage, first-time director Pieter-Jan De Pue paints a whimsical yet haunting look at the condition of Afghanistan left for the next generation. As American sol-diers prepare to leave, we follow De

Pue deep into this hidden land where young boys form wild gangs to con-trol trade routes, sell explosives from mines left over from war, and climb rusting tanks as playgrounds—mak-ing the new rules of war based on the harsh landscape left to them.

Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change. Directed by Avi Lewis, and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fic-tion bestseller This Changes Everything, the film presents seven powerful portraits of com-munities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Bei-jing and beyond. Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon

in the air with the economic sys-tem that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to trans-form our failed economic system into something radically better.

This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the peo-ple who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been de-creasing for decades, while the hu-man and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a ground breaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consid-er, who really pays the price for our clothing? Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading in-fluencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented pro-ject that invites us on an eye open-
