HUMANS OF MORELANDCommunity Calendar 2018
Humans of Moreland began on Moreland’s Facebook page as a borrowed idea from the famous blog ‘Humans of New York’.
While the Humans series was very much a social media phenomenon to begin with, many similar projects around the world have been turned into exhibitions and books.
Humans of Moreland celebrates local people, their images and their inspiring stories.
For more Humans of Moreland stories, visit our Facebook page: fmorelandcitycouncil
ABOUT HUMANS OF MORELAND
Rodney“We decided to open our cafe – Mister
& Missus M. – in Brunswick West because
we loved the feel of the area and felt
we could grow with the expanding
population. Residents have welcomed
us with open arms and are now regular
customers.
It’s important for us to support local
business too. We get our newspapers
from the local milk bar and our son has
his hair cut at Melville Hair Salon.”

Ron“I started as Assistant Camera Operator
at Merlynston Hall. It was my start in the
industry – I was about 15 and lived just
down the road.
On Saturdays (in the early 60s) we’d run
a matinee and a night session.
We’d show current movies that would first
be screened in West Coburg, then they’d
come up to Merlynston Hall. There’d be
a queue – all the way down the lane – of
people waiting to get in.”
(Ron’s love of cinema remains, and he is
still active in the cinema industry. He’s
pictured with his Australian Cinema
Pioneer Card – allowing him entry into
film screenings across Australia.)

Shabba“I have been drumming for about 10 years
and dancing for 22 years. When I came
to Australia I decided to learn more about
drumming and I now enjoy facilitating
drum and dance workshops for children.
My band, ‘African Star Dance & Drumming
Company’, has performed all over
Moreland. People can expect a fun, high-
energy show as we share West African
culture through drum and dance. I always
look forward to sharing my culture and
checking out the other performances.”

Kath“I’ve lived in Moreland for over 20 years.
I came to Australia from England in the
sixties to teach, due to the shortage
of teachers in Australia, and I was an
educator for 37 years. Up until recently
I was still teaching refugees.
I’ve been coming to the Bob Hawke
Centre for Council’s Planned Activity
Group since my husband passed away.
We’re very involved in many projects,
including inter-generational projects
like the Seniors vs Seniors quiz with
Brunswick Secondary College.”

Chloe and Sunday“We’ve had a beautiful autumn’s day in
Coburg. We had lunch at Vasilli’s Garden
& Cafe and then my daughter Sunday had
a swim at Coburg Leisure Centre.
I’ve been living in Coburg for a little
while now and there’s still so much to
do and see. We walk everywhere and I
love stumbling across new op shops and
coffee places.
I feel like Coburg is the one place in
Melbourne that has kept its charm. There
is so much character in this suburb. We’re
very lucky.”

Julio“I love my football but I’m also passionate
about social justice and community
development.
I volunteer at the Coburg Football Club.
The northern suburbs have a long history
of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people. So it’s important for the club to be
part of that community. Football is a great
way of marrying my two passions.
We have Aboriginal players and a Maori
player. Two of our guys are fasting at the
moment too. There’s such a different mix
of cultures but it’s an equal playing field.
You can celebrate your culture and it’s
respected.”

Irene“I’ve been coming to Moreland’s Planned
Activity Group since my husband passed
away. I love it. It’s about good company,
and I’ve made friends.
I trained show dogs for over 54 years after
coming to Australia. I was actually training
a show dog when we got our sailing
notice to come to Australia. I got here
in 1961 and started dealing with dogs in
1963, and have been doing it ever since.
There’s more to dog showing than people
think. You make a lot of friends. It’s the
socialising. I’m training dogs less today,
but I still provide advice and regularly
attend dog shows.
I’ve got two dogs, do you want their
show names or their pet names? There’s
Rokeena Hershey’s Kisses – I call him
Hershey, and Rokena Romatique – I call
her Peggy.”

Vanessa“I have been involved in organising the
Merlynston Market for a little while now –
selling kids’ accessories at my own stall
too. It’s a great community market for
local, creative mums.
We have a focus on homemade,
handmade and homegrown. Usually
based in Bain Reserve, we’re all excited
to have an undercover space for winter
– with the old Merlynston Hall being
refreshed.
We run 5 markets a year, falling on the
last Sunday of the month. Our local café,
Cubby House Cafe, takes coffee orders
for people while they walk around. It’s
got a really welcoming feeling. Everyone
should pop down to the Market.”

Mohsin“This is my first welcome dinner in
Fawkner. Whatever suburb I move to I keep
an eye out for the community events to
try and get more involved. I think it’s very
important to be active in the community.
I chose to come to Australia and do
my Masters in Computer Science. We
have the internet because a group of
computers work together rather than
as individual computers. The same
goes for the community. Once we come
together we can see the wonders of the
community.”

Denise“Originally from Perth, I’m a Nyoongar
Yorga woman.
My people are the Whadjuk and Binjareb
people of the south-southwest of WA.
I came here when I was 15 and didn’t
know many Aboriginal people.
By the time I was 20 I was desperate to
find an Aboriginal workplace. Now I’m the
Administration Assistant at the Aboriginal
Community Elders Service (ACES). We’re
a nursing home for Aboriginal Elders and
we’re based out of Brunswick East.
The aunties and uncles here are real
special to me. Some have memory issues,
but when you talk to them about their
history, that’s when they remember.”

Pinar“My partner and I saw this old milk bar
was vacant so we decided to refurbish
it as a restaurant (now Cirelli & Co).
We serve authentic, traditional Southern
Italian food. All our chefs were trained in
Italy. One of our most popular dishes is
panzerotti – a savoury turnover similar
to a calzone.
Locals say the food, service and
atmosphere are amazing so we must
be doing something right!”
