Humans Changing their Relationship with the EnvironmentBy: Mallory Rasmussen and Emily Shull
Global Warming
•Global warming: o increase in temperature of Earth's lower
atmosphere, believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect
•1995 - The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports human influence is the cause of increased global warming.
Human Influences on Global Warming
• Increase in greenhouse gases• Increase in aerosols• Change in surface conditions
o (e.g. reflective light, wind, evaporation)• Change in clouds
o (e.g. contrails, pollutants, etc.)• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3pujlkSTq
o
Future Human Impacts on Global Warming
• Population
• Technologyo Energy Productiono Energy use efficiencyo Land use
• Energy Structureo coal, oil/gas, Renewables/Nuclear
• Land useo Forests
Al Gore
Background: o vice president of Bill Clinton in 1993-2001o environmental activisto Alliance for Climate Protection
Environmentalism:o known as one of the Atari Democrats
(politicians who see issues in clean air & water
Alliance for Climate Protection
• founder: Al Gore• established 2006• focuses on drawing individuals together to
help save our Earth• 100% of all donations and funding are given to
the Alliance
Facts on Pollution(don't write down)
• 40% of America’s rivers and 46% of America’s lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life.
• Vehicle exhaust contributes roughly 60% of all carbon monoxide emissions nationwide, and up to 95% in cities.
• Over 80% of items in landfills can be recycled, but they’re not.
• In the U.S. 41% of all insecticides are used on corn. Of these, 80% are used to treat a pest that could be controlled simply by rotating a different crop for just one year.
Deforestation• caused by foresting, wild fires, and
subsequent overgrazingloss of habitat for millions of species
• the moist forest soils dry out because over exposure to sun light
• extreme temperature swings
How to Stop (Slow Down) Deforestation
• buy recycled wood
• plant your own trees
• buy an acre of rain forest to protect from deforestation
• recycle paper
• reuse grocery bags
• pressure governments to stop logging
Desertification
• Definition: process by which fertile land becomes deserto usually a result of drought, deforestation,
or poor agricultureo problem has detrimental effect on
countries in Africa.
Why should we care? And What can we do?
Why should we care?• Increasing Temperatures - human health issues
o warmer temps - spread of mosquitos - diseases like malaria and encephalitis
• Changing weather patterns - affect agriculture o more droughts or longer growing seasons
What can we do? • Recycling- saves energy to manufacture goods• Go solar – a solar system to provide hot water
can reduce your family’s carbon emissions by a lot
