Ebola Virus Information from QCC Health Consultant Nurse ClinicianThe Massachusetts Department of Public Health is advising Colleges to have a plan in place to monitor returning travelers from Ebola virus affected areas of Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Lagos in Nigeria). QCC is concerned about your health and safety and for the health and safety of the entire community. If you have traveled to any of the affected areas within the past 21 days, please contact Susan Johnson RN,C MSN, at 508.854.7556 or 508.525.3360 or email [email protected].

At this time, no students, faculty or staff have been identified as having recent travel to these countries but the college is being directed by The Department of Public Health to monitor community members with recent travel to these areas. Our goal is to reach out to anyone who has recently traveled to these areas so we can assess risk, provide education and a plan for you if you do become ill. Please keep in mind that there are many illnesses with fever that occur in travelers and that, regardless of the current situation in West Africa, Ebola virus infection is quite unlikely.

The recent Ebola outbreak is a worldwide concern, although the risk of contracting the virus in the United States is extremely low. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ebola is not spread through the air, like flu or other respiratory viruses, therefore it is unlikely that someone would become infected while traveling on a plane. The Ebola virus spreads through direct contact with the blood and/or body fluids of an infected person or animal. The incubation period is usually 8-10 days but can be as much as 2-21 days, and the virus is not transmissible during that time, or before the onset of fever.

QCC will continue to monitor the situation closely. Your cooperation with this important public health initiative is critical. Please visit the QCC Health and Wellness webpage for additional information.
